It offers a timely and illuminating appraisal of the issues surrounding the development of new media in Europe and explores debates about the role of the media in the formation of a European public sphere and a European identity. The book argues that Europe offers an ideal context for examining interactions between global, regional and national media processes and its individual chapters consider: the changing structure of the European media; the development of new media; the Europeanization of the media in the region; the challenges for the content; and audiences. Special emphasis is given to the transformation of political communication in Europe and the alleged emergence of a European public sphere and identity. European Media: Structures, Politics and Identity is an invaluable text for courses on media and international studies as well as courses dealing with European and national policy studies. It is also helpful to students, researchers and professionals in the media sector since it combines hard facts with theoretical insight.

Book The Integration of Cultural Considerations in EU Law and Policies

Download or read book The Integration of Cultural Considerations in EU Law and Policies written by Evangelia Psychogiopoulou and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pursuant to Article 151(4) EC, when exercising its competences under the various policy areas within its purview, the European Community must heed the cultural repercussions of its activities, so as to refrain from jeopardising the preservation and further enhancement of Member States’ cultural diversity. Evaluating the degree of accommodation, or lack thereof, of cultural considerations in EC law and action, this book offers valuable insight into the plethora of ways in which the European institutions seek to balance cultural with other legitimate EC policy objectives. The study draws upon a series of policy areas that are (or can be) enriched with a cultural dimension and examines concrete judicial and legislative instances attesting to the efforts deployed to deliver coherent, culture-sensitive policies at EC level.

Book Brexit and the Digital Single Market

Download or read book Brexit and the Digital Single Market written by Alison Harcourt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Digital Single Market (DSM) comprised numerous Directives, Regulations, and other instruments aimed at facilitating cross-border digital services, including access to banking, shopping, streaming, and satellite television across European Union borders without restrictions. With one-fifth of service exports stemming from the digital sector, the DSM was vital for the UK, with the EU representing its largest digital services export market. Brexit and the Digital Single Market examines the important historical role of the UK in DSM development, the consequences of Brexit for the UK's digital sector, and future EU and UK policy trajectories. The book illuminates how the UK continues to innovate in the digital sector but also how it is constrained by external factors both at EU and global levels. It considers how EU policy is taking a new direction in its 2020 Digital Strategy programme which leans towards greater protection of European champions and digital sovereignty, a tightening of its data protection regime, and greater regulatory intervention in digital markets. Timely and unprecedented, Brexit and the Digital Single Market is the first volume to comprehensively cover the implications of Brexit on the EU's DSM. This is an essential read for students and academics in political science and law, as well as civil servants, regulators, and policy makers working within the digital sector.

Book The European Union and the Regulation of Media Markets

Download or read book The European Union and the Regulation of Media Markets written by Alison Harcourt and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National broadcasting and press regulation is undergoing a process of convergence in Europe. This book, newly available in paperback, explains how this process has been shaped by the actions of the European Union (EU) institutions.Alison Harcourt observes that whilst communications is one of the EU's most successful policy areas, European decision-making is eroding the national capacity to regulate for the public interest. European-level efforts to protect public interest goals have been constrained by the European Treaties. The author argues that increased European coordination in public interest regulation could be more conducive to growth and competitiveness than the dismantling of existing national laws. This, however, would require changes to the political composition of the European Union. This book assesses the potential EU media regulation provides for market growth and the protection of media pluralism, the citizen and ultimately democracy itself. These opportunities are presented in the coming decade with the developing European Constitution, EU enlargement, and the implementation and revision of European regulation.

Book The European Union and culture

Download or read book The European Union and culture written by Annabelle Littoz-Monnet and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union and culture explains why and how the European Union has started to intervene in the cultural policy sector – understood here as the public policies aimed at supporting and regulating the arts and cultural industries. It is the first comprehensive and theoretically informed account of the Communitarisation process of the cultural policy sector. Before 1992, no legal basis for EU intervention in the field of culture appeared in the Treaties. Member states were, in any case, reluctant to share their competences in a policy sector considered to be an area of national sovereignty. In such circumstances, how was the Communitarisation of the policy sector ever possible? Who were the policy actors that played a role in this process? What were their motives? And why were certain actors more influential than others? This book will be of great use to all researchers and students of European integration and European public policy.

