Book excerpt: Effects of fuel plates successively withdrawn from the center fuel element of a seven-by-three core loading at the Oak Ridge Bulk Shielding Facility were evaluated by two-dimensional two-group diffusion calculations performed on the NASA reactor simulator. Two calculation methods were used: (1) The slowing-down properties of the experimental fuel element were represented by infinite media parameters; and (2) the finite size of the experimental fuel element was recognized, and the slowing-down properties of the surrounding core were attributed to this small region. Reasonable agreement existed between experimental and calculated effects.

Book excerpt: Measurements of fast neutron and gamma ray dose rates in water along the centerline of the Bulk Shielding Reactor (BSR) are compared with predictions made by use of three available computer programs. It is found that the predictions are very dependent on the assumptions made concerning power distribution and that the more accurate descriptions of the source lead to predictions that agree with measurements to within 20% throughout thickness ranges as great as 100 centimeters of water. Book excerpt: An attempt is made to ascertain the optimum working conditions of a pile oscillator and to compare this method with the danger coefficient technique from the point of view of minimum amount of resonance absorption which can be detected. The space-time behavior of the absorption properties of the sample is described by means of a delta -function and the reactor kinetic equations are obtained by using a single mode expansion of the flux. The results are applied to a bare reactor model equivalent to the fully reflected, parallelepiped BSR-I. (W.D.M.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BSR operated at an average power level of 1825 kW for 76.75% of the time during April, May, and June. Water-quality control in both the reactor primary and secondary cooling systems was satisfactory. The BSR was operated at low and variable power during this quarter for 45 hours as part of the training programs for nuclear engineering students from Mississippi State University and the University of Tennessee. The PCA was also used in the above mentioned training programs and was operated on five occasions when nuclear engineering students from Mississippi State University and the University of Kentucky actively participated in training laboratories. The PCA was also operated on eighteen occasions for the Reactivity Measurements experiment and the Reduced Enrichment in Research and Test Reactors experiment (RERTR).

Book excerpt: The thermodynamic and transport prorerties of high-temperature air are found in closed form starting from approximate partition functions for the major components in air and neglecting all minor components. The compressibility, energy, entropy, the specific heats, the speed of sound, the coefficients of viscosity and of thermal conductivity, and the Prandtl numbers for air are tabulated from 500 degrees to 15,000 degrees K over a range of pressure from 0.0001 to 100 atmospheres. The enthalpy of air and the mol fractions of the major components of air can easily be found from the tabulated values for compressibility and energy. It is predicted that the Prandtl number for fully ionized air will become small compared to unity, the order of 0.01, and this implies that boundary layers in such flow will be very transparent to heat flux.
