Book Read in the Name of Your Lord

Download or read book Read in the Name of Your Lord written by Nermeen Mouftah and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt's January 2011 uprising spurred millions to action with a cacophony of demands—including the call to address Egypt's education crisis and adult literacy rates. Read in the Name of Your Lord traces the push for universal literacy as a project caught between revolutionary activism and Islamic reformism in post-Mubarak Egypt. Despite their many disagreements, religious reformers, revolutionaries, and state actors converged on literacy as the first step toward realizing aspirations of the revolution. They invoked the verse Muslims believe was the first to be revealed, "Read in the name of your Lord," to teach literacy as a religious duty and the foundation for the country's future. Nermeen Mouftah unravels how this religiously inspired push for universal literacy was born of twenty-first-century scripturalism and simultaneously went beyond the Quran, to make reading and writing virtuous acts of the liberal state. While revolutionary literacy campaigns soon vanished and adult literacy rates remained stubbornly low, their efforts revealed the importance of recognizing alternative modes of text processing and the personhood and knowledge of nonliterate people. Read in the Name of Your Lord demonstrates how the rise in modern scripturalism underpinned literacy activism, blurring the binary between secular and religious knowledge.

Book I Don t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist

Download or read book I Don t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist written by Norman L. Geisler and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2021-05-17 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To some, the concept of having faith in a higher power or a set of religious beliefs is nonsensical. Indeed, many view religion in general, and Christianity in particular, as unfounded and unreasonable. Norman Geisler and Frank Turek argue, however, that Christianity is not only more reasonable than all other belief systems, but is indeed more rational than unbelief itself. With conviction and clear thinking, Geisler and Turek guide readers through some of the traditional, tested arguments for the existence of a creator God. They move into an examination of the source of morality and the reliability of the New Testament accounts concerning Jesus. The final section of the book deals with a detailed investigation of the claims of Christ. This volume will be an interesting read for those skeptical about Christianity, as well as a helpful resource for Christians seeking to articulate a more sophisticated defense of their faith.

Book Praise the Name of the Lord

Download or read book Praise the Name of the Lord written by Michael Louis Fitzgerald and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017-01-13 with total page 184 pages. The Bible provides Christians with a rich array of names for God, and the ninety-nine Names that Islam gives traditionally to God are drawn from the Qur’an. Praise the Name of the Lord is an offering of texts, from the Qur’an and Bible, meant to lead to meditation and prayer. To pray starting from the texts of another religion can help us to acquire a better appreciation of that religion. It is possible that we will find different echoes that can capture our attention and may nourish our prayer, encouraging dialogue with the persons among whom we are living.

