Book excerpt: Fifth in a series of six programs on the natural history of Russia and the central Asian republics. This segment explores Siberia, stretching across the northern reaches of Russia, a land of extremes and superlatives. It has the greatest forest on earth, an immense expanse of spruce, pine and fir spanning 6,000 miles. From the wolves and the elks to the musk deer, all its inhabitants have one thing in common: the ability to survive temperatures which can plummet to 90 degrees below zero. Lake Baikal, in the southeast, is the oldest and deepest on earth and is home to a host of unusual creatures. Descending to depths of more than 2,500 feet, cameras catch glimpses of the lake's hidden denizens--forests of sponges, transparent fish, and bizarre crustaceans found nowhere else. Baikal, too, falls under the reign of the bears, who emerge in vast numbers from the forest to hunt along the edge of the lake.

Book Believe Me I Was There

Download or read book Believe Me I Was There written by Hacene Zitouni and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believe Me is a lively and dramatic account of one man's struggle to make two cultures meet. In 1990 Zitouni started broadcasting news for MBC (Middle-eastern Broadcasting Company) in Arabic from London. MBC was the first station to give Arab viewers, at home and in the worldwide diaspora, their own news programmes. For the first time, interviewees were heard speaking demotic Arabic of their own regions. MBC's Western impartiality and lack of deference was controversial but on the whole, popular. As a country boy born into newly independent Algeria in the 1960s, Zitouni had been educated by the state and sent to Britain on a journalism scholarship. He became a war correspondent in '91. His career has taken him to trouble spots in Yemen, Chechnya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Somalia, Bosnia, Indonesia and many other countries. He has made Panorama-style documentaries in both American continents and interviewed historic figures. He was detained and interrogated by Gaddafi's army for many weeks, and interviewed some of the wilder insurgents fighting Bashar al Assad. Zitouni recounts the ups and downs of his own fast-developing career against a background in which commercial and local political considerations have come to play a much greater part. Based for many years in London, Paris and Dubai, he has seen the agenda of Arab television changing. Although MBC is funded by the Saudi royal family, its ethos when it began was impartial and cautiously liberal. In 1994, after a culture clash with a new BBC Arabic service, the Qatari royals set up the rival Al Jazeera to do what MBC had always done. In response, MBC changed tack, offering multiple entertainment streams and eventually a subsidiary: a re-invention of its original news channel called Al Arabiya. While all this was going on Zitouni was Director General of a third channel that promised to lead the field - but turned out to belong to a billionaire fraudster. Now he shows us where Arab TV seems to be going...

Book In Search of the Russian Bear

Download or read book In Search of the Russian Bear written by Patrick D. Smith and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1983, Florida author Patrick Smith and his wife Iris traveled throughout the Soviet Union and Uzbekistan through an invitation from the Soviet Writers Union. Smith relates these experiences through fascinating stories and images in the fun, factual chronicle. This story takes place in a time when the former Soviet Union was still very much the Soviet Union and was known throughout the Western World as “The Iron Curtain.” It was a land of mystery and intrigue and few Americans visited there except in guided tour groups. Fewer still were given the opportunity to mingle freely with the people. This book is in no way a political treatise. It is a story of people, places, and things. Perhaps it will give the reader an intimate glimpse of ordinary, everyday people both in Russia and Middle Asia. Hopefully, it will also bring alive some fascinating places you may never have the opportunity to see first-hand. There is high humor in this book, as well as heartfelt moments. It paints vivid pictures of places few Americans have seen or will see. The descriptions are so real that readers will feel that they have been there. There is also much in this book for food lovers to enjoy. The descriptions of food, both Russian and Uzbek, are exceptional. In Search of The Russian Bear is unlike any other book set in Eastern Europe and Middle Asia. It is unique and will take readers on a fascinating journey.
