Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I can remember writing poetry as early as the age of fourteen. For me, writing poems was either an expression of young love or a means of escaping farm life. I do know I write what I feel deep in my heart. Sometimes I would daydream about what life would be like after leaving the farm. At that time, I did not appreciate or value the importance of farm life. Then falling in love for the first time gave me words that would flow like water. That was the beginning of my poetry. Then came my retirement from the Air Force. I took a job as a substitute teacher to test the waters and see if I wanted to go back to the classroom. On May 23, 1995, was my last substitute teaching positions for the year. The last period of the day was a literature class, and yes, you guessed it, it was an assignment to write a poem. After directing the students on what they were to do, I sat back, thought about my daughter, who was also graduating, and at that moment, I wrote with them. The poem that came out of that session, "Life Captured," was the first in this book. After that, the words would sometimes overwhelm me. It did not matter where or when. I would sometimes wake up from a deep sleep, and there were words on my heart. Driving down the street, I would have to pull off the road. And can you imagine sitting in church, concentrating on the words of the pastor, and poem comes into your heart? That is what it was like for next few years. When the word came, I made every effort to put them on paper. If I did not have a notepad, I would write on whatever was available, a store receipts, the back of an envelope, or even a paper bag. It did not matter; I just knew I had to capture the words. You see, there was a problem with these abrupt encounters with words. I found, through experience, that I could not ignore them because if I did, they would be lost. Yes, the words that were flowing so freely at the time would be gone if I did not take heed at that exact moment. So I learned incredibly early that it did not matter when or where the words came; I had to stop everything and write them down. So you see, my poetry comes to me at times when the spirit urges it. I cannot just will a poem to be. It must be stirred up in my spirit. My poetry is a combination of spiritual and emotional love. The love for people and my love of God. I never know which will spark the flame, and that does not matter, but I do know I must be ready to put pen to paper when it happens.

Book To Touch Hearts Pedagogical Spirituality and St John Baptist de La Salle

Download or read book To Touch Hearts Pedagogical Spirituality and St John Baptist de La Salle written by George Van Grieken FSC and published by George Van Grieken FSC. This book was released on 2011-03-25 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work addresses Lasallian pedagogical spirituality, defined as the dynamic integration of foundational convictions, basic operative commitments, and consistent practices permeating the teaching dimensions of schools that claim the heritage of St. John Baptist de La Salle and the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The dissertation examines the content of Lasallian pedagogical spirituality and proposes measures for realizing its vitality within Lasallian school life. Particular pedagogical characteristics, components of an overall pedagogical spirituality, are present in the original charism of St. John Baptist de La Salle. The basic operative commitments that underlie those characteristics ought to be integrally realized in a pedagogy that claims to be Lasallian and wholly incorporated in the formation of Lasallian educators. There are three sequential parts to the dissertation: 1) an overview of the St. John Baptist de La Salle's context and personal history, 2) an overview of his literature followed by an analysis of aspects of Lasallian pedagogical spirituality evidenced in that literature according to five pedagogical elements: the teacher, the student, the teacher/student relationship, the activity of teaching, and the school in general, and 3) a contemporary articulation of the Lasallian basic operative commitments that characterize his spirituality today, along with their implications for the formation of Lasallian educators Extrapolating from the life and writings of De La Salle, ten Lasallian operative commitments are proposed. The commitments are presented in the form of attributes that may be applied to Lasallian institutions and their pedagogical components: 1) centered in and nurtured by the life of faith, 2) trusting providence in discerning God's will, 3) with creativity and fortitude, 4) through the agency the Holy Spirit, 5) incarnating Christian paradigms & dynamics, 6) with practical orientation, 7) devoted to education, accessible and comprehensive, 8) committed to the poor, 9) working in association, 10) expressing a lay vocation. The dissertation concludes by presenting teacher formation structures and strategies for introducing Lasallian operative commitments and by providing a Lasallian Mission and Vision Statement.

Book Identity Mediation and the Cunning of Capital

Download or read book Identity Mediation and the Cunning of Capital written by Ani Maitra and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Identity, Mediation, and the Cunning of Capital, Ani Maitra urgently calls for a reevaluation of identity politics as an aesthetic maneuver regulated by capitalism. A dominant critical trend in the humanities, Maitra argues, is to dismiss or embrace identity through the formal properties of a privileged aesthetic medium such as literature, cinema, or even the performative body. In contrast, he demonstrates that identity politics becomes unavoidably real and material only because the minoritized subject is split between multiple sites of mediation—visual, linguistic, and sonic—while remaining firmly tethered to capitalism’s hierarchical logic of value production. Only in the interstices of media can we track the aesthetic conversion of identitarian difference into value, marked by the inequities of race, class, gender, and sexuality. Maitra’s archive is transnational and multimodal. Moving from anticolonial polemics to psychoanalysis to diasporic experimental literature to postcolonial feminist and queer media, he lays bare the cunning by which capitalism produces and fragments identity through an intermedial “aesthetic dissonance” with the commodity form. Maitra’s novel contribution to theories of identity and to the concept of mediation will interest a wide range of scholars in media studies, critical race and postcolonial studies, and critical aesthetics.

Book Tony Greig

Download or read book Tony Greig written by Joyce Greig and published by Macmillan Publishers Aus.. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tony Greig was a fearless cricketer, a born entertainer, a stalwart friend and a loving son and father. His death in December 2012 was met with an outpouring of grief from family, friends, colleagues and fans. In this wonderful memoir, Tony's life is recounted by two of those who knew him best - his mother, Joycie, and his eldest son, Mark. Tony's story began in his beloved South Africa when Joycie embarked on an extraordinary war-time love affair with a man not her husband, Sandy Greig. From schoolboy cricketing prodigy, to his early days playing for English country side Sussex, Tony travelled the world meeting an array of cricket greats. He was eventually made captain of England, but then was removed from the job when he controversially threw in his lot with Kerry Packer and his World Series Cricket in 1977. Together, Tony and Packer changed the game forever and formed a friendship that lasted 28 years until Packer's death in 2005. With Packer's offer of a 'job for life', Tony joined the Nine Network as a commentator and settled his family in Australia. From behind the mic, Tony became part of the fabric of the Australian summer. His knowledge of the game, his respect for players from all countries, but particularly for those from the Subcontinent, his humour and above all his passion for cricket made him one of the game's best loved and best known figures. This rich and fascinating life has been retold with warmth and love, giving us an unforgettable portrait of a great man.