  • Pages : 550 pages

Download or read book The Quran written by Allah (god) and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Qur'an, a pious Muslim hears God's voice guiding and encouraging, consoling and reproaching, promising the righteous mercy and eternal bliss, while threatening the wicked with wrath and eternal torment. For Muslims, the Qur'an is the word of God, which has entered human time to shape history. According to Muslim sources, the Angel Gabriel revealed himself to Prophet Muhammad in 610 CE while he was in prayerful retreat in a cave on Mount Hira, outside Mecca. It is said that in this initial meeting, the Angel Gabriel pressed Muhammad so vehemently that he felt he was being choked. The Qur'an states that the angel then commanded: Recite in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a blood clot. Recite, for your Lord is most magnanimous - who taught by the pen; taught man that which he did not know. (Qur'an 96:1-5)Muslims claim that God warned Prophet Muhammad: We shall surely lay upon you weighty speech, and enjoined him to rise up through most of the night in prayer, and remember fervently what he was told to be, "the Lord of the east and the west" (Qur'an 73:5 and 73:8). For Muslims this "weighty speech" marked Prophet Muhammad as the last Messenger of God to humankind; this event was to have a great impact on the course of human history. The Qur'an is said to have been communicated to Prophet Muhammad in two ways. Muslims believe that it was communicated through the Angel Gabriel. These communications were revealed in small portions: single verses, groups of verses, and entire chapters or suras over a period of twenty to twenty-two years. The Qur'an for Muslims is not only words that can be uttered, heard, and recorded; it is also the heavenly archetype of which the recited and written Qur'an is only an earthly copy. The Qur'an in its heavenly archetypal form is for Muslims the source of divine revelation throughout human history and is eternally preserved by God. It is the covenant of God with humankind which He established with the children of Adam when they were but ideas or essences in the divine realm. Prophet Muhammad also professed to have experienced this heavenly Qur'an, in addition to having been the recipient of revelation. He would experience a profound spiritual state, shivering on a hot summer day or sweating on a cold winter day, hearing sounds like the ringing of a bell. These sounds transformed themselves in his consciousness into human words, which he memorised and had recorded.Muslims also believe that the Qur'an was also sent down in part, to Prophet Muhammad's heart on the "night of determination" (Qur'an 44:3 and 97:1), a blessed night for all Muslims. This event sanctified his life and made Prophet Muhammad an example for Muslims to follow. In the Qur'an, God asked: Am I not your Lord? and those who chose to worship God affirmed as Lord responded with the words: Yes, we bear witness... (Qur'an 7: 172). The Qur'an is the seal and testimony to this covenant. Its message is, for Muslims, a powerful affirmation of divine lordship and Muslim commitment. The Qur'an as an earthly text has been inextricably bound to Muslim history. It served as an answer to the problems of the Arab society in Prophet Muhammad's time. The Qur'an was also a response to Prophet Muhammad's questions about the meaning of human life and the mystery of creation, and was closely linked to the history of the nascent Muslim community in Mecca and, later, in Medina. Many of the Qur'anic verses are said to have been revealed in answer to specific questions or life situations. The answers given are seen by Muslims to be general principles, moral imperatives, or precepts applicable to all times and places. The family of the Prophet, which the Qur'an directly addressed (see Qur'an 33:32), is seen by Muslims to be a model for all families and all societies in the world

Book Al Qur an the Guidance for Mankind English Translation of the Meanings of Al Qur an with Arabic

Download or read book Al Qur an the Guidance for Mankind English Translation of the Meanings of Al Qur an with Arabic written by Muhammad Farooq-i-Azam Malik and published by The Institute of Islamic Knowledge. This book was released on 1997 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Al-Qur'an, the Guidance for mankind, is a unique translation of the Holy Qur'an in contemporary American English. It includes the Biography of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, his mission as a Prophet, his ranking as in the human history. Text is paragraphed by theme and theme is written in the margins on each page for easy reference. Its features include - (1) Field Testing the Communication of Divine Message: The unique feature of this translation is its field testing for over 3 1/2 years to improve the communication and understanding of the Divine Message. Translation passages were given to the New Muslim and Non-Muslim high school and college students for reading under the supervision of various Ulema (scholars). After reading, the person was asked to explain as to what he/she understood from the passage. If his/her understanding was the same as is in the Arabic Text of the Holy Qur'an then we concluded that we have been successful in conveying the Divine Message properly. If his/her understanding was different than what the Qur'anic verses were stating, we kept on rewording the translation until those verses were understood properly. It was tremendous patience on part of the participants. May Allah reward them all. (2) Simplicity: In this translation Simple Language and Direct Approach is used for appealing to the common sense of scholars and common people. (3) Understandability: There are no foot notes to refer and no commentary or lengthy explanations to read. All necessary explanations have been incorporated right there in the text with italic type setting to differentiate from the translation of the meanings of Qur'anic Arabic Text. (4) Outline of Pertinent Information: Before the start of each Srah, information relating to its Period of Revelation, Major Issues, Divine Laws and Guidance has been presented as an outline. Then a summary of the preceding events has been tabulated for the reader to understand the histo! rical background to grasp the full meaning of the Divine Message. (5) Reviews, Input and Approvals: This project was started in 1991 and initial draft completed in 1994. Then the Translation was sent to different Ulema (Scholars) in Town and throughout United States for their review and input. After their reviews and input it was sent to Jme Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in Egypt, Ummal Qur in Saudi Arabia and International Islamic University in Pakistan for their review, input and approval. This translation was published after their reviews and approvals.

