Download or read book Rebel Kingpin written by Livy North and published by Livy North AS. This book was released on 2021-03-28 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I set the fire, and still, I didn’t expect the burn. He’s my childhood rival: Arrogant and cruel. She’s my downfall: Beautiful but lethal. Emory told me we’d set the world on fire and watch it burn, because together we were untouchable—and what a great illusion that was. River has yet to learn that in a town of lies and deceit—the “truth” is very unreliable. Note: This is the second and final book in the duet about River and Emory and should be read following Riot Hearts! For a moment, I forgot that we are only humans after all. And above all, humans are mortal. But we’re not dead yet. So many questions are left unanswered. But if I have to, I’ll watch this city burn to the ground to get them. Hell, I’ll even start the fire myself. But fire is uncontrollable, and I can’t keep the people I love safe—not even her. I never could. Emory has always been the gasoline to my flames. Now watch us explode.
Download or read book Kunim written by Delia J. Nzekwu and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-09-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set within the cultural and geographical framework of Nigeria, Kunim: Raise Me Up is a collection of not-so-short stories that examine universal themes, such as discrimination and familial discord, as well as culturally specific biases, beliefs, and traditions, as it takes its readers on three very distinct but equally enlightening journeys. In “Fate,” two young, motherless sisters are forced to navigate the often-tumultuous waters of intra-cultural stereotyping and discrimination while their father is away on business. “Shadows” tells the story of a young Nigerian businessman, currently living in the United States, who returns to his home village and falls for a beautiful young woman whose mysterious nature has him rethinking everything he’d thought he understood about himself, the world, and the nature of the supernatural. And finally, in “Eyes that Speak,” a young girl whose parents perpetually keep themselves too busy to even notice her, let alone the unravelling of their own marriage, is feeling disconnected, alone, and fed up with the world until an unexpected kindness from a supposed adversary changes absolutely everything (though perhaps not for the better). Whether the Nigerian culture is your own, familiar to your own, or nothing like your own, the heart of this collection is the universality of the themes, shining a light into the depth of mankind’s complicated nature and how we cope with living as disparate collections of individuals among the larger multitudes, juggling cultural traditions, expectations, and our own instinctive need to belong.

Download or read book Rebel Politics written by David Brenner and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebel Politics analyzes the changing dynamics of the civil war in Myanmar, one of the most entrenched armed conflicts in the world. Since 2011, a national peace process has gone hand-in-hand with escalating ethnic conflict. The Karen National Union (KNU), previously known for its uncompromising stance against the central government of Myanmar, became a leader in the peace process after it signed a ceasefire in 2012. Meanwhile, the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) returned to the trenches in 2011 after its own seventeen-year-long ceasefire broke down. To understand these puzzling changes, Brenner conducted ethnographic fieldwork among the KNU and KIO, analyzing the relations between rebel leaders, their rank-and-file, and local communities in the context of wider political and geopolitical transformations. Drawing on Political Sociology, Rebel Politics explains how revolutionary elites capture and lose legitimacy within their own movements and how these internal contestations drive the strategies of rebellion in unforeseen ways. Brenner presents a novel perspective that contributes to our understanding of contemporary politics in Southeast Asia, and to the study of conflict, peace and security, by highlighting the hidden social dynamics and everyday practices of political violence, ethnic conflict, rebel governance and borderland politics.

Download or read book Superpower Interrupted written by Michael Schuman and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This global history as the Chinese would write it gives brilliant and unconventional insights for understanding China's role in the world, especially the drive to "Make China Great Again." We in the West routinely ask: "What does China want?" The answer is quite simple: the superpower status it always had, but briefly lost. In this colorful, informative story filled with fascinating characters, epic battles, influential thinkers, and decisive moments, we come to understand how the Chinese view their own history and how its narrative is distinctly different from that of Western civilization. More important, we come to see how this unique Chinese history of the world shapes China's economic policy, attitude toward the United States and the rest of the world, relations with its neighbors, positions on democracy and human rights, and notions of good government. As the Chinese see it, for as far back as anyone can remember, China had the richest economy, the strongest military, and the most advanced philosophy, culture, and technology. The collision with the West knocked China's historical narrative off course for the first time, as its 5,000-year reign as an unrivaled superpower came to an ignominious end. Ever since, the Chinese have licked their wounds and fixated on returning their country to its former greatness, restoring the Chinese version of its place in the world as they had always known it. For the Chinese, the question was never if they could reclaim their former dominant position in the world, but when.

Book excerpt: This lie of ours is stained with truth. To them, I’ve always been the charming, least conniving Sinclair. I've never been more than a dancing doll with strings. But that all changes when my childhood friend, Eleonora O’Malley, asks me to be a part of her grand scheme. She needs a fiancé—a fake one. And she wants it to be me. For reasons of my own, I take on the role of her doting future-husband. At first, it’s easy—like putting on a mask for the public. But the mask gets harder and harder to take off, and stolen touches and kisses when no one is watching are blurring the lines. After tens of fake pictures, fake dates, a two-carat ring and an elaborate love story, the scheme is big enough to blow up in everybody’s faces But guess what? It’s blowing up in mine too. And soon, our charade is about to get stained with blood. Note: This book is the first in a duet and ends on a cliffhanger. While it is recommended, you do not have to have read prior books in the series to enjoy this one. Book includes mature subjects suitable for 17+.

Download or read book Rules for Rebels written by Max Abrahms and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever wonder why militant groups behave as they do? For instance, why did Al Qaeda attack the World Trade Center whereas the African National Congress tried to avoid civilian bloodshed? Why does Islamic State brag over social media about its gory attacks, while Hezbollah denies responsibility or even apologizes for its carnage? This book shows that militant group behaviour depends on the tactical intelligence of the leaders. The author has extensively studied the political plights of hundreds of militant groups throughout world history and reveals that successful militant leaders have followed three rules. These rules are based on original insights from the fields of political science, psychology, criminology, economics, management, marketing, communication, and sociology. It turns out thereâs a science to victory in militant history. But even rebels must follow rules.
