Book The Real Space Cowboys

Download or read book The Real Space Cowboys written by Ed Buckbee and published by Burlington, Ont. : Apogee Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1959, seven U.S. military fighter pilots were selected to train as America's first astronauts. Alan Shepard, Gordon Cooper, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra and Deke Slayton would become known as the Mercury Seven (M7). These men, who had jockeyed for the best flying jobs in the military, began com-peting for rides on rockets. Most would eventually vie for the ultimate ride to the moon. The author Ed Buckbee, who has enjoyed a 40+ year association with the U.S. manned space flight program, follows these brave men who pioneered the U.S. space program. Through time and personal friend-ships, he captures dreams of flying higher, faster and farther than any-one in the known universe. Readers are invited behind the scenes to witness the competition between chimpanzees and astronauts, and the conflict between NASA engineers designing capsules and those who would pilot them. Through this book, readers feel the collective will of a nation to defeat the Russians in an all-out space race via an American team of 400,000 engineers, technicians, astronauts and sup-port personnel who performed as if the country were at war. The eras of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo-- these were times of nobility and humility, but also times of arrogance, tension, and from time-to--time, humour. "Gotcha's" were commonplace astronaut pranks and a dubious answer to the question, "Are you a turtle?" resulted in a healthy bar tab. But what of our first space heroes after the Apollo program was com-pleted? Accepting the call of Project Mercury meant a lifetime com-mitment. Their work continued with motivational programs for youth through the U.S. Space Camp programs, public programs at institu-tions such as the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, and oth-ers. The author himself shared the task of motivating the next generation through creation of U.S. Space Camp and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Bonus DVD-10 with rare film footage: 1976 Interview with Wernher von Braun; 30th Anniversary Documentary on Skylab; "Gotcha" film about Alan Shepard; Space Camp Documentary - Reach For The Stars; 1997 Panel Discussion at Pensacola with Armstrong, Shepard, Lovell, Aldrin & Cernan; 2002 Panel Discussion at Pensacola with the Mercury Astronauts; "Gotcha" Documentary - The Lighthouse Never Fails; U.S. Space & Rocket Center Documentary - From the Valley to the Moon; Documentary - The Flight of Freedom 7; Mercury Astronauts Documentary - The First; "Gotcha" film of Apollo 12.

Book The Real Cowboys Aliens

Download or read book The Real Cowboys Aliens written by Noe Torres and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the turbulent times of the "Wild West," America's farmers, ranchers, and cowboys looked up into the sky and beheld "signs and wonders" that rival any UFO sighting of the modern era. In addition to the airships above them, on the ground below they encountered strange humanoids in possession of futuristic technology, glimpsed unidentified submersible objects in the water, and dug up alien artifacts from the earth. This book doesn't just cover typical airship encounters of the era. It also details sightings of Men in Black, a Reptilian in 1892, and what sound to be underwater dwelling aliens in Pyramid Lake, Nevada! After reading this book you'll ask yourself: Was a UFO sighted in Pascagoula, Mississippi, in 1874 related to another sighting there a hundred years later? Were strange lights floating along the train tracks in Edwardsville, Kansas, in 1878 those of a UFO or a Phantom Locomotive? Was an alien spotted in 1880 Kentucky the same specter named Spring-Heeled Jack that terrorized London in the 1830s? And, did a giant sword that fell to earth in New York State in 1883 come from the heavens or another dimension altogether?

Book The Real Cowboys Aliens

Download or read book The Real Cowboys Aliens written by John LeMay and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you first saw this book, you probably assumed it was fiction, right? Wrong! As it turns out, America's Old West cowboys did encounter UFOs and also creatures that they believed were “aliens." This happened not in comic books and films but in real life. In this book, you will read actual eyewitness accounts describing strange objects seen in the skies, and, in some cases, the even stranger occupants of those UFOs! Did you know that many years before the reported crash of a UFO near Roswell New Mexico, another weird object fell out of the sky in Aurora, Texas, in 1897? The citizens of Aurora said the dead pilot was “not of this world,” and they buried him in the local cemetery, where he may still remain today. You will also learn about the flying alien monster of Crawfordsville, Indiana; the “underwater UFO” that electrocuted two men near Tacoma, Washington; a Bigfoot creature the local Native Americans said came to earth in a “small moon;” a UFO that exploded over a Texas cotton gin; and many other bizarre UFO encounters of the Old West!

