Book Real Soldiers Don t Cry

Download or read book Real Soldiers Don t Cry written by Ryan Leigh Dostie and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book length creative thesis is a non-fiction work describing the author’s personal experiences in the U.S. Army, including fifteen months in Iraq from 2003-2004. The thesis deals with such topics as combat, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Military Sexual Trauma. The author delves extensively into the themes of gender relations in the military: the difficulties female soldiers face while in uniform, instances of sexual harassment/assault/rape, and military reactions to sexual crimes. The memoir unfolds predominantly in chronological order, with some instances of theme-related vignettes in-between the narrative. The author, a combat veteran and a military rape survivor, details both experiences, as well as living with trauma and its effects on the individual psyche. The intention of this creative non-Fiction thesis is to be more than a simple story—the author attempts to use all her craft skills in order to create an engaging, vivid, honest, and memorable piece of literature. As a memoir, it is written in first person and often in present tense. Present tense was chosen to highlight how the author continues to live in these moments and how trauma often keeps an individual trapped in the past, instead of allowing them to move forward.

Book excerpt: The loneliness and isolation we find ourselves in can be overwhelming and debilitating, it's not something we can stoic away in staged instagram pictures and moody soundbites. Creating a new tribe, network and emotional fabric to rely on was incredibly hard but also vital. The people who can make up your circle are there, just be open to who it is.⠀If you can do that, if you can take that step, get past the outrageously toxic veteran community and look at who actually helped when it mattered - they're your people. They're your real brothers and sisters, not the fake 'we're here for you' wankers on social media who won't help beyond a hashtag.⠀ Your circle is out there, waiting for you.⠀ I think these books have been that journey, are still that journey - whether I realised that when I started them or not. I have no idea where the original idea came from to have 3 books in a series, I'd love to say there was some grand over-arching plan but that would be a lie. It was New Years day 2019 when I announced to no one in particular that I was going to curate a book by veterans to help veterans. I wasn't really thinking much past the first book, then somehow this has all morphed into a series of 3. In my mind I knew the book shouldn't be read in a linear way, you don't need to start at the beginning, which became none of the books need to be read in any order or on any particular page. You should be able to pick them up and read whatever and wherever you happen to land on, and take from that what you can - which is hopefully 'something'. Is the last Veteran Collective book? Never say never, it's certainly the last in this 'series' lets say. 3 books out there which are hopefully doing the rounds helping someone, somewhere, somehow is more than I could have ever imagined. There's plenty of other people now getting their story out there, and the more that do can only be a good thing. No one is coming, it's up to us. Maybe that's what it's always been about, never alone. Nunquam Solus

Book excerpt: The astonishing, powerful debut by the winner of a 2016 Whiting Writers' Award WHEREAS her birth signaled the responsibility as mother to teach what it is to be Lakota therein the question: What did I know about being Lakota? Signaled panic, blood rush my embarrassment. What did I know of our language but pieces? Would I teach her to be pieces? Until a friend comforted, Don’t worry, you and your daughter will learn together. Today she stood sunlight on her shoulders lean and straight to share a song in Diné, her father’s language. To sing she motions simultaneously with her hands; I watch her be in multiple musics. —from “WHEREAS Statements” WHEREAS confronts the coercive language of the United States government in its responses, treaties, and apologies to Native American peoples and tribes, and reflects that language in its officiousness and duplicity back on its perpetrators. Through a virtuosic array of short lyrics, prose poems, longer narrative sequences, resolutions, and disclaimers, Layli Long Soldier has created a brilliantly innovative text to examine histories, landscapes, her own writing, and her predicament inside national affiliations. “I am,” she writes, “a citizen of the United States and an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, meaning I am a citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation—and in this dual citizenship I must work, I must eat, I must art, I must mother, I must friend, I must listen, I must observe, constantly I must live.” This strident, plaintive book introduces a major new voice in contemporary literature.

Book Using Computers in the Translation of Literary Style

Download or read book Using Computers in the Translation of Literary Style written by Roy Youdale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume argues for an innovative interdisciplinary approach to the analysis and translation of literary style, based on a mutually supportive combination of traditional close reading and ‘distant’ reading, involving corpus-linguistic analysis and text-visualisation. The book contextualizes this approach within the broader story of the development of computer-assisted translation -- including machine translation and the use of CAT tools -- and elucidates the ways in which the approach can lead to better informed translations than those based on close reading alone. This study represents the first systematic attempt to use corpus linguistics and text-visualisation in the process of translating individual literary texts, as opposed to comparing and analysing already published originals and their translations. Using the case study of his translation into English of Uruguayan author Mario Benedetti’s 1965 novel Gracías por el Fuego, Youdale showcases how a close and distant reading approach (CDR) enhances the translator’s ability to detect and measure a variety of stylistic features, ranging from sentence length and structure to lexical richness and repetition, both in the source text and in their own draft translation, thus assisting them with the task of revision. The book reflects on the benefits and limitations of a CDR approach, its scalability and broader applicability in translation studies and related disciplines, making this key reading for translators, postgraduate students and scholars in the fields of literary translation, corpus linguistics, corpus stylistics and narratology.

Book Warriors Don t Cry

Download or read book Warriors Don t Cry written by Melba Pattillo Beals and published by Tantor eBooks. This book was released on 2011-10-03 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, brought the promise of integration to Little Rock, Arkansas, but it was hard-won for the nine black teenagers chosen to integrate Central High School in 1957. They ran a gauntlet flanked by a rampaging mob and a heavily armed Arkansas National Guard—opposition so intense that soldiers from the elite 101st Airborne Division were called in to restore order. For Melba Beals and her eight friends those steps marked their transformation into reluctant warriors—on a battlefield that helped shape the civil rights movement. Warriors Don't Cry, drawn from Melba Beals's personal diaries, is a riveting true account of her junior year at Central High—one filled with telephone threats, brigades of attacking mothers, rogue police, fireball and acid-throwing attacks, economic blackmail, and, finally, a price upon Melba's head. With the help of her English-teacher mother; her eight fellow warriors; and her gun-toting, Bible-and-Shakespeare-loving grandmother, Melba survived. And, incredibly, from a year that would hold no sweet-sixteen parties or school plays, Melba Beals emerged with indestructible faith, courage, strength, and hope.

Book excerpt: Crying is a typical human expression of emotion. Surprisingly, until now little scientific attention has been devoted to this phenomenon. Many textbooks on emotion fail to pay attention to it, and in scientific journals there are hardly any contributions focusing on this behavior. In contrast, there is much interest from the lay public, allowing pseudo-scientists to formulate theories that have little or no scientific basis. Is there any evidence in support of statements that crying is healthy or that not crying may result in toxification? How do people react to the crying of others? Is crying important for the diagnosis of depression, and if so, how? This book aims to fill this gap in scientific literature. Crying is discussed from several perspectives and specific attention is given to methodological issues and assessment. Each chapter provides a review and a summary of the relevant scientific literature.
