Book Terahertz Focal Plane Array for Terahertz Time Domain Imaging

Download or read book Terahertz Focal Plane Array for Terahertz Time Domain Imaging written by Xurong Li and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging systems operating in the terahertz part of the electromagnetic spectrum are in great demand because of the distinct characteristics of terahertz waves in penetrating many optically-opaque materials and providing unique spectral signatures of various chemicals. However, the use of terahertz imagers in real-world applications has been limited by the slow speed, large size, high cost, and complexity of the existing imaging systems. These limitations are mainly imposed due to the lack of terahertz focal-plane arrays (THz-FPAs) that can directly provide the frequency-resolved and/or time-resolved spatial information of the imaged objects. During my doctoral studies, I designed, fabricated, and characterized the first THz-FPA that can directly provide the spatial amplitude and phase distributions, along with the ultrafast temporal and spectral information of an imaged object. It consists of a two-dimensional array of ~0.3 million plasmonic photoconductive nanoantennas optimized to rapidly detect broadband terahertz radiation with a high SNR. Terahertz time-domain imaging on amplitude and phase objects is demonstrated in both terahertz lens-free and lens-based imaging systems. By eliminating the need for raster scanning and spatial terahertz modulation, our THz-FPA offers more than a 1000-fold increase in imaging speed compared to the state-of-the-art. The high imaging speed enables the first terahertz video taken in a terahertz time-domain imaging system with a frame rate of 16 fps. The unprecedented rich information in the terahertz time-domain imaging data can facilitate many new applications. As the first proof-of-concept, we utilized the multispectral nature of the amplitude and phase data captured by the plasmonic photoconductive THz-FPA to realize pixel super-resolution imaging of objects. We successfully imaged and super-resolved etched patterns in a silicon substrate and reconstructed both the shape and depth of these structures with an effective number of pixels that exceeds 1 kilo pixels. We also super-resolved the terahertz video at 16 fps of a water flow in three adjacent plastic pipes using a holographic reconstruction algorithm. Beyond these proof-of-concept super-resolution demonstrations, the unique capabilities enabled by our plasmonic photoconductive THz-FPA offer transformative advances in a broad range of applications that use hyperspectral and three-dimensional terahertz images of objects for e.g., industrial inspection, security screening, and medical diagnosis, among others.

Book Non iterative Methods for Image Improvement in Digital Holography of the Retina

Download or read book Non iterative Methods for Image Improvement in Digital Holography of the Retina written by Julie Rivet and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increase of the number of people with moderate to severe visual impairment, monitoring and treatment of vision disorders have become major issues in medicine today. At the Quinze-Vingts national ophthalmology hospital in Paris, two optical benches have been settled in recent years to develop two real-time digital holography techniques for the retina: holographic optical coherence tomography (OCT) and laser Doppler holography. The first reconstructs three-dimensional images, while the second allows visualization of blood flow in vessels. Besides problems inherent to the imaging system itself, optical devices are subject to external disturbance, bringing also difficulties in imaging and loss of accuracy. The main obstacles these technologies face are eye motion and eye aberrations. In this thesis, we have introduced several methods for image quality improvement in digital holography, and validated them experimentally. The resolution of holographic images has been improved by robust non-iterative methods: lateral and axial tracking and compensation of translation movements, and measurement and compensation of optical aberrations. This allows us to be optimistic that structures on holographic images of the retina will be more visible and sharper, which could ultimately provide very valuable information to clinicians.

Book Information Metamaterials

Download or read book Information Metamaterials written by Tie Jun Cui and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metamaterials have attracted enormous interests from both physics and engineering communities in the past 20 years, owing to their powerful ability in manipulating electromagnetic waves. However, the functionalities of traditional metamaterials are fixed at the time of fabrication. To control the EM waves dynamically, active components are introduced to the meta-atoms, yielding active metamaterials. Recently, a special kind of active metamaterials, digital coding and programmable metamaterials, are proposed, which can achieve dynamically controllable functionalities using field programmable gate array (FPGA). Most importantly, the digital coding representations of metamaterials set up a bridge between the digital world and physical world, and allow metamaterials to process digital information directly, leading to information metamaterials. In this Element, we review the evolution of information metamaterials, mainly focusing on their basic concepts, design principles, fabrication techniques, experimental measurement and potential applications. Future developments of information metamaterials are also envisioned.

  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book Metasurface Holography written by Zi-Lan Deng and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The merging of metasurface and holography brings about unprecedented opportunities for versatile manipulation of light in terms of both far-field wavefront and near-field profile. In this book, a brief evolving history from surface plasmon polariton holography to metamaterial holography and finally to metasurface holography is introduced at first. Basic physical mechanisms that govern the phase modulation rules behind metasurface holography design are discussed later. Next, extended functionalities such as arbitrary polarization holography, vectorial holography, full-color holography, and hybrid holography achieved in the metasurface platform are presented. Surface wave and metagrating holography that bridges the on-chip surface wave and free-space wave is also introduced. In the end, we envisage practical applications of high-fidelity 3D holographic display, high-secure encryption, and high capacity digital encoding and also indicate remaining challenges based on metasurface holography.
