Book excerpt: The demand for more and more computer power in numerical weather prediction and meteorological research is as strong as ever. Previously, the world meteorological community tried to meet this demand by exploiting parallelism. In this field, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts has established itself as the central venue for bringing together operational weather forecasters, climate researchers and parallel computer manufacturers to share their experiences through a series of workshops held every other year. This book reports on the latest such workshop. It gives an excellent overview of the latest achievements in this field. The demand for and the developments towards Teracomputing, the next order of magnitude in meteorological supercomputing, are given particular attention.

Book High Resolution Numerical Modelling of the Atmosphere and Ocean

Download or read book High Resolution Numerical Modelling of the Atmosphere and Ocean written by Kevin Hamilton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-25 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly relevant text documents the first international meeting focused specifically on high-resolution atmospheric and oceanic modeling. It was held recently at the Earth Simulator Center in Yokohama, Japan. Rather than producing a standard conference proceedings volume, the editors have decided to compose this volume entirely of papers written by invited speakers at the meeting, who report on their most exciting recent results involving high resolution modeling.

Book Use of High Performance Computing in Meteorology

Download or read book Use of High Performance Computing in Meteorology written by George Mozdzynski and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of a four-year long comparative research study centered at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and financed by the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme, Social Pacts in Europe presents the first full-length theoretical and comparative empirical study of new social pacts in Europe. Its aim is to bring the level of sophistication achieved in an earlier literature on neo-corporatism to the more contemporary phenomenon of 'social pacting'. The book brings a wide range of complementary theories to bear on the emergence, evolution and institutionalization of pacts, compares systematically a wide range of cases across Europe, and provides in-depth studies of Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia. Social Pacts in Europe contributes to the scholarly debate on economic adjustment and institutional change in European capitalism by focusing on three inter-related questions: (i) what explains national variation in reliance on social pacts; (ii) what determines the outcomes of individual pact negotiations; and (iii) under what conditions are pacts repeated and become regular features of socio-economic governance? The book's theoretical innovations include a novel application of fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fs/QCA) to help explain national differences in social pact adoption; the application of a game theoretic approach to explain social pact emergence; and a reinterpretation of traditional neo-corporatist and new institutionalist theory to help understand social pact consolidation and institutionalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adult or postnatal stem cells offer life-long cell replacement in tissues and organs, and are thus unavoidable targets of long-term and transient regenerative/epigenetic gene therapy for both inherited and acquired diseases; and effective anticancer therapy. In particular, autologous stem cells have been instrumental to the success of gene therapy, enabling breakthrough endonuclease-boosted gene targeting for gene correction (inherited diseases) or targeted integration of therapeutic transgenes (other disorders). This timely book highlights the pioneering translation of adult pluripotent stem cells as a substitute for tissue-specific stem cells, thereby pinpointing the invaluable potential for stem cell gene therapy applications of autologous cells to contribute to all three germ players. Pathologies are discussed in terms of stem cell repopulation dynamics, with appropriate niches (long-term engraftment) and tissues (cell turnover). Focus is also placed on the increasing number of identified tissue-specific cancer stem cells as the ultimate targets for recurrence-free cancer recovery, and on the development of armed stem cells as tumor-homing vectors for targeted anticancer stem cell gene therapy.
