Book excerpt: What is re-enactment and how does it relate to heritage? Re-enactments are a ubiquitous part of popular and memory culture and are of growing importance to heritage studies. As concept and practice, re-enactments encompass a wide range of forms: from the annual ‘Viking Moot’ festival in Denmark drawing thousands of participants and spectators, to the (re)staged war photography of An-My Lê, to the Titanic Memorial Cruise commemorating the centennial of the ill-fated voyage, to the symbolic retracing of the Berlin Wall across the city on 9 November 2014 to mark the 25th anniversary of its toppling. Re-enactments involve the sensuousness of bodily experience and engagement, the exhilarating yet precarious combination of imagination with ‘historical fact’, in-the-moment negotiations between and within temporalities, and the compelling drive to re-make, or re-presence, the past. As such, re-enactments present a number of challenges to traditional understandings of heritage, including taken-for-granted assumptions regarding fixity, conservation, originality, ownership and authenticity. Using a variety of international, cross-disciplinary case studies, this volume explores re-enactment as practice, problem, and/or potential, in order to widen the scope of heritage thinking and analysis toward impermanence, performance, flux, innovation and creativity. Como suele ser habitual, gran parte de las contribuciones presentadas en este volumen se centran en el estudio del aprendizaje del inglés como segunda lengua, una de las principales preocupaciones del sistema educativo español en estos momentos, tanto en la etapa preuniversitaria como universitaria. Es lógico, por tanto, que estos jóvenes investigadores muestren interés por un asunto que atañe a un elevado número de estudiantes en la sociedad actual. Los estudios van desde el análisis de libros de texto utilizados en la enseñanza del inglés, para comprobar si estos textos adoptan correctamente las cuatro destrezas básicas (listening, speaking, speaking, writing) al aprendizaje de la lengua desde el punto de vista de una aproximación comunicativa, hasta la relación de la prosodia y la utilización de audífonos por parte de personas sordas o la percepción que tienen los estudiantes de la pronunciación del inglés. Como se ve, problemas muy cercanos a la realidad pedagógica. Las contribuciones literarias se centran exclusivamente en autores del siglo XX (incluida una adaptación al Londres actual de una obra de Shakespeare), pero recorren todos los géneros literarios, así como el cine. En general, estos estudios se fijan en obras concretas y las analizan desde perspectivas culturales, sociológicas o psicológicas. Podemos encontrar autores consagrados, como Theodore Roethke y Ted Hughes o escritoras más localistas, como la canadiense Jeannette Armstrong, y sobresalen miradas postmodernistas, tanto en el ámbito de la novela como del cine. En definitiva, se trata de una selección de artículos altamente prometedora, que supone un claro desafío al futuro de los Estudios Ingleses. Por todo ello, hay que felicitar a todos los participantes y, sobre todo, a los editores de este volumen, que han demostrado una enorme capacidad de trabajo y entusiasmo.

First contextualizing the history of the popular “Bakumatsu” period (1853-1868), the moment of Japan's emergence as a modern nation, Sean O'Reilly paves the way for a reinterpretation of Japanese pre and postwar cinema. Setting a film in the Bakumatsu period offered 'cultural breathing room' to both filmmakers and viewers, offering a cinematic space where apolitical entertainment and now-forbidden themes like romance still reigned. Some filmmakers-and viewers-even conceived of these films as being a form of resistance against Japan's growing militarism. As comparisons between the popularity of such films versus that of state-sponsored propaganda films show, audiences responded enthusiastically to these glimmers of resistance. O'Reilly argues that we should turn our attention to the much more popular films of the time that were major hits with audiences in order to understand what resonated with wartime spectators, and to speculate about why this might have been the case. Including clips of these rare films, a so-far neglected area of Japanese film history is now firmly situated in context to offer a thought-provoking, multidisciplinary approach.
