Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Religion, and the Rationalistic Objections of the Bampton Lectures for 1858 Postscript defending Clarke's doctrine of theidentity of the Divine and Human Morality against the arguments of the Bampton Lec tures, by showing that the opposite doctrine would lead us to the absurdity of atheism. Mr. Mansel, after some interval, published a reply to this Postscript, in the form of a letter addressed to me, towards the end of last Term. There was not time to answer his letter before the commencement of the Long Vacation, more especially as he had appealed to books, the convenient use of which, though he seems to think the knowledge of them general among us, was not very easily obtained. But I circulated among the Academical community, of which we are both members, and to which we both owe the observance of social rules, a paper repudiating certain unmannerly accusa tions which he had, very gratuitously, as I hope and believe, put into my mouth. The sub stance of that paper is repeated in this Preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common focus of the essays in this book is the debate on the nature of science - often referred to by contemporaries as ’natural knowledge’ - in Britain during the first half of the 19th century. This was the period before major state support for science allowed its professionalization; indeed, it was a time in which the word ’scientist’ (although coined in 1833 by William Whewell) was not yet widely used. In this context, the questions about the nature of science were part of a public debate that included the following topics: scientific method and intellectual authority, the moral demeanour of the man of science, the hierarchy of specialised scientific disciplines, and the relation with natural theology. These topics were discussed both within scientific circles - in correspondence and meeting of societies - as well as in the wider public sphere constituted by quarterly journals and encyclopaedias. A study of these debates allow us to see how British science of this period began to cast loose some of its earlier theological supports, but still relied on a moral framework to affirm its distinctive method, ethos and cultural value.

Download or read book The Origins of Agnosticism written by Bernard Lightman and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987. The Origins of Agnosticism provides a reinterpretation of agnosticism and its relationship to science. Professor Lightman examines the epistemological basis of agnostics' learned ignorance, studying their core claim that "God is unknowable." To address this question, he reconstructs the theory of knowledge posited by Thomas Henry Huxley and his network of agnostics. In doing so, Lightman argues that agnosticism was constructed on an epistemological foundation laid by Christian thought. In addition to undermining the continuity in the intellectual history of religious thought, Lightman exposes the religious origins of agnosticism.