Book The Majestic Reading

Download or read book The Majestic Reading written by Servant of God and published by Author House. This book was released on 2009 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quran "The Reading" is the message of the Creator to Mankind, and it confirms what passed before it and points to what is to come to Mankind, and confirms the guidance sent to Father Adam, Noah, Hud, Saleh, Father Abraham, Lot, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob (aka Israel), Joseph, Shuaib, Moses, Aaron, King David, King Solomon, Imran, Zachariah, Mary, John (aka Yahya), Messiah Jesus and all other Messengers and Prophets of God. It adds nothing to Faith and Law that came in the unadulterated Torah and Bible (aka Injeel). It was sent to a man called Mohammad who was illiterate, could not read or write a book, and was astray till God chose him and sent His Spirit Gabriel to turn him to the path. The revelation came down on Mohammad from the time he was chosen by God, and his subsequent expulsion from Mecca and fighting, and return to Mecca and the House, the Sanctified, in the Mosque (Church or Synagogue), the Sanctified (Kaaba and its surroundings) and the return of all that God wished to the control of His Messenger and the believers with him. After all this, God sent down His Spirit and Angels to finalize the Quran, ensure it was written, and delivered it to Mohammad and his followers in ten nights of ONE month of Ramadan at the time of the Contention (Hajj), the Great, to the House, the Old, in Jerusalem (circa 628 AD), they are referred to as the nights of measure better than a thousand months, in which all commands were decided upon by the Will of God.The Book in Arabic, which has 114 Chapters or "Surahs", appeared on Earth in the 7th century A.D. and cannot be changed because God protects it, it is the statement/narration of the Holy Spirit Gabriel, highest of the Messengers of God. In it speak to us many Messengers, and also Mohammad, and there are sayings for us to follow and repeat. Wherever you see the word "Say!" it is an order to Mohammad to say something, for us to listen, obey, understand and follow, and repeat where needed. Similarly, many other Messengers speak to us whom we need to listen, obey, understand and follow, and repeat where needed, and of course Gabriel, and we need to do the same for what he tells us by Gods' command. God Himself speaks to us in it as well; you need to figure out where.Just because the Book is in Arabic gives NO supremacy to the Arabs, nor to any other race. It is for all Mankind and Demonkind and for any who want guidance from God. I have strived to translate it as best as God lets me, and I ask God for forgiveness where God has let me err. Read for yourselves and understand for your souls, no one can guide us except with the will of God, and every soul must choose to be guided before God guides her. The Quran can only be understood by those chosen by God Himself, and it will only be understood by those who are humble to the Unseen God. The English text cannot supersede the Arabic text, the text in Arabic are the living Words of God, and I mean "Alive". The Quran is a witness from God, just as the Torah is a witness from God from before, and soon Messiah Jesus will be a witness over us again, just like we are witnesses over each other and the Angel Messengers are witnesses over us, and God over everything Witnesses. The time approaches for Mankind's Judgment, but they wander around oblivious. Those who hold the Quran today and from their mouths they utter "We follow it" have destroyed the fabric of its meaning and commandments, and soon God will repay them "fully" for what they have perpetrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us are regular people who have good days and bad days. Our lives are radically ordinary and unexciting. That means they're the kind of lives God gets excited about. While the world worships beauty and power and wealth, God hides his glory in the simple, the mundane, the foolish, working in unawesome people, things, and places. In our day of celebrity worship and online posturing, this is a refreshing, even transformative way of understanding God and our place in his creation. It urges us to treasure a life of simplicity, to love those whom the world passes by, to work for God's glory rather than our own. And it demonstrates that God has always been the Lord of the cross--a Savior who hides his grace in unattractive, inglorious places.Your God Is Too Glorious reminds readers that while a quiet life may look unimpressive to the world, it's the regular, everyday people that God tends to use to do his most important work.
