This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graded List of Stories for Reading Aloud The making of the above list is no attempt to compile a graded list of the world's best stories. It does not attempt to include every book which may be read aloud with pleasure and profit in the class rooms. It aims rather to give a list of some twenty or thirty books which will be found enjoyable to both teachers and pupils, and will leave the children with some idea of the best juvenile literature, and to give them stories which will leave behind in their minds a kind of fine and wholesome feeling for the whole day. Book Read Aloud Plays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Read Aloud Plays Classic Reprint written by Horace Holley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Read-Aloud Plays Selves as short stories, but in each case I found that the dramatic element, speech, tended to absorb the imper sonal element of comment and description, so that it proved easier to go on by allowing the characters to establish the situation themselves. As I grew conscious of this tendency, I realized that even for the purpose of reading it might be advantageous to render the short story subject dramatically, since this method is, after all, one of extreme realism, which should also result in an increase of interest. As the series devel oped, however, I perceived that something more than a new short story form was involved; I perceived that the read-aloud play has a distinct character and function of its own. In the long run, everything human rises or falls to the level of speech. The culminating point, even of action the most poignant or emotion the most intimate, is where it finds the right word or phrase by which it is translated into the lives of others. Every literary form has always paid, even though usually un conscious, homage to the drama. But the drama as achieved on the stage includes, for various reasons, only a small portion of its own inherent possibility. Exigen cies of time and machinery, as well as the strong influ ence of custom, deny to the stage the value of themes. Book Teaching to Read Classic Reprint

Download or read book Teaching to Read Classic Reprint written by James Laughlin Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching to Read There is no other subject in which the results have been so unsatisfactory as in reading, considering the amount of time devoted to it in school. The chief reason for the failure has been that the aim has been to train the race to read aloud instead of training it to read. The power of reading well means the power of getting thought from visible language rapidly, definitely and comprehensively. Very nearly all reading has to be done silently, yet in the past, the aim of the schools has been to train pupils to read aloud. Tested by the power of their pupils as a whole to read well aloud, or to read well silently, the work of the schools has been a lamentable failure. The teachers of the past believed that the way to train a child to be a good silent reader was to train him to read aloud. The reverse is true. The true way to make both good oral readers and good readers is to begin by making good silent readers. The aim in the past was to train pupils to read slowly; the true aim is to train them to read as fast as possible. The man who reads only two pages in the time in which he should be able to read three pages is handicapped for life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Reading by Grades: Sixth Year The pupil who is in his sixth year at school should be able to read quite well. He should be able to pronounce at sight and without hesita tion all new or unusual words; and when reading aloud, his tones should be so clear, his enunciation so faultless, and his manner so agreeable that his hearers shall listen with pleasure and shall have a ready under standing oi whatever is being read. He is now prepared to devote more and more attention to literary criticisin - that is, to the study of the peculiarities of style which distinguish any selection, the passages which are remarkable for their beauty, their truth, or their adaptation to the particular purpose for which they were written. The habit should be cultivated of looking for and enjoying the admirable qualities of any literary production, and particularly of such productions as are generally recognized as the classics of our language. While learning to distinguish between good literature and that sort of writing which, properly speaking, is not literature at all, the pupil's acquaintance with books is enlarged and extended. He learns to know what are the best books and why they are so considered; and he acquires some knowledge of the lives of the best authors and of the circumstances under which certain of their works were produced. The present volume is designed to aid the learner in the acquisition of all these ends. The selections are of a highly interesting character, and illustrate almost every variety of English composition. To assist in their comprehension, many of the selections are introduced or followed by brief historical or bibliographical notes. Hints also are given as to col lateral, or supplementary readings on a variety of subjects. To assist the pupil still further to enlarge his acquaintance with books and authors, additional notes, literary and biographical, are given in the appendix; here also may be found several pages of brief notes explanatory of dith cult passages, unusual expressions, and historical references, such as might otherwise be stumbling stones in the way of the learner. The numerous portraits of authors is another important feature designed to add to the interest and beauty of the book, and to assist the pupil to a more intimate acquaintance with the makers of our literature. Most of the full-page pictures are reproductions of famous paintings, and these, while serving as illustrations of the text which they accompany, are designed to Introduce the learner to some of the masters of art also, and perform the more important office of cultivating and enlarging his aesthetic tastes and sympathies. Book Good Stories for Great Holidays Arranged for Story Telling and Reading Aloud and for the Children s Own Reading Classic Reprint

