Download or read book Real Choices new Voices written by Douglas J. Amy and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing realization that many of the problems afflicting American elections can be traced to the electoral system itself, in particular to our winner-take-all approach to electing officials. Douglas Amy demonstrates that switching to proportional representation elections-the voting system used in most other Western democracies, by which officials are elected in large, multimember districts according to the proportion of the vote won by their parties-would enliven democratic political debate, increase voter choice and voter turnout, ensure fair representation for third parties and minorities, eliminate wasted votes and "spoliers," and ultimately produce policies that better reflect the public will. Looking beyond new voting machines and other quick fixes for our electoral predicament, this new edition of Real Choices/New Voices offers a timely and imaginative way out of the frustrations of our current system of choosing leaders.

Download or read book California and the Melancholic American Identity in Joan Didion s Novels written by Katarzyna Nowak McNeice and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California and the Melancholic American Identity in Joan Didion’s Novels: Exiled from Eden focuses on the concept of Californian identity in the fiction of Joan Didion. This identity is understood as melancholic, in the sense that the critics following the tradition of both Sigmund Freud and Walter Benjamin use the word. The book traces the progress of the way Californian identity is portrayed in Joan Didion’s novels, starting with the first two in which California plays the central role, Run River and Play It As It Lays, through A Book of Common Prayer to Democracy and The Last Thing He Wanted, where California functions only as a distant point of reference, receding to the background of Didion’s interests. Curiously enough, Didion presents Californian history as a history of white settlement, disregarding whole chapters of the history of the region in which the Californios and Native Americans, among other groups, played a crucial role: it is this reticence that the monograph sees as the main problem of Didion’s fiction and presents it as the silent center of gravity in Didion’s oeuvre. The monograph proposes to see the melancholy expressed by Didion’s fiction organized into four losses: of Nature, History, Ethics, and Language; around which the main analytical chapters are constructed. What remains unrepresented and silenced comes back to haunt Didion’s fiction, and it results in a melancholic portrayal of California and its identity – which is the central theme this monograph addresses.

Download or read book The Gabriel Letters written by Richard V. Shriver and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I stumbled on the idea of writing letters from an archangel advising a young guardian, in an introduction to C. S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters. I wanted to find a way of looking at our human problems from a divine perspective. It has been a marvelous experience of standing back and imagining that I can see the world through angel eyes. It is an impossible task, of course, but the amazing result for me has been a sense of objectivity and good will. The intended purpose of the letters is to take seriously the idea of God's complete love. This idea is the center of Christianity. It is Jesus' message, and it is St. Paul's "good news." We live in an age when institutions of religion are taking a beating from the media, from popular fiction in books and cinema, from those who proclaim cheap or distorted theology, and from our obsessive desire for wealth, power, and material things. The idea of an ideal church is still our hope: a community of people gathered out of a love of God and a concern for each other, to serve their community and their world. These letters offer advice in creating such an ideal church.
Download or read book Derivative Lives written by Virginia Newhall Rademacher and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book, Derivative Lives, alludes to the challenge of finding one's way within the contemporary market of virtually limitless information and claims to veracity. Amid this profusion of options, it is easy to feel lost in spaces of uncertainty where biographical truth teeters between the real and the imaginative. The title thus also points to the prolific market of biographical novels that openly and intentionally play in the speculative space between the real and the fictional. Drawing on theories of risk and uncertainty, Derivative Lives considers the surge in biofiction in Spain and globally, relating literary expression to concepts such as circumstantiality, derivatives, speculation, and game studies.
