Book Reading Critically in the Fields of Literature and History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reading Critically in the Fields of Literature and History Classic Reprint written by Sylvia C. Kay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading Critically in the Fields of Literature and History This book has two aims: to supply much needed material in the field of critical reading; and to present this reading material in ac cordance with the newer methods evolving in our schools. These methods lay great stress on that important concomitant of all teaching, the development of democratic procedures. As an indi vidual, the student must be stimulated to comprehensive and critical judgment; as a member of the group he must be initiated into democratic procedures in analysis and discussion. In the classes where this material was first used experimentally, the method was employed as follows: the class first read the ex cerpt, with vocabulary helps from the teacher; then, as a group, they chose the facts they wished to consider as pertinent and set aside those they considered irrelevant. On contested issues a major ity vote was decisive. Additional material on the development of this method can be found in: Spencer Brown's They See for Them selves (harper and Brothers, New York); Witty and Kopel's Reading and the Educative Process (ginn and Co., Boston) Salt's Thinking Together (national Council of Teachers of English). Book History Literature Critical Theory

Download or read book History Literature Critical Theory written by Dominick LaCapra and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In History, Literature, Critical Theory, Dominick LaCapra continues his exploration of the complex relations between history and literature, here considering history as both process and representation. A trio of chapters at the center of the volume concern the ways in which history and literature (particularly the novel) impact and question each other. In one of the chapters LaCapra revisits Gustave Flaubert, pairing him with Joseph Conrad. Other chapters pair J. M. Coetzee and W. G. Sebald, Jonathan Littell's novel, The Kindly Ones, and Saul Friedlander's two-volume, prizewinning history Nazi Germany and the Jews. A recurrent motif of the book is the role of the sacred, its problematic status in sacrifice, its virulent manifestation in social and political violence (notably the Nazi genocide), its role or transformations in literature and art, and its multivalent expressions in "postsecular" hopes, anxieties, and quests. LaCapra concludes the volume with an essay on the place of violence in the thought of Slavoj Zizek. In LaCapra's view Zizek's provocative thought "at times has uncanny echoes of earlier reflections on, or apologies for, political and seemingly regenerative, even sacralized violence."

Book Reading Like a Writer

Download or read book Reading Like a Writer written by Francine Prose and published by Union Books. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her entertaining and edifying New York Times bestseller, acclaimed author Francine Prose invites you to sit by her side and take a guided tour of the tools and tricks of the masters to discover why their work has endured. Written with passion, humour and wisdom, Reading Like a Writer will inspire readers to return to literature with a fresh eye and an eager heart – to take pleasure in the long and magnificent sentences of Philip Roth and the breathtaking paragraphs of Isaac Babel; to look to John le Carré for a lesson in how to advance plot through dialogue and to Flannery O’ Connor for the cunning use of the telling detail; to be inspired by Emily Brontë ’ s structural nuance and Charles Dickens’ s deceptively simple narrative techniques. Most importantly, Prose cautions readers to slow down and pay attention to words, the raw material out of which all literature is crafted, and reminds us that good writing comes out of good reading.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature of the Nineteenth Century: On the Plan of the Author's "Compendium of English Literature" And Supplementary to It; Designed for Colleges and Advanced Classes in Schools, as Well as for Private Reading The second marked change in my book results, of course, from the necessity of keeping abreast with the intellectual progress of the age, - the busiest-brained generation the world has ever known. During the last fourteen 'years, a large number of authors have emerged, from greater or less obscurity of reputa tion, into assured prominence in their several departments of literature; and one of my most delicate tasks has been to set fifth in these pages a just record of such developments; and no emirt has been spared to determine fairly, as far as I could, the Mpamtive attitude, as well as the absolute literary status, of every prominent writer. That this has been, all along, a work Of great and constant difficulty and embarrassment, I need hardly I that I shall secure a unanimous verdict in favor of my sue eess upon this point, it would be idle to hepc; but of this I feel sure, that the most lenient criticism will be extended to me from those who have most widely viewed and critically examined this inimitable field. Book Some Lies and Errors of History

