Book Adaptation to Coastal Storms in Atlantic Canada

Download or read book Adaptation to Coastal Storms in Atlantic Canada written by Liette Vasseur and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief is based on an analysis that was performed on the 2010 winter storms that caused considerable damage to coastal communities in Atlantic Canada. The hazards that occurred were associated with storm surge, high waves, coastal erosion, and flooding. The analysis covered a large multisite longitudinal project, where a participatory action research (PAR) approach was used to understand how people in 10 coastal communities perceive and experience extreme weather events and to enhance their capacity to adapt and improve their resilience. This brief exposes the outcome of two series of interviews and activities that were conducted during the project, as well as the lessons learned, and general elements that should be considered when researchers collaborate with communities to define adaptation and resilience strategies. It makes an important contribution to the application of PAR as an integrated (social-ecological) approach to resilience and how such an approach can be adapted also to other communities.

Book Econometric Evaluation of Large Weather Events Due to Climate Change

Download or read book Econometric Evaluation of Large Weather Events Due to Climate Change written by Stanislav Hetalo and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the 5th Annual Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), climate change will increase the frequency of large weather events such as floods, storm surges, cyclones, hurricanes, high speed winds, thunderstorms, snowstorms, blizzards, extreme temperatures and others. All these events lead to a significant economic damage to property, infrastructure and human health. Historically Atlantic Canada has been vulnerable to flooding. Destructive consequences of the flooding have been seen in the past and are expected to occur in the future specifically as a result of ongoing climate change. The ultimate goal of this study is to establish a relationship between socio-economic, climate change as well as direct flood factors and economic loss from floods in Atlantic Canada. As the first step in reaching this goal, the present study evaluates probability of floods in Atlantic Canada due to hydrological as well as climatological factors first and then tests the hypothesis of an increasing frequency of floods in the future due to climate change. Comprehensive statistical analysis performed in this study is based on the data collected from Canadian Disaster Database, Database of Environmental Departments and Local Governments of Maritime Provinces of Canada and Statistics Canada.

Book Near Real time Coastal Flood Mapping

Download or read book Near Real time Coastal Flood Mapping written by Mark K. Wang and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas Gulf Coast region contains significant centers of population, infrastructure, and economy, and is threatened by intensifying tropical cyclones. The resultant coastal flooding from cyclones such as Harvey and other extreme weather events often has multiple compounding drivers. This presents a complex numerical problem where a simulation must consider multiple hydrologic forcings. While there are several procedures for tacking this problem numerically, they tend to be resource-intensive and cannot be conducted in near real-time. We extend GeoFlood, a reduced physics conceptual framework for riverine flood forecasting, to rapidly predict storm surge and compound riverine-storm surge inundation. By modifying the Height Above Nearest Drainage (HAND) method for coastal environments we can map storm surge inundation on a 2.2 GB Digital Elevation Model (several counties at 10m x 10m resolution) in under 30 seconds on a personal computer with 64 GB of RAM. This method is validated against a numerical ocean circulation model (ADCIRC) simulation of Hurricane Ike, a major storm surge event on the Texas Gulf Coast. Despite the ADCIRC simulation's numerical solution and its consideration of weather forcings, the inundation map generated by the coastal HAND method is shown to have reasonable agreement at a fraction of the computation time. While our new model correctly predicts 99% of ADCIRC's inundated DEM cells, it also overpredicts inundated area by a factor of about 27%. We then combine this coastal HAND method with the classic GeoFlood framework for riverine flood forecasting to create a compound fluvial-storm surge inundation mapping workflow capable of being run in near real-time. This new coastal HAND method's fast wall-clock time and low CPU requirements can support decision making by first response personnel. The method provides timely and convenient access to crucial and high-resolution information such as the locations of flooded roads and buildings

Book The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate

Download or read book The Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate written by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-30 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for assessing the science related to climate change. It provides policymakers with regular assessments of the scientific basis of human-induced climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation. This IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate is the most comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the observed and projected changes to the ocean and cryosphere and their associated impacts and risks, with a focus on resilience, risk management response options, and adaptation measures, considering both their potential and limitations. It brings together knowledge on physical and biogeochemical changes, the interplay with ecosystem changes, and the implications for human communities. It serves policymakers, decision makers, stakeholders, and all interested parties with unbiased, up-to-date, policy-relevant information. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
