Book Rationalising the Bible Volume 1

Download or read book Rationalising the Bible Volume 1 written by Ivy Bedworth and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-02-28 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rationalising the Bible" is a collection of volumes that cover the books of the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible. Written by mostly unidentified authors, the Bible is generally attributed with being the moral compass of the world of Judeo-Christian religious adherents. In fact, the Bible is mostly mythological history, inaccurate science, exaggerated reports of violence and discrimination against the people who settled the Fertile Crescent, and a set of laws plagiarised from those already in existence in the area. Even the writing of it, claimed to be that of the patriarchs, can clearly be identified, in the reading of it, as belonging rather to a period when all people in the civilised world were writing their stories. It was not written, as atheists often charge, by illiterate nomadic tribespeople in pre-history. Instead, it was written by politicians and priests at a time when the western civilisations were making their mark on the world's politics.

Download or read book The Bible in Photography written by Sheona Beaumont and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheona Beaumont addresses the untold story of biblical subjects in photography. She argues that stories, characters, and symbols from the Bible are found to pervade photographic practices and ideas, across the worlds of advertising and reportage, the book and the gallery, in theoretical discourse and in the words of photographers themselves. Beaumont engages interpretative tools from biblical reception studies, art history, and visual culture criticism in order to present four terms for describing photography's latent spirituality: the index, the icon, the tableau, and the vision. Throughout her journey she includes lively discussion of selected fine art photography dealing with the Bible in surprising ways, from images by William Henry Fox Talbot in the 19th century to David Mach in the 21st. Far from telling a secular story, photography and the conditions of its representations are exposed in theological depth.; Beaumont skillfully interweaves discussion of the images and theology, arguing for the dynamic and potent voice of the Bible in photography and enriching visual culture criticism with a renewed religious understanding.

Download or read book Rational Bible Numbers written by Dennis Prager and published by Regnery Faith. This book was released on 2024-11-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you think the Bible is irrelevant, irrational, or even, at times, immoral—and you have an open mind—The Rational Bible will change your mind and influence your outlook on life. You will come to understand why the Bible and especially its first five books, the Torah, are the most influential books ever written. Equally important, you will understand how they apply to your life. The Rational Bible, Dennis Prager’s commentary and explanation of these five books—rooted in his expertise in biblical Hebrew and its grammar—is widely considered the most important modern Bible commentary. Read the thousands of reviews on Amazon—written by people of many faiths and of no faith—and you will appreciate why this is so. The Book of Numbers—“In the Wilderness” in the original Hebrew—is the fourth book of the Bible. Among the many compelling issues addressed in this volume are the following: Doubting God. What produces faith—miracles or effort? And if effort, what efforts work? Arguing with God. Ingratitude as a source of evil. Why only men could be priests. Why the conscience is not morally reliable. Is fanaticism ever justified? Is there luck in life, or is everything determined by God’s will? The title of this five-volume commentary is The Rational Bible because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. In Dennis Prager’s words, “If something I write is not rational, I have not done my job.” Few people alive today have influenced as many people as has Dennis Prager. In the words of the website, Powerline, “Dennis Prager is probably the foremost public intellectual of our time.” Read The Rational Bible and you will understand why.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rational Test: Bible Doctrine in the Light of Reason To show that certain fundamental biblical doc trines, as held by orthodox believers, are reasonable that is the chief purpose of this volume. The author's position is that reason should not be placed above the Bible; that is rationalism. Very often the proper attitude of the human mind before God's truth is, Believing where we cannot prove. It is not ir rational that it should be so, for in many of the coma monest affairs of life We must Often walk by faith, and not by sightIt is incorrect to think that faith and reason are opposed to each other. This error springs from the supposition that faith and credulity are synonymous terms. So far from this being true, it is an undisputed fact that many of the wisest and best men of the world possess the most childlike faith in Christ and His revelation. Superior knowledge makes a man con scious of the limitations of human learning, and, there fore, leads to humble trust and a childlike disposition. Whether faith is rational or not depends upon its Object. Faith in that which is true and right is a most rational act of the soul blindly to accept error is credulity, and is, therefore, irrational. Book The New Cambridge History of the Bible Volume 3 From 1450 to 1750

Download or read book The New Cambridge History of the Bible Volume 3 From 1450 to 1750 written by Euan Cameron and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume charts the Bible's progress from the end of the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment. During this period, for the first time since antiquity, the Latin Church focused on recovering and re-establishing the text of Scripture in its original languages. It considered the theological challenges of treating Scripture as another ancient text edited with the tools of philology. This crucial period also saw the creation of many definitive translations of the Bible into modern European vernaculars. Although previous translations exist, these early modern translators, often under the influence of the Protestant Reformation, distinguished themselves in their efforts to communicate the nuances of the original texts and to address contemporary doctrinal controversies. In the Renaissance's rich explosion of ideas, Scripture played a ubiquitous role, influencing culture through its presence in philosophy, literature, and the arts. This history examines the Bible's impact in Europe and its increasing prominence around the globe.

Book Toronto Blessing Charismatic Deception Volume 1

Download or read book Toronto Blessing Charismatic Deception Volume 1 written by K B Napier and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-07-20 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Toronto Blessing (TB) was planned by charismatic leaders who saw their movement dwindling in numbers. Though planned, it became obvious that Satan took it over and the effects hit the churches worldwide like a runaway truck! It only lasted about two years, but its destructive force is still with us in the now mainstream charismatic movement. Many churches that allowed the TB through its doors thought it would save their existence and save souls, but it did not. Churches hit in the face by the vile movement were ruined, deceived and far from God. Thousands of individual Christians were shattered. The various manifestations were accepted and called as 'from God' though they were so blatantly satanic and wicked. When the storm passed, many churches were shamed into pretending it never happened, but they did not repent or publicly disown the movement. This book and others in the series MUST warn churches of a similar movement if it arises (which it will). Its history MUST be told.

Book Biblical Exegesis and the Formation of Christian Culture

Download or read book Biblical Exegesis and the Formation of Christian Culture written by Frances M. Young and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-04-28 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges standard accounts of early Christian exegesis of the Bible. Professor Young sets the interpretation of the Bible in the context of the Graeco-Roman world - the dissemination of books and learning, the way texts were received and read, the function of literature in shaping not only a culture but a moral universe. For the earliest Christians, the adoption of the Jewish scriptures constituted a supersessionary claim in relation to Hellenism as well as Judaism. Yet the debt owed to the practice of exegesis in the grammatical and rhetorical schools is of overriding significance. Methods were philological and deductive, and the usual analysis according to 'literal', 'typological' and 'allegorical' is inadequate to describe questions of reference and issues of religious language. The biblical texts shaped a 'totalizing discourse' which by the fifth century was giving identity, morality and meaning to a new Christian culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current tendencies in religious studies and theology show a growing interest for the interchange between religions and the cultures of rationalization surrounding them. The studies published in this volume, based on the international conferences of both the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, aim to contribute to this field of interest by dealing with concepts and influences of rationalization in Judaism, Christianity, Islam and religion in general. In addition to taking a closer look at the immediate links in the history of tradition between those rationalizing movements and evolutions in religion, emphasis is put on intellectual-historical convergences: Therefore, the articles are led by central comparative questions, such as what factors foster/hinder rationalization?; where are criteria for rationalization drawn from?; in which institutions is rationalization taking place?; who propagates, supports and utilizes rationalization?
