Book Real Exchange Rate Adjustment and the Welfare Effects of Oil Price Decontrol

Download or read book Real Exchange Rate Adjustment and the Welfare Effects of Oil Price Decontrol written by Paul R. Krugman and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional analysis of the welfare effects of U.S. oil price regulation in the 1970's focuses on the deadweight losses in the oil market. This paper argues that such analysis substantially understates the benefits from decontrolling prices, because decontrol will lead to an improvement in the U.S. terms of trade with respect to other oil importing countries. A simple model of the relationship between oil decontrol and the terms of trade is developed, and the impact is calculated for plausible parameter values. The results suggest that the terms of trade benefits are several times larger than the benefits as conventionally measured

Book Oil Windfalls

Download or read book Oil Windfalls written by Alan H. Gelb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the full impact of oil windfalls on six developing producer countries - Algeria, Ecuador, Indonesia, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. This is the first time that the issue has been systematically analysed and related to economics policies and underlying macroeconomic characteristics. The book adopts a broad approach, blending institutional and political aspects with quantitative analysis which includes the results of sophisticated model simulations. It presents new information on how oil discoveries have been used by producer governments, and analyses of the consequences. Finally it concludes that much of the potential benefit to producers has been dissipated, and explains why producers may actually end up worse off despite revenue gains.

Book The Energy Illusion and Economic Stability

Download or read book The Energy Illusion and Economic Stability written by Hui-Liang Tsai and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989-07-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of a massive study by the author of the effects of energy and energy shocks on the world economy, the volume is organized around the theme that energy is an integral feature of the economy and that any interpretation of short-term movements in economic activity is likely to be seriously at fault if it neglects energy supply changes and their repercussions. The author takes both an historical and theoretical approach to the subject, providing students and scholars of energy economics and political economy with a logical framework within which key worldwide energy issues and problems can be analyzed.

Book On Non uniqueness in Rational Expectations Models

Download or read book On Non uniqueness in Rational Expectations Models written by Bennett T. McCallum and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many macroeconomic models involving rational expect at ions give rise to an infinity of solution paths, even when the models are linear in all variables. Some writers have suggested that this non-uniqueness constitutes a serious weakness for the rational expectations hypothesis. One purpose of the present paper is to argue that the non-uniqueness in question is not properly attributable to the rationality hypothesis but, instead, is a general feature of dynamic models involving expectations. It is also argued that there typically exists, in a very wide class of linear rational expectations models, a single solution that excludes "bubble" or "bootstrap" effects ones that occur only because they are arbitrarily expected to occur. A systematic procedure for obtaining solutions free from such effects is introduced and discussed. In addition, this procedure is used to interpret and reconsider several prominent examples with solution multiplicities, including ones developed by Fischer Black and John B. Taylor.
