We model information frictions in the rational inattention framework and obtain a closed-form expression for a migration gravity equation that we bring to the data. The model predicts that ows from countries with a higher cost of information or stronger priors are less responsive to variations in economic conditions at destination, as migrants rationally get less information before deciding where to move. The econometric analysis reveals systematic heterogeneity in the pro-cyclical behavior of migration flows across origins that is consistent with the existence of information frictions.

Book excerpt: With the increased accessibility and availability of resources to information, the United States has experienced an increae in migration from rural areas to metropolitan areas. The decision to relocate has caused individuals to place a great deal of importance on their current economic situation while weighing their future economic position. As a result, it is important to note whether there is a correlation between migration and the potential for future economic prosperity. I attempt to discover this decision based on analysis of total and net migration flows between two states. This paper utilizes a modified gravity model and a forward-looking economic proxy to examine the correlation between net migration and vqariables believed to influence migration. The results for net migration indicate that house price, future economic opportunity, the distance between two states, and the fraction of population holding a bachelor's degree are statistically significant in predicting migration. An increase in the distance (in miles), population holding a bachelor's degree, and potential future growth, lead to a decrease in net migration. This also holds true while evaluating total migration flows. In the evaluation of total migration flows, I discover that as average household income rises in the receiving state, migration into the state rises as well; when the giving state's income increases, migration flows out of the state decreases. however, as the unemployment rate for each state rises total migration between these two states decreases.

Documenting the hidden world of France’s migrant worker hostels, it explores why older North and West African men continue to live past retirement age in this sub-standard housing. Conventional wisdom holds that at retirement labour migrants ought to instead return to their families in home countries, where their French pensions would have far greater purchasing power. This paradox is the point of departure for a book which transports readers from the banlieues of Paris to the banks of the Senegal River and the villages of the Anti-Atlas. In intimate ethnographic detail, the author brings to life the experiences of these older labour migrants by sharing in the life of the hostels as a resident, by observing at close quarters the men's family life on the other side of the Mediterranean as a guest in their homes, and even by accompanying them in their travels by bus, sea, and air. The monograph evaluates several theories of migration against rich qualitative data gathered from multiple methods: biographical narrative and semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and archival research. In the process, it offers a thoughtful contribution to broader debates on what it means for migrants to belong and achieve inclusion in society.
