N 0 words will put the thoughts over into the empty and passive mind, but the mind must come to the language with some previous preparation in its habits of thinking to enable it to discern and take the thought there contained. To the familiar mind the work is not open to the criticism of obscurity, either from style or terminology. The vague reproaches in the charges of transcendentalism and German Speculation need no other reply than the emphatic affirmation that whatever danger or error there may be in transcendentalism or Ger manism, these are not to be overcome by any timid ignoring or any valorous denouncing of them. They are to be put down in no other manner than by fairly meeting and fully refuting or correcting them in their own methods. The work has done more than was anticipated for it in awaking and directing thought, and it is given in this re vised form from the conviction that its use is still needed to the same ends, and especially as a text or reference book in the higher philosophical instruction of our colleges. We go to our own inward experience to find the facts, both of the single mental phenomena and of their connection with each other. An Empirical Psychology is here alone attempted, and in this we cannot proceed according to the order of a pure science. The necessary and universal ideas, which must determine all mental activity in every capacity, in order that these capacities may become intelligible to us in their conditional laws of operation, are not now first assumed, and then carried forward to a completed system by a rigid a priori analysis and speculation in pure thought. Such a work has already been accomplished in a psychology thoroughly rational. The subjective idea which must condition and expound all intelligence has been attained, and then the objective law which controls all the facts of an acting intelligence has been determined to be in exact accordance. But in this work we wait upon experience altogether. We use no fact, and no combination of facts, except as they have already been attained in the consciousness of humanity. It is rather a description of the human mind than a philosophy of it; a psycography rather than a psychology; and should not assume for itself the prerogatives of an exact science.
