Book excerpt: The importance of rhizosphere in plant growth and development was first reported by Lorentz Hilter a century ago and it was redefined by Pinton as the zone that includes the soil influenced by the root along with root tissues colonized by microorganisms (Darrah, 1993). Roots are the major part of the plant through which plants derive nutrients and water from the soil. However, for higher efficiency of nutrient absorption and protection against abiotic and biotic stresses, plant roots establish sophisticated molecular signaling mechanisms with diverse soil flora and fauna. In the rhizosphere environment, the interaction between plant roots, soil and microbes occur in very complex ways and significantly effects on soil physical and chemical properties, which in turn modulate the microbial population in the rhizosphere (Nihorimbere et al., 2011). Recently, scientists have started realizing the importance of a specific rhizosphere interactions and its direct role in production of higher crop yield, while maintaining healthy soil conditions; which is the basis for sustainable agriculture and need of alternative approaches for overcoming some of the negative effects related to green-revolution, which includes overuse of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, reduced use of organic matter and poor nutrient management.

Much of that progress has been captured in the chapters of this book. Breakthroughs have been made possible through integration of molecular and whole-plant aspects. The classical boundaries between physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology have vanished. There has been a strong focus on a limited number of model species, including Arabidopsis thaliana. That focus has allowed greater insight into the significance of specific genes for plant development and functioning. However, many species are very different from A. thaliana, in that they are mycorrhizal, develop a symbiosis with N2-fixing microsymbionts, or have other specialised root structures. Also, some have a much greater capacity to resist extreme environments, such as soil acidity, salinity, flooding or heavy-metal toxicities, due to specific adaptations. Research on species other than A. thaliana is therefore pivotal, to develop new knowledge in plant sciences in a comprehensive manner. This fundamental new knowledge can be the basis for important applications in, e.g., agriculture and plant conservation. Although significant progress has been made, much remains to be learnt. It is envisaged that discoveries made in the recent past will likely lead to major breakthroughs in the next decade.

Root resorption has been a perplexing clinical condition for dental practitioners as it has a broad range of clinical manifestation with varied severity and also due to the associated diagnostic dilemma. Early detection is essential for successful management and outcome of root resorption. Root resorptions have several local and systemic predisposing factors. Hence, patients with a history of one or more predisposing factors should be monitored closely for initial signs of root resorption. Cone beam computed tomography appears to be a promising diagnostic tool for confirming the presence, appreciating the true nature, and managing the internal and external root resorptions. In addition to the 2-D slices, 3-D reconstruction enables further assessment of the area of interest which enables the right treatment modality for the real pathology. Thorough knowledge regarding the pathogenesis and various factors that can cause root resorption is essential for a predictive therapeutic management as is given in this overview. With the dedication of the National Soil Tilth Laboratory in 1989, it was decided that one contribution the laboratory could make to agri cultural science would be to foster an exchange of information on soil management. The focus of that interchange centers on long-term soil management. If we are to fulfill the goals of sustainable agriculture, environmental quality, and feeding the world, there will have to be an increased understanding of how to effectively manage the soil. Long-term soil management requires integrated and interdisciplinary research to bring all of the information together in terms which would be applicable to all soils. To accomplish this goal a workshop is held each year, with the exchange of information focusing on a single topic within the framework of developing effective strategies for long-term soil management. With the forum to focus on an individual theme each year, the theme for the initial workshop was "Limitations to Plant Root Growth.
