The chapters treating the period from the sixth to the seventeenth century are reproduced from my Early European History, with minor modifications and with additional maps and illustrations. The entire work has been written since the outbreak of the World War, and its probable consequences have been kept constantly in mind. If it be true, as Bishop Stubbs once said, that nothing in the past is dead to the man who would learn how the present comes to be what it is, then surely the prime business of the author of a text-book dealing with European history is to make plain the remoter causes, as well as the immediate ante cedents, of a struggle epochal in the life of humanity. How far I have succeeded in doing so must be left to the reader's judgment. The Suggestions for Further Study contain a classified and annotated bibliography of those historical works which appear to be reasonably well adapted to the needs of pupils in secondary schools. References to the appropriate chapters of my Readings in Medieval and M odern History are also inserted in footnotes. But it is noticeable that each succeed ing generation of the mingled denizens of the Empire is further removed from the antique type and nearer to the mediaeval. The Empire remained geographi cally the source of religion and culture for peoples within it and without; and Christianity, as well as much from the pagan classic past, was passing to the new peoples in forms continually modified and ever nearer to the level of the early mediaeval centuries. For example, Augustine was a Roman Christian; he was not mediaeval. One hundred and fifty years after him comes Gregory the Great, who is partly Roman still, yet is touched with the new ignorance, the new barbarism. He is, however, close enough to Augustine to appropriate his doctrines and hand them on in modes nearer the level of the seventh and eighth centuries. This is an example of the Christian side of the matter. On the other hand, the classic spirit was dead before Gregory was born, and classic literature was degraded by the way in which it was understood. Virgil, for instance, was no longer Virgil, but incarnate grammar and authoritative history. Antique culture was also undergoing desiccation in compositions of the tran sitiou centuries, whose authors took what was spiritu ally closest to them and made it over in accordance with their own intelligence and character. Only the general sweep of the great current of events can be followed; only the salient features that contributed most to the development of the nations can be included. The two questions that must constantly be in the mind of the writer are, first, what to choose for the text, and second, how to present it. As to the first, he must be able to appraise historic values; he must present that which will lead the reader to visual ize the past so as best to grasp the problems that contributed most to the social, moral, economic, and political development of the peoples whom he is studying. Thus by acquiring a correct knowledge of his historical inheritance, the reader will understand and appreciate the principles on which are based the ideals and institutions of the civilization of the present.
