Book excerpt: Based on courses given at Eötvös Loránd University (Hungary) over the past 30 years, this introductory textbook develops the central concepts of the analysis of functions of one variable — systematically, with many examples and illustrations, and in a manner that builds upon, and sharpens, the student’s mathematical intuition. The book provides a solid grounding in the basics of logic and proofs, sets, and real numbers, in preparation for a study of the main topics: limits, continuity, rational functions and transcendental functions, differentiation, and integration. Numerous applications to other areas of mathematics, and to physics, are given, thereby demonstrating the practical scope and power of the theoretical concepts treated. In the spirit of learning-by-doing, Real Analysis includes more than 500 engaging exercises for the student keen on mastering the basics of analysis. The wealth of material, and modular organization, of the book make it adaptable as a textbook for courses of various levels; the hints and solutions provided for the more challenging exercises make it ideal for independent study.

Book A Second Course on Real Functions

Download or read book A Second Course on Real Functions written by A. C. M. van Rooij and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1982-03-25 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When considering a mathematical theorem one ought not only to know how to prove it but also why and whether any given conditions are necessary. All too often little attention is paid to to this side of the theory and in writing this account of the theory of real functions the authors hope to rectify matters. They have put the classical theory of real functions in a modern setting and in so doing have made the mathematical reasoning rigorous and explored the theory in much greater depth than is customary. The subject matter is essentially the same as that of ordinary calculus course and the techniques used are elementary (no topology, measure theory or functional analysis). Thus anyone who is acquainted with elementary calculus and wishes to deepen their knowledge should read this.

Book Introduction to the Theory of Algebraic Functions of One Variable

Download or read book Introduction to the Theory of Algebraic Functions of One Variable written by Claude Chevalley and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1951-12-31 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents an approach to algebraic geometry of curves that is treated as the theory of algebraic functions on the curve. This book discusses such topics as the theory of divisors on a curve, the Riemann-Roch theorem, $p$-adic completion, and extensions of the fields of functions (covering theory) and of the fields of constants.

Book Theory of Approximation of Functions of a Real Variable

Download or read book Theory of Approximation of Functions of a Real Variable written by A. F. Timan and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Approximation of Functions of a Real Variable discusses a number of fundamental parts of the modern theory of approximation of functions of a real variable. The material is grouped around the problem of the connection between the best approximation of functions to their structural properties. This text is composed of eight chapters that highlight the relationship between the various structural properties of real functions and the character of possible approximations to them by polynomials and other functions of simple construction. Each chapter concludes with a section containing various problems and theorems, which supplement the main text. The first chapters tackle the Weierstrass's theorem, the best approximation by polynomials on a finite segment, and some compact classes of functions and their structural properties. The subsequent chapters describe some properties of algebraic polynomials and transcendental integral functions of exponential type, as well as the direct theorems of the constructive theory of functions. These topics are followed by discussions of differential and constructive characteristics of converse theorems. The final chapters explore other theorems connecting the best approximations functions with their structural properties. These chapters also deal with the linear processes of approximation of functions by polynomials. The book is intended for post-graduate students and for mathematical students taking advanced courses, as well as to workers in the field of the theory of functions.

Book Scenes from the History of Real Functions

Download or read book Scenes from the History of Real Functions written by F.A. Medvedev and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To attempt to compile a relatively complete bibliography of the theory of functions of a real variable with the requisite bibliographical data, to enumer ate the names of the mathematicians who have studied this subject, exhibit their fundamental results, and also include the most essential biographical data about them, to conduct an inventory of the concepts and methods that have been and continue to be applied in the theory of functions of a real variable ... in short, to carry out anyone of these projects with appropriate completeness would require a separate book involving a corresponding amount of work. For that reason the word essays occurs in the title of the present work, allowing some freedom in the selection of material. In justification of this selection, it is reasonable to try to characterize to some degree the subject to whose history these essays are devoted. The truth of the matter is that this is a hopeless enterprise if one requires such a characterization to be exhaustively complete and concise. No living subject can be given a final definition without provoking some objections, usually serious ones. But if we make no such claims, a characterization is possible; and if the first essay of the present book appears unconvincing to anyone, the reason is the personal fault of the author, and not the objective necessity of the attempt.

Book Several Real Variables

Download or read book Several Real Variables written by Shmuel Kantorovitz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This undergraduate textbook is based on lectures given by the author on the differential and integral calculus of functions of several real variables. The book has a modern approach and includes topics such as: •The p-norms on vector space and their equivalence •The Weierstrass and Stone-Weierstrass approximation theorems •The differential as a linear functional; Jacobians, Hessians, and Taylor's theorem in several variables •The Implicit Function Theorem for a system of equations, proved via Banach’s Fixed Point Theorem •Applications to Ordinary Differential Equations •Line integrals and an introduction to surface integrals This book features numerous examples, detailed proofs, as well as exercises at the end of sections. Many of the exercises have detailed solutions, making the book suitable for self-study. Several Real Variables will be useful for undergraduate students in mathematics who have completed first courses in linear algebra and analysis of one real variable.

Book excerpt: Basic Analysis I: Functions of a Real Variable is designed for students who have completed the usual calculus and ordinary differential equation sequence and a basic course in linear algebra. This is a critical course in the use of abstraction, but is just first volume in a sequence of courses which prepare students to become practicing scientists. This book is written with the aim of balancing the theory and abstraction with clear explanations and arguments, so that students who are from a variety of different areas can follow this text and use it profitably for self-study. It can also be used as a supplementary text for anyone whose work requires that they begin to assimilate more abstract mathematical concepts as part of their professional growth. Features Can be used as a traditional textbook as well as for self-study Suitable for undergraduate mathematics students, or for those in other disciplines requiring a solid grounding in abstraction Emphasises learning how to understand the consequences of assumptions using a variety of tools to provide the proofs of propositions