Book The Compton Cowboys

Download or read book The Compton Cowboys written by Walter Thompson-Hernandez and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Thompson-Hernández's portrayal of Compton's black cowboys broadens our perception of Compton's young black residents, and connects the Compton Cowboys to the historical legacy of African Americans in the west. An eye-opening, moving book.”—Margot Lee Shetterly, New York Times bestselling author of Hidden Figures “Walter Thompson-Hernández has written a book for the ages: a profound and moving account of what it means to be black in America that is awe inspiring in its truth-telling and limitless in its empathy. Here is an American epic of black survival and creativity, of terrible misfortune and everyday resilience, of grace, redemption and, yes, cowboys.”— Junot Díaz, Pulitzer prize-winning author of This is How You Lose Her A rising New York Times reporter tells the compelling story of The Compton Cowboys, a group of African-American men and women who defy stereotypes and continue the proud, centuries-old tradition of black cowboys in the heart of one of America’s most notorious cities. In Compton, California, ten black riders on horseback cut an unusual profile, their cowboy hats tilted against the hot Los Angeles sun. They are the Compton Cowboys, their small ranch one of the very last in a formerly semirural area of the city that has been home to African-American horse riders for decades. To most people, Compton is known only as the home of rap greats NWA and Kendrick Lamar, hyped in the media for its seemingly intractable gang violence. But in 1988 Mayisha Akbar founded The Compton Jr. Posse to provide local youth with a safe alternative to the streets, one that connected them with the rich legacy of black cowboys in American culture. From Mayisha’s youth organization came the Cowboys of today: black men and women from Compton for whom the ranch and the horses provide camaraderie, respite from violence, healing from trauma, and recovery from incarceration. The Cowboys include Randy, Mayisha’s nephew, faced with the daunting task of remaking the Cowboys for a new generation; Anthony, former drug dealer and inmate, now a family man and mentor, Keiara, a single mother pursuing her dream of winning a national rodeo championship, and a tight clan of twentysomethings--Kenneth, Keenan, Charles, and Tre--for whom horses bring the freedom, protection, and status that often elude the young black men of Compton. The Compton Cowboys is a story about trauma and transformation, race and identity, compassion, and ultimately, belonging. Walter Thompson-Hernández paints a unique and unexpected portrait of this city, pushing back against stereotypes to reveal an urban community in all its complexity, tragedy, and triumph. The Compton Cowboys is illustrated with 10-15 photographs.

Book Cow Boys and Cattle Men

Download or read book Cow Boys and Cattle Men written by Jacqueline M. Moore and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowboys are an American legend, but despite ubiquity in history and popular culture, misperceptions abound. Technically, a cowboy worked with cattle, as a ranch hand, while his boss, the cattleman, owned the ranch. Jacqueline M. Moore casts aside romantic and one-dimensional images of cowboys by analyzing the class, gender, and labor histories of ranching in Texas during the second half of the nineteenth century. As working-class men, cowboys showed their masculinity through their skills at work as well as public displays in town. But what cowboys thought was manly behavior did not always match those ideas of the business-minded cattlemen, who largely absorbed middle-class masculine ideals of restraint. Real men, by these standards, had self-mastery over their impulses and didn’t fight, drink, gamble or consort with "unsavory" women. Moore explores how, in contrast to the mythic image, from the late 1870s on, as the Texas frontier became more settled and the open range disappeared, the real cowboys faced increasing demands from the people around them to rein in the very traits that Americans considered the most masculine. Published in Cooperation with the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies, Southern Methodist University.
