Book excerpt: "The Scenario on exhibit, from 2002-2004 and measuring approximately 7 by 10 feet, illustrate commonplace scenes and objects derived from Rauschenberg's vast archive of found and self-generated imagery. The paintings reveal a variety of environments including, rural America, southern, warm climate regions, and New York City. In his discussion of Rauschenberg's photo-based, large-scale panels, Hijuelos states the Scenarios 'are massive 'super' multilayered paintings that tell stories and cry out about American life; they arepanoramas that have an epic quality.' Through a dramatic assemblage of images, the paintings become documentary narratives that serve as a historical record of a distinct time and place in the modern world." --Exhibition description from pacegallery.com.

Book excerpt: "PaceWildenstein is honored to present Robert Rauschenberg's new series of Scenarios paintings and a cast bronze sculpture entitled The Ancient Incident (Kabal American Zephyr) on view from October 27 through November 25, 2006 at 32 East 57th Street, New York. A color catalogue accompanies the exhibition. The nine paintings, each measuring a little over 7' x 10', are visual collages created from Rauschenberg's vast archive of found and self-generated photographs, which then get transferred onto aluminum panels covered in polylaminate synthetic fabric. Rauschenberg has always been recognized for his innate ability to create a striking commentary on the surrounding landscape, and his Scenario paintings are undeniably Americana in nature, focusing on rural America, the South and New York City. The Ancient Incident (Kabal American Zephyr) relates to a sculptural series that Rauschenberg began in 1981 and has continued to work on until present day. The sculptures contain fragmented images juxtaposed incongruously inviting the viewer to create his or her own narrative. " -- Exhibition description from pacegallery.com.

Book Gaps and the Creation of Ideas

Download or read book Gaps and the Creation of Ideas written by Judith Seligson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-08 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gaps and the Creation of Ideas: An Artist’s Book is a portrait of the space between things, whether they be neurons, quotations, comic-book frames, or fragments in a collage. This twenty-year project is an artist’s book that juxtaposes quotations and images from hundreds of artists and writers with the author’s own thoughts. Using Adobe InDesign® for composition and layout, the author has structured the book to show analogies among disparate texts and images. There have always been gaps, but a focus on the space between things is virtually synonymous with modernity. Often characterized as a break, modernity is a story of gaps. Around 1900, many independent strands of gap thought and experience interacted and interwove more intricately. Atoms, textiles, theories, women, Jews, collage, poetry, patchwork, and music figure prominently in these strands. The gap is a ubiquitous phenomenon that crosses the boundaries of neuroscience, rabbinic thinking, modern literary criticism, art, popular culture, and the structure of matter. This book explores many subjects, but it is ultimately a work of art.

Book Robert Rauschenberg s Erased de Kooning Drawing 1953

Download or read book Robert Rauschenberg s Erased de Kooning Drawing 1953 written by Gregor Stemmrich and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 1028 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This book chronicles the creative period of the 1950s and 1960s, a high point in American art. In his collaborations with Merce Cunningham and John Cage, and as a pivotal figure linking abstract expressionism and pop art, Robert Rauschenberg was part of a revolution during which artists moved art off the walls of museums and galleries and into the center of the social scene. Rauschenberg's vitally important and productive career spans this revolution, reaching beyond it to the present day. The book features the artists and the art world surrounding Rauschenberg--from Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning to Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol, together with dealers Betty Parsons, and Leo Castelli, and the patron Peggy Guggenheim.

Book 365 Gays of the Year Plus 1 for a Leap Year

Download or read book 365 Gays of the Year Plus 1 for a Leap Year written by Lewis Laney and published by White Lion Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fun and fascinating compendium of LGBTQ+ icons, one for every day of the year, and a celebration of queer history – or as RuPaul would say; Herstory! Discover your queer hero and learn something new every day with 365 Gays of the Year, an accessible and fun introduction to LGBTQ+ history through the people that made it. Carefully curated and thoughtfully researched, author Lewis Laney assigns a person or group of note to each day of the year to form the ultimate LGBTQ+ hall of fame. Legendary queer icons such as Marsha P Johnson and Freddie Mercury sit alongside lesser known but equally important names such as activist Renée Cafiero, blood donor Barbara Vick, and Sappho the lesbian poet (who was doing her thing in 570BC). All have contributed amazing achievements to the LGBTQ+ story. Each month also features one ally - inspiring heterosexual people who have all contributed something significant to the lives of the LGBTQ+ community. People like Elizabeth Taylor who “brought AIDS out of the closet and into the ballroom – where there was money to be raised”. Each entry comprises a short biography plus a brief explanation about why that celebratory date represents an important milestone. Lewis brings international figures to life (famous and lesser-known) with his witty and uplifting prose which are peppered with little-known facts and accompanied by bright illustrative portraits from the hugely talented Charlotte MacMillan-Scott. This witty, unique celebration of queer history promises to inspire and empower readers with its wealth of bright stars.
