Book excerpt: This guide to learning to control your life by controlling your thoughts is “filled with practical wisdom and techniques” (Harold McCoy, healer, founder and director, Ozark Research Institute). Find and Use Your Inner Power If you keep on doing what you’re doing, you’re likely to keep on getting what you’re getting. If you do nothing, nothing will happen. If you do something, something may happen. Here’s how to do “something” so you won’t keep on getting what you’re getting! Raymon Grace, mountain man, dowser, healer, and font of folk wisdom, has written a book filled with down-home stories of what happens when real people use their personal power to heal themselves and take charge of their lives. Included here are stories of spontaneous healings, space clearing, the amazing powers of the pendulum, dowsing, energy raising, exorcism, and tapping into the power of spirit guides. Grace inspires readers to imagine the seemingly impossible, to harness the power of the mind, and to open themselves to a world of endless possibilities. You don’t need academic degrees, expensive equipment, or spiritual credentials. All you need is a willingness to learn the simple principles and put the techniques to use. This book shows you how to change your life. “Use this book, don’t just read it. All you need to get started retraining your mind and your emotions is wrapped up on each page—simple, to the point—so simple, you might miss the instructions he gives via stories and quick tips.” —P. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D., author of The Big Book of Near-Death Experiences, Near-Death Experiences: The Rest of The Story, Future Memory, Children of the Fifth World

Book Gender and Citizenship

Download or read book Gender and Citizenship written by Claudia Moscovici and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moscovici proposes a new understanding of how gender relations were reformulated by both male and female writers in nineteenth-century France. She analyzes the different versions of gendered citizenship elaborated by Friedrich Hegel, George Sand, Honore de Balzac, Auguste Comte and Herculine Barbin revealing a shift from a single dialectical (or male-centered) definition of citizenship to a double dialectical (or bi-gendered) one in which each sex plays an important role in subject-citizenship and is defined as the negation of the other sex. Moscovici further argues that a double dialectical pattern of androgyny endows women with a (relational) cultural identity that secures their paradoxical roles as both representatives and outsiders to subject-citizenship in nineteenth-century French society and culture.

Book Creole Crossings

Download or read book Creole Crossings written by Carolyn Vellenga Berman and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The character of the Creole woman—the descendant of settlers or slaves brought up on the colonial frontier—is a familiar one in nineteenth-century French, British, and American literature. In Creole Crossings, Carolyn Vellenga Berman examines the use of this recurring figure in such canonical novels as Jane Eyre, Uncle Tom's Cabin, and Indiana, as well as in the antislavery discourse of the period. "Creole" in its etymological sense means "brought up domestically," and Berman shows how the campaign to reform slavery in the colonies converged with literary depictions of family life. Illuminating a literary genealogy that crosses political, familial, and linguistic lines, Creole Crossings reveals how racial, sexual, and moral boundaries continually shifted as the century's writers reflected on the realities of slavery, empire, and the home front. Berman offers compelling readings of the "domestic fiction" of Honoré de Balzac, Charlotte Brontë, Maria Edgeworth, Harriet Jacobs, George Sand, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and others, alongside travel narratives, parliamentary reports, medical texts, journalism, and encyclopedias. Focusing on a neglected social classification in both fiction and nonfiction, Creole Crossings establishes the crucial importance of the Creole character as a marker of sexual norms and national belonging.

Download or read book Indiana written by George Sand and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indiana, a young woman stuck in a loveless marriage, is seduced by a charming neighbor who is not as polished and pure as he appears. She embarks on a journey to find real love, leading to an unexpected discovery about the object of her affection. Indiana is a young woman from French Louisiana who’s married to the much older Colonel Delmare. Their union is strict and often oppressive, leaving her unfulfilled. Indiana shares their home with her cousin Ralph and her loyal maid, Noun. One evening they encounter a handsome young man, Raymon de Ramière, who becomes interested in Indiana. Yet, prior to their meeting, Raymon had already seduced Noun who is pregnant with his child. This complicated dynamic forces Indiana to decide what she really wants: passion or stability? Indiana is a bold commentary on the institution of marriage in France. It examines the implied gender roles and responsibilities pushed upon women. Sand champions the need for passion and true love, regardless of social convention. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Indiana is both modern and readable.

Book Empathy and the Strangeness of Fiction

Download or read book Empathy and the Strangeness of Fiction written by Scott Maria C. Scott and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores how and why narrative fiction engages empathy, including Theory of MindOffers a broad overview of current scientific work on the effects of fiction-reading on empathy, including Theory of MindProvides an original intervention in the field of literary theory, centring on the reflexive properties of the fictional strangerIncludes stand-alone close readings of three novels by important French authorsThis book studies recent psychological findings which suggest that reading fiction cultivates empathy, encouraging us to be critically reflective, suspicious readers as well as participatory, 'nave' readers. Scott draws on literary theory and close readings to argue that engagement with fictional stories also teaches us to resist uncritical forms of empathy and reminds us of the limitations of our ability to understand other people. The book treats figures of the stranger in Balzac's La Fille aux yeux d'or, Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir and Sand's Indiana as emblematic of the strangeness of narrative fiction, both drawing us in and keeping us at a distance.
