Book Reasons for Returning to the Church of England Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reasons for Returning to the Church of England Classic Reprint written by John Moore Capes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reasons for Returning to the Church of England In laying these reasons before the public, I hope that I am not transgressing the rules of modesty, or thrusting my own private and per sonal affairs before the world. After all, it may be said, there is nothing very surprising in the fact that a person should change his mind on religious subjects, or that having joined the Church of Rome, he should afterwards discover that he had not thoroughly mastered the momentous question between that Church and the rest of Christendom. Why, then, should I trouble the world with statements which would be regarded with indifference by all except my own personal friends and acquaintances? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reasons for Attachment and Conformity to the Church of England IN submitting the following pages to the Public, the Author redeems a pledge which he gave, of stating the reasons of that decided avowal, which a sense of duty constrained him to make, of his preference of the com munion and ministry of the Established Church. He is not ashamed to acknowledge, that for several years he discharged the arduous and responsible duties Of pastor of several respectable dissenting congregations. He takes this opportunity of gratefully acknowledging the candour with which his ministry was received, as also the kindness and respect he experienced among them. He feels peculiar pleasure in this way of ex pressing his gratitude to several respectable dissenting ministers, for the handsome manner in which they voluntarily bore testimony to his character and motives at the time when he resigned his ministerial connexion with them. It is satisfactory to the Author to know, that he has vindicated the motives by which he was influenced, by the sacrifices he has made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Faith or Fear: An Appeal to the Church of England On this common basis each author has made his contribution to the book, in complete independence of all the others. While this book was passing through the press the Westminster Gazette on June 21st, under the general title What is Wrong with the Churches 7 published a remarkable article on The People and the Church, by Sir Harry Johnston. In that article the writer speaks of the partial frankness of certain of the leaders of the Church in discussing the relation of the Church and the People. He goes on to declare that the reason why people stay away from Church - a reason which no professional clergyman or pastor will admit - is that much of the traditions, teachings and precepts of the Christian Churches are entirely out of date. Those who read this book will see that its authors are to a great extent in agreement with this writer, and at the same time will probably acquit them of the charge of being only partial in their frankness. This is an old complaint: for it has travelled down to us from the very earliest times of patriarchs and prophets; and the records of all ages have borne ample testimony to its justice. Truth is indeed a stranger on the earth. She dwells amongst those who know her not; and therefore meets continually with enemies and calumniators. Book Plain Reasons Against Joining the Church of Rome Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plain Reasons Against Joining the Church of Rome Classic Reprint written by Richard Frederick Littledale and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Reasons Against Joining the Church of Rome I. This book makes no attempt to cover the whole area of the controversy to which it relates. Indeed, as Roman disputants are perpetually shifting their ground, instead of always appealing, as Anglicans do, to the Word of God and the historical witness of the Church Catholic, it would be practically impossible to do that. It is confined strictly to a few practical questions which affect all members of the Church, laity and clergy alike, and omits not only all purely speculative discussions, interesting to theologians alone, but also all matters of which it can fairly be said that Rome and England have any common ground of agreement, however they may differ in details, or in mode of expression. II. It is defensive, and not aggressive in design, and is therefore not addressed to born Roman Catholics, nor does it undertake to measure their responsibility, or to point out their duty. To their own Master they stand or fall. But it is addressed to those who have seceded, or are tempted to secession, from the Church of England to the Roman Communion; that they may see what is the true nature of the accountability with which they are charging themselves in following their own private judgment, rather than the providential order of God; and to remind them of that saying of the Master: "No man, also, having drunk old wine, straightway desireth new; for he saith, The old is better" (St. Luke v. 39).
