Book Real time Nonlinear Optical Information Processing

Download or read book Real time Nonlinear Optical Information Processing written by Ahmad Armand and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing methods for nonlinear optical processing involve an intermediate photographic step which prevents real-time operation. Although optical information processors have a large space-bandwidth product, the problem of real-time input has been a major limitation in taking advantage of this processing ability. In this research, the realization of nonlinear optical processing in real time is investigated. Several techniques for performing such operations aree presented. One approach realizes the halftone method of nonlinear optical processing in real time by replacing the conventional photographic recording medium with a real-time image transducer. In the second approach halftoning is eliminated and the real-time device is used directly. In this case the nonlinearity is obtained by the inherent nonlinear characteristic of the real-time devicce. A third method uses the ability of certain real-time devices to perform an intensity-to-spatial frequency conversion.

Book Optical Information Processing

Download or read book Optical Information Processing written by Yu Nesterikhin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the complete set of papers presented at the First U. S. -U. S. S. R. Sciences Cooperation Seminar on "Optical Information Processing" held at the U. S. National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D. C. from 16 - 20 June 1975 under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation in cooperation with the U. S. S. R. Academy of Sciences. The papers present the latest theoretical advances and ex perimental state of the art in the newly developing field of "opti cal information processing", with particular emphasis on appli cations to communication, information storage and processing. Digital as well as optical systems are discussed in terms of concepts and implementations. Included are coherent and inco herent optical processing systems (for images and signals), materials and devices for optical computing, acousto-optic signal processing, memories (optical, digital and holographic), optical logic and optically-accessed digital stores, non-linear optical processing, as well as an analysis of the information capacity of optical processing systems and a report on new ex tensions of information processing in synthetic aperture radar. Detailed configurations and new manufacturing techniques for several components are presented, including such topics as "asymmetric interference fringes in reflected light" and' kino form optical elements" of very high quality; these are phase plates having a carefully controlled thickness, somewhat com parable to the famous Schmidt plates and which could have an important role in many optical computer and communications systems.

Book Real Time Implementation of Nonlinear Optical Processing Functions

Download or read book Real Time Implementation of Nonlinear Optical Processing Functions written by B. H. Soffer and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical data processing has not yet achieved its potential of increased capacity and speed compared with conventional electronic techniques, primarily for lack of a practical real-time image modulator, and because optical techniques have been almost exclusively limited to linear operations. The continuing research outlined in this report attacks these issues by studying the implementation of real-time nonlinear parallel-processing techniques. The various implementations studied in this program all employed real-time liquid-crystal light valves developed and specially modified for these tasks.

Book excerpt: This is the second volume on "Optical Information Processing" within the scope of the US-USSR Science Cooperation Program co sponsored by the US National Science Foundation and the USSR Acad emy of Sciences Siberian Branch. Volume I was published in 1976, also by Plenum Press, and con tained the papers presented by a group of US and USSR scientists at the First US-USSR Science Cooperation Seminar "Optical Informa tion Processing" held at the US National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D. C. from 16 to 20 June 1975. The seminar was followed by a series of visits to US scientific research laboratories and universities, to which the visiting USSR scientists were escorted bv Dr. W. E. Kock and Dr. G. W. Stroke. The visits included Bell Laboratories, IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Laboratory and M. I. T. , as reported in detail in the FOREWORD of Volume I. Volume II now presents the papers presented by another group of US and USSR scientists, some having participated in the first seminar: this series of papers was presented at the Second US-USSR Science Cooperation Seminar on "Optical Information Processing" held at the USSR Academy of Sciences Siberian Branch Institute of Auto mation and Electrometry in the famous "science city" of Akademgorodok, near Novosibirsk in Siberia, USSR from 10 to 16 July 1976.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period 1 July 1987 - 30 June 1988, the research under Grant AFOSR-84-0181 has been concerned with binary parallel optical computing architectures with particular attention to cellular logic and symbolic substitution for pattern recognition and numerical operations. Our approach has been to experimentally implement binary optical cellular logic processors and interconnection arrays; define an instruction set and software suited to optical systems; and to study generalizations of optical cellular logic processors such as the hypercube and pyramid. Recent accomplishments include the experimental implementations of a 54-gate binary optical cellular processor with instruction decoders, input/output, memory and test/branch functions; symbolic operations; and the development of binary image algebra algorithms for scale and shift invariant pattern recognition. Book Nonlinear Real Time Optical Signal Processing

Download or read book Nonlinear Real Time Optical Signal Processing written by Alexander A. Sawchuk and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of the second year of a two year research program in nonlinear real-time optical signal processing are described. The research has concentrated on optical sequential logic systems for parallel digital processing and on variable grating mode (VGM) liquid crystal real-time spatial light modulators. The goal of the program is to extend fast parallel nonlinear operations to optical processing systems with large time-bandwidth and space-bandwidth products. Parallel and twisted nematic liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) devices have been used as a nonlinear element in a feedback arrangement in the binary sequential logic system. A computer generated hologram fabricated on an e-beam system serves as a beamsteering interconnection element. A completely optical oscillator and frequency divider have been experimentally demonstrated, and various circuit interconnection techniques have been explored. Research has continued on variable-grating mode (VGM) liquid crystal devices that perform local spatial frequency modulation as a function of the incident intensity.
