Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Reading-Book: Containing Such Portions of the History, Biography, Poetry, Prophecy, Precepts, and Parables, of the Old and New Testaments, as Form a Connected Narrative, in the Exact Words of Scripture In offering to the public this Bible reading-book, designed to take the place of the 'holy Scriptures in the School-room, and, in some degree, to supply those familiar lessons from the Inspired writers, which are the highest wisdom taught in the household some explanation of the plan, and motives of the compiler, may be expected. All Christians will, probably, agree, that the great purpose of Divine Revelation was to make manifest what man is to believe concerning God, and what duty God requires of man. But how many of the millions who now have the Bible in their homes think of it as a continuous history of the moral condition of the human race, from the creation to the final judgment day? The unity of the narrative is overlooked, owing to the variety of means employed for the same end, and to the many changes of agents, by whom God was carrying onward his great design of salvation. Book The Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by W. T. Davison and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisdom-Literature of the Old Testament The present volume completes the short Introduction to the Poetical Books of the Bible begun in The Praises of Israel, published last year. The phraseology of the title is not perfectly accurate, for Ecclesiastes is not poetical, and the Song of Songs does not properly belong to Wisdom-Literature. But the books of the Bible treated of in these two small volumes belong to the same group of Scriptures, and are conveniently studied together. If these brief Manuals prove to be of service to readers who have not time or opportunity to use larger and more valuable works, the labour of preparing them will be fully repaid. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Re-Discovery of the Old Testament For Biblical quotations I have kept largely to familiar words, though I have frequently modified the translation to some extent for reasons which are not stated, since they would distract the general reader. In no case has a change been introduced for a priori or dogmatic reasons, but only where philological or textual support could be provided to justify the change. It is a deep grief to me that while this book has been in the press Principal H. Wheeler Robinson has passed from our midst. I have left the Dedication unchanged. I have to thank Professor A. R. Johnson for his help in reading the proofs, and for his stimulating friendship, which has yielded many suggestions embodied in this book. I have also to thank Professor T. W. Manson for reading my work in proof and for many other kindnesses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the Old Testament Nearly all Old Testament scholars in Germany, England, and America, who have been trained in the universities and are not adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, are agreed as to the main results which have been achieved by careful investigations carried on during the nineteenth century, though there are necessarily differences of opinion upon secondary details. It is important that the reader should realise the immense gulf which separates the modern physical conditions of book-making, since the discovery of printing, from the ancient conditions when all records were laboriously copied by hand upon such rough materials as skins or papyrus and were preserved in rolls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Readings With My Children, Vol. 2 Sheba) saw that Samuel was a true prophet of the Lord, and they had faith in his words. Now, you will see from the story that I am going to tell you, that the Israelites were foolish enough Sometimes to act with out coming to Samuel for advice. It was some years after Samuel's vision when the Philistines, those old enemies of the Israelites, came up from their own country to fight them. You heard SO much about the Philistines in the story of Samson, that I hope you do not want me to remind you they were a wicked people who lived in Canaan. They never prayed to God, but to idols, and it vexed them to see the children of Israel serving the true God, and they Often quarrelled and fought with them. N ow, of course, if the children of Israel had wished to do the right thing, they would have come to the prophet Samuel, to ask his advice before they went out to fight the Philistines. Instead of this, out they all ran, with their swords, or anything they could find to fight with, against the Phili tines. Well, what do you expect to hear happened? Who do you think got the best of it Not the Israelites, you may be sure, when God felt angry with them, and would not help them. Just see what these Silly wicked people did next. Instead of coming penitent to Eli lor Samuel, telling him how sorry they were for their misconduct, they went to the priests, Hophni and Phinehas, the wicked sons of Eli, and asked them to bring the Ark of God out among their tents, for then nothing could prevent them conquering the Philistines. If Hophni and Phinehas had not been Sinful men, they would have said, No; we must not bring the Holy Ark into battle but they only thought of pleasing the people and getting presents4 the philistines and the ark. Book A Handbook to Old Testament Hebrew

Download or read book A Handbook to Old Testament Hebrew written by Samuel Gosnell Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook to Old Testament Hebrew: Containing an Elementary Grammar of the Language, With Reading Lessons, Notes on Many Scripture Passages and Copious Exercises The following work is intended to introduce the learner to the Hebrew of the Old Testament; affording all necessary help to the knowledge of words in their various forms and inflections, as well as of elementary syntax. Such an outline will, it is hoped, prepare the way for the study, in longer and more elaborate works, of a language, an acquaintance with which ought to be regarded as essential to candidates for the Christian ministry, as well as to those other students - a happily increasing class - who desire to learn for themselves what the Bible really is. It may appear a truism to say that those who would understand, much more expound, the Scriptures, should be able to' read them; and though a profound knowledge of their original languages may be attainable only by the few, the ability to study critical and exegetical commentaries with intelligence is, of itself, no mean acquisition.
