Book The Political Economy of Tanzania

Download or read book The Political Economy of Tanzania written by Michael F. Lofchie and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since gaining independence, the United Republic of Tanzania has enjoyed relative stability. More recently, the nation transitioned peacefully from "single-party democracy" and socialism to a multiparty political system with a market-based economy. But Tanzania's development strategies—based on the leading economic ideas at the time of independence—also opened the door for unscrupulous dealmaking among political elites and led to economic decline in the 1960s and 1970s that continues to be felt today. Indeed, the shift to a market-oriented economy was motivated in part by the fiscal interests of government profiteers. The Political Economy of Tanzania focuses on the nation's economic development from 1961 to the present, considering the global and domestic factors that have shaped Tanzania's economic policies over time. Michael F. Lofchie presents a compelling analysis of the successes and failures of a country whose postcolonial history has been deeply influenced by high-ranking members of the political elite who have used their power to advance their own economic interests. The Political Economy of Tanzania offers crucial lessons for scholars and policy makers with a stake in Africa's future.

Book The Development State

Download or read book The Development State written by Maia Green and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely, ethnographically informed account of the "development state" of Tanzania, showing how development practice and culture have become integrated into everyday life, politically, socially and economically. How has development affected the practices of the state in Africa? How has the development state become the basis of social organisation? How do Tanzanians position themselves to obtain aid money to effect change in their personallives? Financial aid flows have entrenched an economy of intervention in which the main beneficiaries are those who can claim to undertake development activities. Even for those not formally engaged in the development sector, its discourses influence everyday discussion about class and inequality, poverty and wealth, modernity and tradition. With Tanzania as the country focus, the author shows how the practices of development have infiltrated not only the state at large but many aspects of people's everyday lives. Maia Green is Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester.

Book Sustaining and Sharing Economic Growth in Tanzania

Download or read book Sustaining and Sharing Economic Growth in Tanzania written by Robert J. Utz and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far reaching macro-economic and structural reforms combined with increases in government spending have been the primary drivers of Tanzania's growth acceleration. As growth in government spending slows, the locomotive for growth will need to shift to increased demand for exports and domestically produced goods, requiring Tanzania to strengthen substantially its international competitiveness, accelerate structural change, and safeguard the environment while maintaining macroeconomic stability. For Tanzania's poor to be able to participate and benefit from important growth, a greater focus on rural development, improved governance of the management of Tanzania's natural resources, and better targeting of social services to the poor is suggested. Successful design and implementation of a shared growth strategy will also require a strengthening of policy management and coordination in Tanzania to ensure that scarce human and financial resources are effectively deployed.

Book Sustaining and Sharing Economic Growth in Tanzania

Download or read book Sustaining and Sharing Economic Growth in Tanzania written by Robert J. Utz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to contribute to the government's thinking on how best to translate broad MKUKUTA (the government of Tanzania's National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty) policy objectives into practical tactics and programs well suited to Tanzania's economic priorities and to the removal of key institutional and infrastructure bottlenecks. The book aims to respond to three fundamental questions: (a) what factors explain Tanzania's recent acceleration in economic growth, (b) how well has the accelerated growth translated into reduced poverty, and (c) what needs to be done to sustain growth that is also pro-poor. This book focuses on three issues that are central to the success of Tanzania's poverty reduction efforts: What factors explain Tanzania's recent acceleration in economic growth? Has the accelerated economic growth translated into reduced poverty? What must be done to sustain economic growth that is pro-poor? The book presents evidence from the macroeconomic, sectoral, firm, and household levels that shed light on these questions. In addition, the book examines the effectiveness of measures that support the poor in efforts to accumulate human and physical capital, which would enhance their prospects of contributing to economic growth. Finally, it is important to mention that this book is a compilation of chapters written by authors from the African Development Bank (Peter Mwanakatwe), COWI Consultants (Kerstin Pfliegner), independent consultancies (Marianne Simonsen and Annabella Skof), and the World Bank (Jean-Eric Aubert, Vandana Chandra, Louise Fox, Henry Gordon, Johannes Hoogeveen, Pooja Kacker, Ying Li, Allister Moon, Philip Mpango, Ravi Ruparel, Anuja Utz, Robert J. Utz, and Michael Wong).

Book Education in Tanzania in the Era of Globalisation

Download or read book Education in Tanzania in the Era of Globalisation written by L.P. Lugalla and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education in Tanzania in the Era of Globalisation Challenges and Opportunities is a product of papers presented at a National Education Conference held in Dodoma, Tanzania in November 2016 and organised by the Aga Khan University-Institute for Educational Development, East Africa (AKU-IED-EA). At present, Tanzanias development direction is guided by Vision 2025, which aims to achieve a high quality livelihood for its people be attainment of Vision 2025 will depend largely on rapid socio-economic development based on several social and economic pillars including, most importantly, education. Clearly, for Tanzania, the scope and quality of education remains the single most important prerequisite to the attainment of Vision 2025 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The individual chapters in this publication, and their collective thrust, discuss the challenges in the education system in good faith and in the spirit of cooperation and collaboration guided by the belief that it is not the responsibility of the Government alone to see how these can be addressed. AKU IED EA has identd this as the responsibility of all well-meaning corporate bodies and citizens, and initiated thst conference of its type as its contribution to thore conference, as well as the publication, has to be seen as a model of good practice for universities in terms of sharing knowledge, experience, and practice with other stakeholders who are not in the academy, and more so, with politicians as well as government policy planners. The various authors of Education in Tanzania in the Era of Globalisation Challenges and Opportunities discuss issues within the context of the Tanzanian political economy against thects of globalization and seek to initiate a new kind of debate that is long overdue; a debate aimed at charting out appropriate strategies whose objective is to improve the quality of education in Tanzania so that it becomes a useful vehicle in enhancing processes of social change, transformation and development.

Book State and Business in Tanzania s Development

Download or read book State and Business in Tanzania s Development written by Samuel Mwita Wangwe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that countries' institutions play a major role in their economic development. Yet, the way they affect, and are affected by, development, and how to reform them are still poorly understood. In this companion volume, State and Business in Tanzania diagnoses the main weaknesses, root causes, and developmental consequences of Tanzania's institutions, and shows that the uncertainty surrounding its development paths and its difficulty in truly 'taking off' are related to institutional challenges. Based on a thorough account of the economic, social, and political development of the country, this diagnostic offers evidence on the quality of its institutions and a detailed analysis of critical institution- and development-sensitive areas among which state-business relations rank high, even though the institutional features of land management, civil service and the power sector are shown to be also of prime importance. This title is also available as Open Access.

Book The Second Economy in Marxist States

Download or read book The Second Economy in Marxist States written by Maria Los and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-13 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses and compares the unofficial economies and their control in ten marxist states: the USSR, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Cuba, Nicaragua, China, Angola and Tanzania. It provides a vivid, mosaic-like panorama of the hidden economies in these countries. The book breaks with the view that the unofficial economy is simply a by-product of the official economy. It shows an unfolding interplay between these two economies, which moulds and limits both the dynamics and the direction of the process of change. In her final essay, Maria Los develops a theoretical model linking second economies with the process of marxist economic development. The key stages of this process are identified as: (1) The stage of radical transformation; (2) The monopolisation period; (3) The reformist phase; and (4) Post- reformist decadence. The volume throws a new light on the prospects and problems of the reformist movements which have swept the Soviet Union, China and several other marxist states in the 1980s.
