Book excerpt: Excerpt from Considerations on the Present German War As the Author of these Considerations has ventured to differ from the commonly received opinion, it may be of use to confirm his sentiments with the highest and most unexceptionable authority; that of his Prussian Majesty, who, in a writing, said to have been drawn up by himself, speaks in the following manner: "As no German prince has a right to meddle with the internal policy of Great Britain, nor with the constitution of its government; I have some reasons to hope, that the English nation will not meddle with the domestic affairs of the Umpire. And I entertain those hopes the more; because England has no reason to meddle with this quarrel from any consideration of its commerce, or otherwise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German War, Its Morals and Ends This war is an atrocity made in Germany. It lacks even the ele ments of a fair game with its seditious spies, incendiary bombs, and submarine torpedoes by which Germany has pushed her ubiquitous nose into the affairs and security of other nations until she has made of herself an international offense. Do the Germans think by these means to cower and conquer the nations Of course they cannot do it. They are only laying up for themselves a store of wrath and con tempt that justly or unjustly will be visited upon their childrens' children, and from which they may only be redeemed by a repudiation of the creed and the craft of those who prepare war and contrive offen sive engines of death and devastation. There will be a new mind in Germany by the time the cripples she has made in this war have dis appeared from her sight. For the gentle German there will then be no more of glory in the Sieges Alee. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cause and Meaning of This War Notwithstanding Germany's official protestations that her great army and navy were designed only for her defense, many years ago and shortly after her war with France, the professors in her universities and the teachers in her schools, in books and in lectures to their classes, carried on a course of instruction which amounted to this: That throughout all the lower animal kingdom the weaker gave way and were exterminated to make room for the stronger and better; that this was equally true of mankind; that the history of man showed the extinction of numberless tribes and races and peo ples, and that this struggle for supremacy must go on; that the German mind and the German character were the highest in the world, and that it was the right and duty of Germany to impress these upon the world by subjugating, and if necessary exterminating, the inferior peoples. The pulpits voiced the same doctrine, thus: The German people is always right, because it is the German people Germany is the future of humanity; The downfall of Germanism would be the downfall of humanity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Verdict on the War: A Reply to the Manifesto of the German Professors Need I say more to prove to you how deep is the sym pathy, affection and gratitude which I and all my country men cherish towards the people of the German Empire? Need I say how our hearts bleed for them in this time of dreadful calamity, or how much we hope and pray that peace may soon return to the troubled bosom of the Father land? Why, the very texture of our nation would make us true to Germany in all her moral rights, because we have at this moment eight million people of German birth or German parentage in our population, and these citizens are among the very best in this country. Therefore, in a peculiar sense, we hold Germany in our heart of hearts, for she is bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh. But in the same way we cherish the people of all other races, ex cept, alas, those from Asia, and one day, in God's own time, we shall grow big enough in a spiritual sense to te ceive the children of Asia with equal hospitality. But we are a cosmopolite nation, and besides having those eight million Germans we have absorbed thirteen millions from Great Britain, from France, from Russia, from Austria, from the Balkans, and' 100, 000 from Belgium. All told we have of foreign birth and foreign parentage in our population. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Grenvillites and the British Press

Download or read book The Grenvillites and the British Press written by Rory T. Cornish and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The administration of George Grenville, 1763-1765, continues to divide historians. The passage of his American Stamp Act was widely debated by his contemporaries, damned by nineteenth-century Whig historians, and criticized by many historians well into the twentieth-century. The Stamp Act proved to be a political blunder which helped precipitate the outbreak of the American Revolution, and it is this, together with Grenville’s own forbidding personality, which has coloured how he has been largely remembered. Indeed, as one of his more recent biographers has noted, Grenville’s political career has been mainly judged on the comments made by his contemporary political enemies. Grenville, however, came to the premiership after spending twenty years in office and was perceived by many as an efficient and energetic minister; a capable and conscientious man who got things done. This present study adds to the recent reappraisal of Grenville’s career by investigating how he and his followers interacted with, and attempted to influence, the activities of the increasing political press during the first decade of the reign of George III. The Grenvillite pamphleteers were both well-organized and effective in their defence of their political patron, and the press activities of Thomas Whately, William Knox, Augustus Hervey, and Charles Lloyd are fully investigated here within the larger context of the political debates from 1763 to 1770. The impact East Indian issues, Irish affairs, John Wilkes, and American colonial problems had on shaping British public opinion are also examined. The book concludes, with regard to the American colonies at least, that the Grenvillite vision of empire was essentially traditional and mainstream. Stubborn, peevish, and argumentative he may have been, but Grenville was hardly the scourge of the American colonies as previously portrayed; nor was he the lone author of all the trouble between Britain and her American colonies as some American historians have suggested. George Grenville will remain a controversial figure in eighteenth-century British political history, but this study offers an examination of his political activities from a different perspective, and thus helps broaden our estimation of a minister who has been considered for too long as one of the worst prime ministers during the long reign of George III.

