Book Flow Visualization in Materials Processing

Download or read book Flow Visualization in Materials Processing written by Tomomasa Uemura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive review of particle image velocimetry (PIV) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) as tools for experimental fluid dynamics (EFD). It shares practical techniques for high-speed photography to accurately analyze multi-phase flows; in particular, it addresses the practical know-how involved in high-speed photography, including e.g. the proper setup for lights and illumination; optical systems to remove perspective distortion; and the density of tracer particles and their fluorescence in the context of PIV and PTV. In this regard, using the correct photographic technique plays a key role in the accurate analysis of the respective flow. Practical applications include bubble and liquid flow dynamics in materials processes agitated by gas injection at high temperatures, mixing phenomena due to jet-induced rotary sloshing, and wettability effects on the efficiency of the processes.

Book Techniques for Visualizing Particle based Flow Fields

Download or read book Techniques for Visualizing Particle based Flow Fields written by Jennifer Sara Chandler and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a variety of techniques for visualizing particle-based flow fields, in particular Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations. Visualization techniques developed with the structure of a particle-based flow field in mind can have better performance and accuracy than ones adapted from vector field flow simulations. The first such technique is an illustrative rendering approach to visualizing particle systems created from advecting particles in fluid simulations. Techniques such as volume rendering, silhouette edges, and trajectory arrows allow the user to understand what is happening in the flow field both at a single time step and over time. The second technique is a WebGL-based remote visualization system for SPH data. Users can view a volume rendering of the SPH data stored as an octree on a remote server without having to download the full data set. The next technique is an interpolation-based approach to tracing pathlines in particle-based flow fields. This technique focuses on SPH simulations and uses the smoothing kernel to weight neighboring simulation particle trajectories to create new pathlines. The final contribution is an analysis of the interpolation-based pathline tracing approach. We classify the sources of error in the particle advection in relation to various flow properties such as trajectory length, particle neighborhood change, and stretching in the flow field. We present a theoretical bound on the advection error using this pathline tracing method.

Book Estimating Particle Velocity From Dual Camera Mixed Reality Video Images Using 3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry

Download or read book Estimating Particle Velocity From Dual Camera Mixed Reality Video Images Using 3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry written by Thomas Chivers and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixed reality (MR) systems integrate diverse sensors, allowing users to better visualize and quantify surrounding environmental processes. Some existing mixed reality headsets include synchronized front-facing cameras that, among other things, can be used to track naturally occurring tracer particles (such as dust or snowflakes) to estimate particle velocity field in real time. The current work presents a 3D particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) method for use with MR systems, which combines various monocular cues to match particles between corresponding stereo images. Binocular disparity is used to estimate particle distance from an observer. Individual particles are tracked through time and used to construct the vector field of a scene. A digital display of velocity vectors can be broadcasted into a user's surrounding environment with the MR headset to be used as a flow visualization tool. The mixed reality particle tracking velocimetry (MR-PTV) approach was optimized to perform in natural conditions where particle size, particle color, and lighting are non-uniform. The approach was first tested using synthetic particle image data obtained by discrete element method simulations then experimentally validated for particles transported by a flume flow using the Microsoft HoloLens 2 MR headset. Uniform flow and flow around a body were considered experimentally. Experimental velocity measurements are compared to computational fluid dynamics results. The resulting MR-PTV system can be used for a variety of industry, scientific and recreational purposes for field-based measurement of particle velocities in real time.

Book Statistical Treatment of Turbulent Polydisperse Particle Systems

Download or read book Statistical Treatment of Turbulent Polydisperse Particle Systems written by J.S. Shrimpton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we will introduce the modeling process of turbulent particulate flows which are encountered in many engineering and environmental applications. These types of flows usually also involve heat and mass transfer and turbulence adds another dimension to the complexity of the problem and hence a rigorous mathematical treatment is usually required. This required mathematical background makes the learning curve for new research students and practicing engineers extremely steep. Therefore modeling process for new or existing problems is extremely slow and is usually restricted to minor improvements to the to the available models. In this book we try to gather the required mathematical knowledge and introduce them more intuitively. Many numerical simulations of basic processes and equation will be given to provide the reader with a physical understanding of the different terms in the underlying equations. We will start the modeling process from a mesoscopic level which deals with the system of an intermediate length scale between the size of the atoms or molecules and the bulk of the material. This provides a unique opportunity for the reader to intuitively add different phenomena to their models and equipped with the necessary mathematical tools derive the final models for their problems.

Book excerpt: This book aims to face particles in flows from many different, but essentially interconnected sides and points of view. Thus the selection of authors and topics represented in the chapters, ranges from deep mathematical analysis of the associated models, through the techniques of their numerical solution, towards real applications and physical implications. The scope and structure of the book as well as the selection of authors was motivated by the very successful summer course and workshop "Particles in Flows'' that was held in Prague in the August of 2014. This meeting revealed the need for a book dealing with this specific and challenging multidisciplinary subject, i.e. particles in industrial, environmental and biomedical flows and the combination of fluid mechanics, solid body mechanics with various aspects of specific applications.

Book Development of a Volumetric 3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry System and Its Application to Mixing in a Stirred Tank

Download or read book Development of a Volumetric 3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry System and Its Application to Mixing in a Stirred Tank written by Ye Cheng and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative fluid flow visualization and measurements are highly demanded in mechanical, chemical, medical and many other science and engineering fields to investigate fluid phenomena, understand theoretical principles and support computational prediction. Three-dimensional Particle Tracking Velocimetry (3D-PTV) is a powerful and comprehensive measurement technique that provides instantaneous 3D volumetric velocity information and Lagrangian description of particle trajectories. This work is based on the 3D-PTV technique that was developed at the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetric at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. Theoretical principles of the technique were studied based on geometric imaging and computer vision. A complete 3D-PTV system was designed, assembled, synchronized, and tested. A study of the accuracy of the 3D-PTV system in terms of the influence of each component was performed. 2D-PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements were done on the same experimental setup used in the 3D-PTV system. Results showed good quantitative agreement between the velocity information obtained with the two systems, which validates the results of the 3D-PTV measurement system. The developed 3D PTV system was applied to the study of mixing in a stirred tank showing that this technique has great potential for the study of low Reynolds number flows where the time-resolved trajectory of particles is important. Further improvement on the configurations and data analysis of the system can provide higher accuracy, higher spatial and temporal resolution, and less complexity, which will lead to an extension on its application.
