Book Faith Reason and the Existence of God

Download or read book Faith Reason and the Existence of God written by Denys Turner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposition that the existence of God is demonstrable by rational argument is doubted by nearly all philosophical opinion today and is thought by most Christian theologians to be incompatible with Christian faith. This book argues that, on the contrary, there are reasons of faith why in principle the existence of God should be thought rationally demonstrable and that it is worthwhile revisiting the theology of Thomas Aquinas to see why this is so. The book further suggests that philosophical objections to proofs of God's existence rely upon an attenuated and impoverished conception of reason which theologians of all monotheistic traditions might wish to reject. Denys Turner proposes that on a broader and deeper conception of it, human rationality is open to the 'sacramental shape' of creation as such and in its exercise of rational proof of God it in some way participates in that sacramentality of all things.

Book The Meaning of Human Existence

Download or read book The Meaning of Human Existence written by Edward O. Wilson and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist. How did humanity originate and why does a species like ours exist on this planet? Do we have a special place, even a destiny in the universe? Where are we going, and perhaps, the most difficult question of all, "Why?" In The Meaning of Human Existence, his most philosophical work to date, Pulitzer Prize–winning biologist Edward O. Wilson grapples with these and other existential questions, examining what makes human beings supremely different from all other species. Searching for meaning in what Nietzsche once called "the rainbow colors" around the outer edges of knowledge and imagination, Wilson takes his readers on a journey, in the process bridging science and philosophy to create a twenty-first-century treatise on human existence—from our earliest inception to a provocative look at what the future of mankind portends. Continuing his groundbreaking examination of our "Anthropocene Epoch," which he began with The Social Conquest of Earth, described by the New York Times as "a sweeping account of the human rise to domination of the biosphere," here Wilson posits that we, as a species, now know enough about the universe and ourselves that we can begin to approach questions about our place in the cosmos and the meaning of intelligent life in a systematic, indeed, in a testable way. Once criticized for a purely mechanistic view of human life and an overreliance on genetic predetermination, Wilson presents in The Meaning of Human Existence his most expansive and advanced theories on the sovereignty of human life, recognizing that, even though the human and the spider evolved similarly, the poet's sonnet is wholly different from the spider's web. Whether attempting to explicate "The Riddle of the Human Species," "Free Will," or "Religion"; warning of "The Collapse of Biodiversity"; or even creating a plausible "Portrait of E.T.," Wilson does indeed believe that humanity holds a special position in the known universe. The human epoch that began in biological evolution and passed into pre-, then recorded, history is now more than ever before in our hands. Yet alarmed that we are about to abandon natural selection by redesigning biology and human nature as we wish them, Wilson soberly concludes that advances in science and technology bring us our greatest moral dilemma since God stayed the hand of Abraham.

  • Author : Floyd Brown
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2015-12-03

  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Universal Meaning written by Floyd Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all strive to understand our world. Most of us ponder the meaning of existence and search for purpose in our lives. The answers we seek are not easily found, for the wisdom needed to do so is not easily acquired. It is not fruit that can be plucked from a tree, but a mountain that must be climbed. The climb involves an ongoing search for truth about our world and ourselves. It is in the spirit of such a search that this book is offered for your consideration. It is a scientifically-grounded journey in search of the meaning for your (and my) existence; one that is linked with the meaning for the existence of our species, the existence of life and the existence of everything. The Journey begins with an exploration of our Universe, to understand that from which our existence comes. It continues with an examination of our strengths and weaknesses as a species, as well as of the world that we have created. It then provides pertinent recommendations regarding changes and actions that each of us can embrace as individuals, and that we most likely must embrace as a species, if we are to continue to thrive (and perhaps even to survive) on this earth and, eventually, within our Universe. The Journey within this book is one that can serve as either the beginning, or the continuation, of a never-ending search for understanding of some of the most important issues in our lives.

Book Who Designed the Designer

Download or read book Who Designed the Designer written by Michael Augros and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ಜNew Atheistsಝ are pulling no punches. If the world of nature needs a designer, they ask, then why wouldn't the designer itself need a designer, too? Or if it can exist without any designer behind it, then why can't we just say the same for the universe and wash our hands of a designer altogether? Interweaving its pursuit of the First Cause with personal stories and humor, this ground-breaking book takes a fresh approach to ultimate questions. While attentive to empirical science, it builds its case not on authoritative pronouncements of experts that readers must take on faith, but instead on a nuanced understanding of universal principles implicit in everyone's experience. Here is essential reading for all people who care about contemplating God, not exclusively as a best-explanation for the findings of science, but also as the surprising-yet-inevitable implication of our commonsense contact with reality. Augros harnesses such intellects as Plato, Aristotle, and Aquinas, ushering into the light a wealth of powerful inferences that have hitherto received little or no public exposure. The result is an easygoing yet extraordinary journey, beginning from the world as we all encounter it and ending in the divine mind.

Book Five Proofs of the Existence of God

Download or read book Five Proofs of the Existence of God written by Edward Feser and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2017-08-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed, updated exposition and defense of five of the historically most important (but in recent years largely neglected) philosophical proofs of God’s existence: the Aristotelian, the Neo-Platonic, the Augustinian, the Thomistic, and the Rationalist. It also offers a thorough treatment of each of the key divine attributes—unity, simplicity, eternity, omnipotence, omniscience, perfect goodness, and so forth—showing that they must be possessed by the God whose existence is demonstrated by the proofs. Finally, it answers at length all of the objections that have been leveled against these proofs. This work provides as ambitious and complete a defense of traditional natural theology as is currently in print. Its aim is to vindicate the view of the greatest philosophers of the past— thinkers like Aristotle, Plotinus, Augustine, Aquinas, Leibniz, and many others— that the existence of God can be established with certainty by way of purely rational arguments. It thereby serves as a refutation both of atheism and of the fideism that gives aid and comfort to atheism.

Book The Reason Love Exist Laughter is Living

Download or read book The Reason Love Exist Laughter is Living written by Lorenzo Maurice Davis and published by Writers Republic LLC. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book is not about laughter, it loves, then laughs. Reason is explained and time is ordered the everything that finds light in poetry reminds us of intimate competition. When we evolve into meaning we grow in religion and then our beliefs about truth engender perfection. This we see as ideology but in historical justice equality is realized by justification. Logic then rules our preferences.
