Book excerpt: One of BookRiot's Best Upcoming Cozy Mysteries for the Second Half of 2021! When murder follows Mimi Lee to her romantic island getaway, she puts on her best sleuthing hat with her sassy cat in tow in this adventurous cozy mystery by Jennifer J. Chow. Mimi Lee just found an extra perk to being a pet groomer at Hollywoof (other than cuddling animals all day long, that is). Pixie St. James, one of Mimi’s clients and the investor behind Hollywoof, has offered her and her boyfriend, Josh, a getaway at her vacation home, nestled on beautiful Catalina Island. With the island just outside of Los Angeles but still far enough from the hustle and bustle, Mimi, Josh, and their cat Marshmallow (who, of course, wouldn’t be caught dead in a dingy pet hotel) are excited for their relaxing stay. That is, until Pixie’s last renter, Davis D. Argo, turns up dead. Mimi and Josh’s romantic getaway immediately turns into an enormous buzzkill, especially when Pixie asks Mimi for help. The police suspect Pixie, and Mimi knows a thing or two about wrongful allegations. Mimi figures it couldn’t hurt to snoop a little since she’s already there, and soon discovers that a valuable item is missing. Except Pixie isn’t the only one in the neighborhood who has been robbed. There is something strange happening on the island, and Mimi won’t stop until she finds out what it is.

Book excerpt: Whenever middle-aged desert tour guide Forrest Bryant Johnson went out on his daily walks into the Mojave, all was usually peaceful and serene. But one beautiful summer day in 1987, Forrest heard a cry of distress. Following the cries, he came upon a small bobcat kitten, injured, orphaned, and desperately in need of help. So Forrest took his new feline friend home for a night. But when the little “trooper” clearly needed some more time to recoup, that night turned into two nights, a week, and eventually nineteen years. And so Trooper became a part of the Johnson family. And in those nineteen years, Trooper lived his nine lives to the fullest. He explored desert flora and fauna around him, befriending kit foxes, jackrabbits, desert tortoises, and other creatures and getting into mischief along the way. Trooper became a “big brother” to stray tabby Little Brother, teaching, guiding, and protecting Brother on the pair’s adventures and misadventures. He became a beloved patient at his local vet, and cherished housemate of Forrest’s wife, Chi. And Trooper even managed to melt the icy heart of a tough guy neighbor. But most of all, throughout his nineteen years, Trooper became Forrest’s best friend, as the two shared each other’s worries and frustrations, musings and rants, joys and laughter. Harrowing and heartfelt, Trooper: The Bobcat Who Came in from the Wild is for any reader who ever had their heart stolen by their pet.

Download or read book Real Wolfmen written by Linda S. Godfrey and published by TarcherPerigee. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s hiding in the woods? Here is the definitive account of today’s nationwide sightings of upright, canine creatures – which resemble traditional werewolves – and a thorough exploration of the nature and possible origins of the mysterious beast. “She has the ability to send chills up and down your spine.” —Brad Steiger, author of Real Ghosts, Restless Spirits, and Haunted Places “If you thought the likes of The Wolfman, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and Underworld had no basis in fact, it's time to think again!” —Nick Redfern, author of There's Something in the Woods “Real Wolfmen is a riveting work of amazing scope and depth. You’ll be hooked from the first page.”--Rosemary Ellen Guiley, author of The Encyclopedia of Vampires and Werewolves The U.S. has been invaded – if many dozens of eyewitnesses are to be believed – by upright, canine creatures that look like traditional werewolves and act as if they own our woods, fields, and highways. Sightings from coast to coast dating back to the 1930s compel us to ask exactly what these beasts are, and what they want. Researcher, author and newspaper reporter Linda S. Godfrey has been tracking the manwolf since the early 1990. In Real Wolfmen she presents the only large-scale cataloguing and investigation of reports of modern sightings of anomalous, upright canids. First-person accounts from Godfrey’s witnesses – who have encountered these creatures everywhere from outside their car windows to face-to-face on a late night stroll – describe the same human-sized canines: They are able to walk upright and hold food in their paws, interact fearlessly with humans, and suddenly and mysteriously disappear. Godfrey explores the most compelling cases from the modern history of such sightings, along with the latest reports, and undertakes a thorough exploration of the nature and possible origins of the creature.

