Book Real Time Detection of Anomalous Satellite Behavior from Ground Based Telescope Images

Download or read book Real Time Detection of Anomalous Satellite Behavior from Ground Based Telescope Images written by Geoffrey S. Maron and published by . This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Force analysts are faced with the task of monitoring satellites with ground based telescopes. Images are collected and analyzed in a time consuming and subjective effort to detect any behavior that is anomalous. This research maximizes use of a priori information to create an automated, real time satellite behavior classification tool. Using modeling software and knowledge of a satellite's orbit, reference imagery is created for each measured image in a satellite pass. Features are extracted from the measured and reference image pairs that provide good overall gaussian classification accuracy (85%), reduce the dimensionality of the problem (from 32,768 down to 3), and are least dependent on data partitioning. The statistical image pair classifier is tested for robustness to atmospheric distortion, and training data requirements are explored. Satellite behavior is classified by counting the classification results for the image pairs in a satellite pass. A binomial analysis of the classification technique predicts virtually 100% classification accuracy of satellite behavior. This research demonstrates the validity of model based satellite behavior analysis.

Book High Resolution Imaging of Satellites with Ground Based 10 m Astronomical Telescopes

Download or read book High Resolution Imaging of Satellites with Ground Based 10 m Astronomical Telescopes written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High resolution imaging of artificial satellites can play an important role in current and future space endeavors. One such use is acquiring detailed images that can be used to identify or confirm damage and aid repair plans. It is shown that a 10-m astronomical telescope equipped with an adaptive optics system (AO) to correct for atmospheric turbulence using a natural guide star can acquire high resolution images of satellites in low-orbits using a fast shutter and a near-infrared camera even if the telescope is not capable of tracking satellites. With the telescope pointing towards the satellite projected orbit and less than 30 arcsec away from a guide star, multiple images of the satellite are acquired on the detector using the fast shutter. Images can then be shifted and coadded by post processing to increase the satellite signal to noise ratio. Using the Keck telescope typical Strehl ratio and anisoplanatism angle as well as a simple diffusion/reflection model for a satellite 400 km away observed near Zenith at sunset or sunrise, it is expected that such system will produced> 10? K-band images at a resolution of 10 cm inside a 60 arcsec diameter field of view. If implemented, such camera could deliver the highest resolution satellite images ever acquired from the ground.

Book Geosynchronous Satellite Maneuver Classification and Orbital Pattern Anomaly Detection Via Supervised Machine Learning

Download or read book Geosynchronous Satellite Maneuver Classification and Orbital Pattern Anomaly Detection Via Supervised Machine Learning written by Thomas González Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the nature of the geosynchronous (GEO) orbital regime, where space objects orbit the Earth once per sidereal day, GEO satellites can appear fixed to a position in the sky when observed from the Earth's surface. This unique orbital characteristic makes GEO satellites ideal for telecommunications missions that require Earth-fixed antennas to send and receive signals, such as television broadcasts or military communications. To maintain their position relative to the Earth's surface, GEO satellites must station-keep, or regularly expend onboard propellant to counteract the natural forces in the near-Earth space environment that perturb their orbital trajectories. Less frequently, GEO satellites perform maneuvers to alter their orbital characteristics more drastically. One such maneuver is a longitudinal shift: changing a GEO satellite's sub-satellite point from one position on the Earth's equator to another. Such a maneuver often requires both a series of impulsive thrusts and a period of natural drift. This work describes an approach for detecting the components of longitudinal shift maneuvers-including the patterns associated with initiating and ending eastward and westward drifts-using convolutional neural networks trained on publicly available two-line element (TLE) data from the U.S. Space Command's (SPACECOM) space object catalog. A method for converting TLE data to geographic position histories-longitude, latitude, and altitude positions over time in the Earth-centered, Earth-fixed geographic reference frame-and labeling longitudinal shift maneuvers by inspection is described. A preliminary maneuver detection algorithm is designed, trained, and tested on all GEO satellites in orbit from January 1 to December 31, 2020. Performance metrics are presented for algorithms trained on two different training data sets corresponding to five and ten years' worth of geographic position time-histories labeled with longitudinal shift maneuvers. When detected, longitudinal shift maneuvers can be used to identify anomalous behavior in GEO. In this work, a satellite's behavior is considered nominal if it adheres to the satellite's pattern of life (PoL)-its previous on-orbit behavior made up of sequences of both natural and non-natural behavioral modes, including routine station-keeping, other on-orbit maneuvers, and uncontrolled motion-and anomalous if it deviates from the satellite's PoL. Identifying anomalous satellite behavior is of critical interest to space situational awareness (SSA) system operators, who may choose to task their sensors to obtain more observations of anomalous behavior, and satellite operators themselves, who may wish to diagnose its root cause. Applications of this work for international space policymaking, including the development of on-orbit norms of behavior and the distribution of spectral and physical space in GEO, is also discussed.

Book Tracking Target Objects Orbiting Earth Using Satellite based Telescopes

Download or read book Tracking Target Objects Orbiting Earth Using Satellite based Telescopes written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A system for tracking objects that are in earth orbit via a constellation or network of satellites having imaging devices is provided. An object tracking system includes a ground controller and, for each satellite in the constellation, an onboard controller. The ground controller receives ephemeris information for a target object and directs that ephemeris information be transmitted to the satellites. Each onboard controller receives ephemeris information for a target object, collects images of the target object based on the expected location of the target object at an expected time, identifies actual locations of the target object from the collected images, and identifies a next expected location at a next expected time based on the identified actual locations of the target object. The onboard controller processes the collected image to identify the actual location of the target object and transmits the actual location information to the ground controller.