Book The War Spirit of Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book The War Spirit of Germany Classic Reprint written by George Mckinnon Wrong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War Spirit of Germany This backwardness in political thought and action constitutes one of the tragedies of the history of Germany. 'in political development Germany is where England stood in the days of Elizabeth. Un der Elizabeth, Parliament played but a small part in the life of the nation. True, it met, though sometimes only at intervals of several years, and it had control of the purse and of the making of new laws. But it voted revenues that the sovereign retained through life without further appeal to Parliament, and, since the sovereign usually thought there were already laws enough and desired little change, no new ones were passed for many years at a time. For the rest, the sovereign and the circle surrounding her controlled and spent the revenue; she named whom she would to office, kept up the army and navy, and resisted any attempt by the representatives of the nation to interfere in these things. W'ith slight differences the German Emperor does the same thing to-day. The German people have no more control over the government of Germany than the English people had over that of England in the long distant days before the struggle with Charles I to secure what Elizabeth had always refused to yield. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth About Germany: Facts About the War RY to realize, every one of you, what we are going through! Only a few weeks ago all of us were peacefully following our several vocations. The peasant was gathering in this summer's plentiful crop, the factory hand was working with accustomed vigor. Not one human being among us dreamed of war. We are a nation that wishes to lead a quiet and industrious life. This need hardly be stated to you Americans. You, of all others, know the temper of the German who lives within your gates. Our love of peage is so strong that it is not regarded by us in the light of a virtue, we Simply know it to be an inborn and integral portion of ourselves. Since the foundation of the German Empire in the year 1871, we, living in the centre of Europe, have given an example of tranquillity and peace, never once seeking to profit by any momentary difficulties of our neighbors. Our commercial extension, our financial rise in the world, is far removed from any love of adventure, it is the fruit of painstaking and plodding labor. We are not credited with this temper, because we are insufficiently known. Our situation and our way of thinking are not easily grasped. Book War State and Society in Mid Eighteenth Century Britain and Ireland

Download or read book War State and Society in Mid Eighteenth Century Britain and Ireland written by Stephen Conway and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-01-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the impact of the wars of 1739-63 on Britain and Ireland. The period was dominated by armed struggle between Britain and the Bourbon powers, particularly France. These wars, especially the Seven Years War of 1756-63, saw a considerable mobilization of manpower, materiel and money. They had important affects on the British and Irish economies, on social divisions and the development of what we might term social policy, on popular and parliamentary politics, on religion, on national sentiment, and on the nature and scale of Britain's overseas possessions and attitudes to empire. To fight these wars, partnerships of various kinds were necessary. Partnership with European allies was recognized, at least by parts of the political nation, to be essential to the pursuit of victory. Partnership with the North American colonies was also seen as imperative to military success. Within Britain and Ireland, partnerships were no less important. The peoples of the different nations of the two islands were forced into partnership, or entered into it willingly, in order to fight the conflicts of the period and to resist Bourbon invasion threats. At the level of 'high' politics, the Seven Years War saw the forming of an informal partnership between Whigs and Tories in support of the Pitt-Newcastle government's prosecution of the war. The various Protestant denominations - established churches and Dissenters - were brought into a form of partnership based on Protestant solidarity in the face of the Catholic threat from France and Spain. And, perhaps above all, partnerships were forged between the British state and local and private interest in order to secure the necessary mobilization of men, resources, and money.