Book Poached

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rachel Love Nuwer
  • Publisher : Hachette UK
  • Release : 2018-09-25
  • ISBN : 0306825511
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book Poached written by Rachel Love Nuwer and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intrepid investigation of the criminal world of wildlife trafficking--the poachers, the traders, and the customers--and of those fighting against it Journalist Rachel Nuwer plunges the reader into the underground of global wildlife trafficking, a topic she has been investigating for nearly a decade. Our insatiable demand for animals -- for jewelry, pets, medicine, meat, trophies, and fur -- is driving a worldwide poaching epidemic, threatening the continued existence of countless species. Illegal wildlife trade now ranks among the largest contraband industries in the world, yet compared to drug, arms, or human trafficking, the wildlife crisis has received scant attention and support, leaving it up to passionate individuals fighting on the ground to try to ensure that elephants, tigers, rhinos, and more are still around for future generations. As Reefer Madness (Schlosser) took us into the drug market, or Susan Orlean descended into the swampy obsessions of TheOrchid Thief, Nuwer--an award-winning science journalist with a background in ecology--takes readers on a narrative journey to the front lines of the trade: to killing fields in Africa, traditional medicine black markets in China, and wild meat restaurants in Vietnam. Through exhaustive first-hand reporting that took her to ten countries, Nuwer explores the forces currently driving demand for animals and their parts; the toll that demand is extracting on species across the planet; and the conservationists, rangers, and activists who believe it is not too late to stop the impending extinctions. More than a depressing list of statistics, Poached is the story of the people who believe this is a battle that can be won, that our animals are not beyond salvation.

When Beth first met Yoda at the animal shelter, he was skinny and his fur was matted. He hid in the back of his cage and wanted nothing to do with anyone. But Beth chose Yoda. She took him home, cleaned him up, and gave him love. Beth fosters kittens, too, and before long Yoda discovered them—and his life purpose. Now he’s happy, and fluffy, and very, very busy. He makes sure the orphan kittens eat, he keeps them safe, and he even cleans up after them. Yoda acts like a father and mother to the foster kittens that fill his home, and taking care of others has helped him too: even though Yoda has a serious heart condition, he’s made a miraculous turnaround, and is healthier than doctors thought he could be. To further the important work that Beth does on behalf of animals, all of her proceeds from this book will be donated to North Shore Animal League America’s Bianca’s Furry Friends campaign.

Book Zeus The Pirate Tiger

    Book Details:
  • Author : Big Cat Big Cat Rescue
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2018-09-18
  • ISBN : 9781727468960
  • Pages : 62 pages

Download or read book Zeus The Pirate Tiger written by Big Cat Big Cat Rescue and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zeus. What a powerful name for a powerful cat. Just his name invokes a bit of fear and commands respect. But our Zeus was not a cat who demanded respect; he was our gentle giant. He was the chuffiest tiger at Big Cat Rescue. He loved to chuff to his caretakers and greet them. Sometimes the chuffs were a sense of reassurance for a massive cat who could barely see. Through human greed, his abuse and neglect via the 'pay to play' scheme, camera flashes destroyed his eyesight while he should have still been with his mama nursing, getting the delicate balance of nutrients his tiny body needed, yet was denied. When he became too big to safely handle, he was speed bred with his mother to create white tigers. Born September 1, 1996, he was 3 months younger than my youngest son. I felt a kinship with that. His liberation to Big Cat Rescue on May 28, 2014 was a huge day for him. He was with his daughter/sister Keisha for some time, until it became clear that her rambunctiousness was too much for a cat who couldn't see well, and they were separated, but still near each other. Then he was moved farther away from Keisha to an area near Joseph Lion, in complete shade where it was more 'soothing' for our gentle giant. He ended up having to have his luxated lens removed because it was bulging, and then he affectionately became our "Pirate Zeus". Zeus told us it was time to go and on June 5, 2018 it was clear. No more Zeus parties; no more cheering for the only cat that liked clapping and cheering to get his food/treats. Three months shy of being 22. His last 4 years saw unconditional love, affection, respect and devotion by a group of Angels on Earth who didn't look after him for money - they don't get paid - but rather for a sense of desire to help those who didn't ask for their previous existence prior to their arrival at Big Cat Rescue. Zeus. No more chuffs. I miss you, big boy! Forever loved!! Forever FREE!!