Download or read book Some Lies and Errors of History written by Reuben Parsons and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For the presentation of (some of) these (essays), no explanation need be tendered; but others are introduced, the themes of which have become trite, even to persons of no extraordinary erudition. Perhaps, therefore, indulgence should be asked for an apparently reckless augmentation of the mass of polemics already superfluous and tiresome. Nevertheless, such an apology shall not be made. The fact that the indicated errors are constantly being advanced, despite the multifarious refutations which are at the command of the sincere investigator; the fact that these errors too often meet with silence on the part of those whose highest interests demand their exposition;[iv] these strange and saddening considerations justify our action, and preclude any fear of its being ascribed to a 'cacoethes scribendi'. "Some Lies and Errors of History" is a collection of essays on historical persons and events, aimed at debunking some of the lies commonly held as truth, but which author, the Rev. Reuben Parsons, DD, insists would be easily discounted if a critical look of them were made. Some of the events covered include: 'St. Cyril of Alexandria and the Murder of Hypatia', 'The Divorce of Napoleon and Josephine', 'Galileo', 'Louis XI.; The Travestied and the Real', 'The Middle Age Not a Starless Night', and 'The Man With the Iron Mask.'

Book English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Literature Classic Reprint written by Frederick John Rahtz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature Uring the last few years the importance of English Literature in any system of education - whether Primary, Secondary, or University - has been gradually recognised. And, partly as a consequence of this recognition, there is an increasing number of older readers who desire to know a little more' about our great authors and their works. Among the many excellent works dealing with English Literature, there appears to be room for something between a mere primer on the one hand, and a long and advanced history of literature on the other. The present volume, written in a simple style with as few technicalities as possible, is designed to fill this inter mediate position. It is primarily intended for pupils in the Upper Forms of Secondary Schools, but it will be found equally suitable for the general reader. Its aim is to review in a general but critical manner the ground work of English Literature. Special attention has therefore been paid to the course of development of our literature, to the general characteristics of each period, and to the external influences which have from time to time affected its progress. The work and style of the greater authors have been discussed somewhat fully, and brief illustrative extracts from their works have been added. Lesser authors have been treated in due pro portion, care having been taken not to crowd the book with names, dates, or unimportant details. Questions have been appended to each chapter some of these are of a simple nature, whilst others are intended for those who are able to give further thought and study to the subject. Book American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting 1834 1853

Download or read book American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting 1834 1853 written by Meredith L. McGill and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The antebellum period has long been identified with the belated emergence of a truly national literature. And yet, as Meredith L. McGill argues, a mass market for books in this period was built and sustained through what we would call rampant literary piracy: a national literature developed not despite but because of the systematic copying of foreign works. Restoring a political dimension to accounts of the economic grounds of antebellum literature, McGill unfolds the legal arguments and political struggles that produced an American "culture of reprinting" and held it in place for two crucial decades. In this culture of reprinting, the circulation of print outstripped authorial and editorial control. McGill examines the workings of literary culture within this market, shifting her gaze from first and authorized editions to reprints and piracies, from the form of the book to the intersection of book and periodical publishing, and from a national literature to an internally divided and transatlantic literary marketplace. Through readings of the work of Dickens, Poe, and Hawthorne, McGill seeks both to analyze how changes in the conditions of publication influenced literary form and to measure what was lost as literary markets became centralized and literary culture became stratified in the early 1850s. American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting, 1834-1853 delineates a distinctive literary culture that was regional in articulation and transnational in scope, while questioning the grounds of the startlingly recent but nonetheless powerful equation of the national interest with the extension of authors' rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of censorship in modern Britain For Victorian lawmakers and judges, the question of whether a book should be allowed to circulate freely depended on whether it was sold to readers whose mental and moral capacities were in doubt, by which they meant the increasingly literate and enfranchised working classes. The law stayed this way even as society evolved. In 1960, in the obscenity trial over D. H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover, the prosecutor asked the jury, "Is it a book that you would even wish your wife or your servants to read?" Christopher Hilliard traces the history of British censorship from the Victorians to Margaret Thatcher, exposing the tensions between obscenity law and a changing British society. Hilliard goes behind the scenes of major obscenity trials and uncovers the routines of everyday censorship, shedding new light on the British reception of literary modernism and popular entertainments such as the cinema and American-style pulp fiction and comic books. He reveals the thinking of lawyers and the police, authors and publishers, and politicians and ordinary citizens as they wrestled with questions of freedom and morality. He describes how supporters and opponents of censorship alike tried to remake the law as they reckoned with changes in sexuality and culture that began in the 1960s. Based on extensive archival research, this incisive and multifaceted book reveals how the issue of censorship challenged British society to confront issues ranging from mass literacy and democratization to feminism, gay rights, and multiculturalism.
