Download or read book Aircraft Carriers written by Norman Polmar and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-01-31 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the post-1945 era, the aircraft carrier has remained a valued weapon despite the development of nuclear weapons, cruise and ballistic missiles, and highly capable submarines. At times, as in the early days of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and in the Falklands conflict, carriers alone could deploy high-performance aircraft to the battlefield. In other operations, such as enforcing the no-fly zones and the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, only carriers could provide the bases needed for sustained combat and support operations. This second volume of Norman Polmar's landmark study details the role of carriers in the unification of the U.S. armed forces and strategic deterrence, fiscally constrained Great Britain, the development of British Commonwealth and ex-colonial navies, and the efforts of France and the Netherlands to rebuild their fleets. The role of the modern carrier-nine nations currently possess them-is discussed, as are the issues confronting nations that might acquire them. Chapters on the Soviet Union's effort to produce carriers are included for the first time. The development of both carrier planes and the many "oddball" aircraft that have flown from carriers-such as the U-2 spy plane-are also examined. Appendixes include comprehensive data on all carriers built and converted through 2006. This volume is a valuable companion to the critically acclaimed Volume I, which covers aircraft carrier development and operations from 1909 to 1945.

Book All Ahead Full

Download or read book All Ahead Full written by William M. Craighead and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2004 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LSM 215 Veteran William M. Craighead recounts his memoirs of LSM 215 life during World War II. *Read about the USS LSM 215 with its crew of young men, two-thirds of whom were younger than 20; and their 22 months together aboard ship. Coming from all parts of America, most had never been to sea before. Traveling on the open ocean on a landing craft became a staggering adventure but they learned to adapt to long periods at sea on a vessel with a shallow draft and no keel... *The part LSM 215 played in the war in the Pacific...the invasion of Okinawa. The historic battle included the largest onslaught of the war by suicidal kamikaze pilots. It was at Okinawa that the Navy suffered its heaviest losses in ships and manpower during World War II. Miraculously, all the crew survived with two shipmates receiving the Purple Heart as a result of kamikaze attacks... *Their journey as they took occupation troops and supplies into Northern China, a China still ancient and medieval. Finally, homeward bound, after only a few days at sea, the ship began to leak badly at several vulnerable locations. Read how the crew worked day and night for two weeks, manning the pumps until the got to Pearl Harbor. They were going home, so it was ALL AHEAD FULL! *And much more...

Book The Amphibians Came to Conquer The Story of Richmond Kelly Turner

Download or read book The Amphibians Came to Conquer The Story of Richmond Kelly Turner written by Vice Admiral George C. Dyer and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes over 110 maps, charts and illustrations. His nickname was “Terrible Turner.” He was, according to one ensign who served with him prior to World War II, “the meanest man I ever saw, and the most competent naval officer I ever served with.” He led the successful amphibious attacks on Guadalcanal, Makin, Kwajalein, Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. He was Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner, one of the key figures in America’s defeat of Japan. In this fascinating and comprehensive biography, Vice Admiral George C. Dyer documents the tough and fearless leadership of Admiral Turner, his astonishing success in meeting some of the toughest challenges in the history of amphibious warfare, and detailed descriptions of the ships and men who fought under him. More than just a biography, The Amphibians Came to Conquer is a carefully documented history, both strategic and tactical, of the major campaigns in the Pacific from Guadalcanal to Okinawa, providing a wealth of information on how Terrible Turner and the men he commanded conquered island after island against a tough and determined foe. In an astonishing tribute to the tenacity of Turner and his men, a February 21, 1945 Japanese broadcast said: “The true nature of an alligator is that once he bites into something, he will not let go. Turner’s nature is also like this.” This remarkable book belongs in the library of any serious student of the war in the Pacific.

Book The Royal Navy China Station 1864 1941

Download or read book The Royal Navy China Station 1864 1941 written by Jonathan Parkinson and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive history of the Royal Navy’s China Station. In the The Navy List for April 1864 the China Station was first shown as a separate Royal Navy Station . It remained as such until the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1941 which was to signal the end of that era. In addition to a precis of the lives and naval careers of each of the Commanders in Chief of the China Station, this volume also gives relevant information outlining something of the concurrent internal affairs of China and Japan. Both are very different but sad tales, the former in decline towards the end of the Manchu Ch’ing dynasty and then into the chaotic 1920’s and 1930’s, and the latter increasingly adopting a militaristic attitude which was to result in their disaster of the Pacific War of 1941-1945. As a reminder of these days long gone are interwoven brief references to the British Consular Service. This is especially relevant for China, and for a shorter period for Japan during that era of extraterritoriality. Mention is also made of the British Colonial Service with whom, necessarily, the Navy worked very closely. In addition, being one important reason for it all, frequent references are made to a few British shipping and trading interests together with those of some other nations. All of these areas are linked together to give a definitive history of this very important Royal Navy Station.
