Book excerpt: Hearing, which facilitates the localization of sound and perception of acoustic communication, is directly measurable in living reptiles, but must be indirectly inferred in extinct taxa from morphological proxies. Current proxies utilize only measurements of the inner ear and do not use phylogenetic statistical approaches. Here, we use phylogenetic least squares regressions incorporating morphometrics of the middle and inner ears of extant reptiles (e.g. endosseous cochlear duct length, oval window area) to predict hearing acuity (hearing range, best frequency, minimum, and maximum hearing frequency). We use measures of hearing acuity obtained from audiograms and X-ray Computed Tomography data from a sample of 56 reptiles to develop a reptile model, and a subset of this dataset to develop Aves-specific (n=25) and Lepidosauria-specific (n=27) models. The best-fitting models, assessed through the Akaike Information Criterion (AICc) with small sample correction, were used in estimating the hearing of a sample of extinct reptiles. We find clade-specific relationships among ear measures and hearing, with models including middle ear values performing best. We recover significantly lower hearing estimates than previously estimated. These proxies will allow for more accurate estimates of hearing and a better understanding of hearing shifts in deep time

Book excerpt: This paper presents the first comprehensive taxonomic revision of the olingos, Bassaricyon, based on most available museum specimens, with data derived from anatomy, mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, fieldwork, and geographic range modeling. Olingos are forest-living, arboreal, nocturnal, frugivorous, and solitary, and have one young at a time. Four olingo species can be recognized, including a Central American species (B. gabbii) and lowland species with eastern, cis-Andean (B. alleni) and western, trans-Andean (B. medius) distributions. Surprisingly, the sister lineage to all previously described species of Bassaricyon is an Andean cloud forest species, which we call the Olinguito, that has never been previously described. Bassaricyon neblina sp. n., en-demic to Colombia and Ecuador, is the smallest living member of the family Procyonidae and the first new species of Carnivora named in the American continents in 35 years. We describe four subspecies of Olinguito across the Northern Andes.
