Excerpt: ... 12 So round his melancholy neck A rope he did entwine, And for the second time in life Enlisted in the Line! 13 One end he tied around a beam, And then removed his pegs, And, as his legs were off, of course He soon was off his legs. 14 And there he hung till he was dead As any nail in town; For, though distress had cut him up, It could not cut him down!--Thomas Hood. BURIAL OF SIR JOHN MOORE Sir John Moore, commanding the British forces in Spain in the war with Napoleon, was killed at the battle of Corunna, Spain, January 16, 1809. The battle occurred at the end of a long and hard retreat, and although the English had the advantage, they embarked at Corunna after the battle and returned to England. The French forces were under Marshal Soult. Alison's History of Europe says that Moore "was wrapped by his attendants in his military cloak and laid in a grave hastily formed on the ramparts of Corunna, where a monument was soon after erected over his uncoffined remains by the generosity of the French Marshal Ney. Not a word was spoken as the melancholy interment by torchlight took place; silently they laid him in his grave, while the distant cannon of the battlefield fired the funeral honors to his memory. "This tomb, originally erected by the French, since enlarged by the British, bears a simple but touching inscription, written of the hero over whose remains it is placed. Few spots in Europe will ever be more the object of general interest. His very misfortunes were the means which procured him immortal fame--his disastrous retreat, bloody death, and finally his tomb on a foreign strand, far from home and friends. There is scarcely a Spaniard but has heard of his tomb and speaks of it with a strange kind of awe." Many fantastic legends have...

Book Collection of Poetry for School Reading Classic Reprint

Download or read book Collection of Poetry for School Reading Classic Reprint written by Marcus White and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collection of Poetry for School Reading This collection of poems for school reading has been planned for children from ten to fifteen years of age. The compiler has long felt the need in his own schools of a book of modest size and price that should include the poems here brought together. They are for the most part old favorites, and they have proved themselves by actual test to be well fitted to give genuine pleasure to children, and, at the same time, to foster in them a growing appreciation of what is good in literature. The collection is by no means exhaustive, and is intended only to supplement the many admirable selections from English and American authors now prepared for school use. It is hoped, however, that this book may prove to be one which children will like to own for themselves, and that, instead of being read and then laid aside for something new, it may enjoy an intimate and enduring companionship with them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Read Poetry It may be plainly stated, in beginning, that this little book is in no sense a didactic or tech nical treatise, that it Sheers humbly far away from the academic or educational religion. d104books, conveying formal poetic informa tion, offering best and most incontrovertible of studious reasons for the why and how of poetry reading, are thicker than flowers in May or sad hearts in war time, but here is no hint of addition to their number. The best argument that can be advanced in favor of marriage is that marriage has been found happy. The best of all reasons for reading poetry is because one loves it. And the best way to read poetry is with the love that, for love's sake, finds its own path way, works its own miracles of sympathy and understanding. Book New Poems and Variant Readings Classic Reprint

Download or read book New Poems and Variant Readings Classic Reprint written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Poems and Variant Readings All Stevensonians owe a debt of gratitude to the Bibliophile Society of Boston for having discovered the following poems and given them light in a privately printed edition, thus making them known, in fact, to the world at large. Otherwise they would have remained scattered and hidden indefinitely in the hands of various collectors. They will be found extraordinarily interesting in their self-revelation, and some, indeed, are so intimate and personal that one understands why Stevenson withheld them from all eyes save his own. The love-poems in particular, though they are of very unequal merit, possess in common a really affecting sincerity. That Stevenson should have preserved these poems through all the vicissitudes of his wandering life shows how dearly he must have valued them; and shows, too, I think, beyond any contradiction, that he meant they should be ultimately published. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Poetry and Poets N the hope that a work undertaken Without the remotest View to publication, but for the com paratively ephemeral purpose of imparting oral in formation and entertainment, may prove permanently valuable, I commit to print the result of much delightful reading, with some loving and earnest (though far from scholarly) original criticism. In my eager and various reading I quoted and transposed - for the benefit of my classes in English Poetry - from many authors. It did not then seem necessary to retain in memory all the sources of my information; consequently I cannot now duly accredit some of my borrowings. In a work like this, such an Offence may, I trust, be forgiven. Where much learned and able work has been done by my betters, I have not hoped to excel; but if I may help to foster a love and appreciation of the good and true in English verse, I shall have attained to my highest end and ambition.