Download or read book Good Stories for Great Holidays Arranged for Story Telling and Reading Aloud and for the Children s Own Reading Classic Reprint written by Frances Jenkins Olcott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good Stories for Great Holidays, Arranged for Story-Telling and Reading Aloud and for the Children's Own Reading This volume, though intended also for the children's own reading and for reading aloud, is especially planned for story-telling. The latter is a delightful way of arousing a gladsome holiday spirit, and of showing the inner meanings of different holidays. As stories used for this purpose are scattered through many volumes, and as they are not always in the concrete form required for story-telling, I have endeavored to bring together myths, legends, tales, and historical stories suitable to holiday occasions. There are here collected one hundred and twenty stories for seventeen holidays - stories grave, gay, humorous, or fanciful; also some that are spiritual in feeling, and others that give the delicious thrill of horror so craved by boys and girls at Halloween time. The range of selection is wide, and touches, all sides of wholesome boy and girl nature, and the tales have the power to arouse an appropriate holiday spirit. As far as possible the stories are presented in their original form. When, however, they are too long for inclusion, or too loose in structure for story-telling purposes, they are adapted. Adapted stories are of two sorts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Best Stories to Tell to Children Classic Reprint written by Sara Cone Bryant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Best Stories to Tell to Children It is the belief of the publishers, here and in England, that some of the stories ought to be printed separately from these books on method, for the more ready ac cess of children themselves and those whose interest is of a wholly untechnical sort. This is the more de sirable because stories which are especially adapted to be told are equally charming for reading aloud or to one's self. The converse is not true: stories written to be read are rarely suitable for the story-teller's art until they have been skilfully adapted. In other words, those tales which can be and have been told with suc cess are in a sense the chosen few; they, of all the world's stories, are most charming to hear or to read. Book The Children s First Book of Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Children s First Book of Poetry Classic Reprint written by Emilie Kip Baker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's First Book of Poetry We hear much nowadays about the decline of poetry. No one reads poetry any more. Poets cannot make a living. The world has ceased to express its ideals in verse. The novel and the short story, rather than the epic or the lyric, furnish our instruction and our inspiration. The magazine and the newspaper are our substitute for a library; and these print verses only to fill out a column or a page. In short, we are living in a reflective, a scientific, a prose age. So we are told. Like most generalizations about the complex phenomena of modern life, this is only partially true. Every year brings new volumes of dramatic, narrative, and lyric poetry of high merit. Yeats, Synge, and Phillips; Noyes, Masefield, and Gibson; - these and scores of other names come to mind to prove that the gift of song has not fled the earth. Nor are the old poets forgotten. Book More Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children

Download or read book More Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children written by William F. Russell and published by Crown Publishing Group (NY). This book was released on 1986 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading aloud is the single most important contribution an adult can make to a child's success in school. More Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children, like its predecessor, Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children, gives parents and other adult readers the help they need to share an experience with children that is both important and fun. Educator William E Russell, Ed.D., has compiled a collection of great stories, poems, and excerpts from novels and plays that spans centuries and styles. Complete with introductions and pronunciation guides for each selection, and divided into three different listening levels (for children 5 and up, 8 and up, and 11 and up), these classics make accessible and entertaining tales for reader and listener alike. From Hans Christian Andersen's "The Emperor's New Clothes" and Shakespeare's Macbeth, to stories by Mark Twain, O. Henry, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, and scenes from Little Women, Through the Looking-Glass, Beowulf, Treasure Island, and Helen Keller's autobiography, these stories will delight any child. More Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children includes speeches by Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr., along with a selection of poems, from Shakespeare's sonnets to "Arithmetic" by Carl Sandburg and "Birches" by Robert Frost. Reading aloud, says Dr. Russell, creates "teachable moments: sparks of interest in learning about where or when or how an event in the story occurred; moments at which a child practically demands to be taught." Like the original Classics to Read Aloud to Your Children, this book serves a growing need among children and adults for that "teachable moment" and is destined to become a classic in its own right.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Children Reading aloud with taste and expression is only part of the school training. Children must learn to read both to and for themselves; to get the sense by the appeal of the printed page to the eye, as well as of the spoken words to the ear. That children do not acquire this power generally in the primary and grammar schools is known to secondary school teach ers; repeatedly. In my high school classes I have found that reading twenty pages of a comparatively easy history or even of a novel, was a time-taking task without definite results in the way of securing the ideas. Since this power cannot be acquired without years of training, a beginning should be made in the elementary schools. There is no doubt that many of these stories would be most profitable and engrossing seat work, a means of relaxation, which would not involve mischief making.