Book Media Moguls

Download or read book Media Moguls written by Michael Palmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of a few powerful individuals in control of large sections of mass communication industries has coincided with world-wide media de-regulation. In the first book to take a close look at media moguls as a species, Jeremy Tunstall and Michael Palmer show how a handful of own-and-operate entrepreneurs run their empires with a highly eccentric and highly political management style. Individuals such as Berlusconi, Hersant, and Murdoch, in France, Germany, Italy, Britain and the US, are considered in the context of the changing European media industry. The book considers other, non-mogul trends: the emergence of a European media policy and a European-US-Japanese world media industry. Additional case studies focus on Reuters as a news-and-data super-agency and the part played by advertising and other media lobbies in shaping media policy.

Book Much Ado about Culture

Download or read book Much Ado about Culture written by Archibald Lloyd Keith Acheson and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Canada, the audio-visual and print industries are referred to as the cultural industries, whereas the United States calls them the entertainment industries. These language distinctions are accompanied by different domestic policies and political discourses. The United States has relatively open policies toward these activities, while Canada has adopted an inward-looking approach. Failure to integrate cultural industries into NAFTA and WTO has led to trade disputes between Canada and the United States over copyrights, television licensing, violence in media, and discriminatory magazine policy, indicating the need for an agreed-upon process for settling cultural trade disputes. Much Ado about Culture explores the differing sets of policies--cultural nationalism versus the open option--and the resulting conflicts in the context of technological developments as well as international agreements dealing with trade, investment, copyright, and labor movements. The Canadian cultural industries are examined, from film and television production and distribution to broadcasting, publishing, and sound recording. Several areas of recent conflict, such as Sports Illustrated, Country Music Television, and Borders Books, highlight the types of policies disputed, the process followed, and the conclusions reached. Finally, the authors propose an alternative approach to constraining national cultural policies by international agreement that would allow the gains from openness to be realized while serving legitimate cultural concerns. Authored by the acknowledged experts on trade disputes in the cultural arena, this book will be essential reading for international economists, policymakers, and lawyers interested in the cultural industries. Keith Acheson and Christopher Maule are Professors of Economics, Carleton University, Ontario.

Book Difference and Community

Download or read book Difference and Community written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together essays which suggest that the relationship between Canada and Europe is a two-way process, as historically the traffic between them has been: either may have something to offer the other. Europe too acknowledges situations today in which difference and community are hard terms to reconcile. Difference refers to gender, sexuality, race, nationality, or language. Community is the collective understanding which must continually be renegotiated and reconstructed among these factors. The Canadian-European connection is one in which it seems especially appropriate to explore such circumstances. The topics covered include pioneer women's writing, transcultural women's fiction, canonical taxonomy of the contemporary novel, the city poem in Confederate Canada, poetry of the Great War, various ethno-cultural perspectives (Jewish, South Asian, Italian; Native reappropriations; Quebec cinema), literature and the media, and small-press publishing. Some of the authors treated: Sandra Birdsell, Nicole Brossard, Jack Hodgins, Henry Kreisel, Robert Kroetsch, Janice Kulyk Keefer, Archibald Lampman, Malcolm Lowry, Lesley Lum, Daphne Marlatt, Susanna Moodie, Bharati Mukherjee, Alice Munro, Frank Paci, and Susan Swan.

Book Culture and International Economic Law

Download or read book Culture and International Economic Law written by Valentina Vadi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and international economic governance offer unprecedented opportunities for cultural exchange. Foreign direct investments can promote cultural diversity and provide the funds needed to locate, recover and preserve cultural heritage. Nonetheless, globalization and international economic governance can also jeopardize cultural diversity and determine the erosion of the cultural wealth of nations. Has an international economic culture emerged that emphasizes productivity and economic development at the expense of the common wealth? This book explores the ‘clash of cultures’ between international law and international cultural law, and asks whether States can promote economic development without infringing their cultural wealth. The book contains original chapters by experts in the field. Key issues include how international courts and tribunals are adjudicating culture–related cases; the interplay between indigenous peoples' rights and economic globalization; and the relationships between culture, human rights, and economic activities. The book will be of great interest and use to researchers and students of international trade law, cultural heritage law, and public international law.
