Book Rational Elementary Arithmetic Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rational Elementary Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by Henry Holmes Belfield and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Elementary Arithmetic He is next led to apply his facts to other concrete problems, such as: If John has one marble and Henry has three, how many have both? Which are not constructive, but which oblige him to use his judgment. Finally the number combinations thus learned and applied are fixed by a series of drills. An essential feature of these drill tables is that they make the subject less formidable to the child. For example, the tables on page 43 show that if the child adds three, say, to a series of numbers ending in six, all the sums will end in nine. As soon as the child masters the develop ment of a number, he is taught to associate it with certain facts of his daily life; as, for example, in connection with the number eight, is given the table of dry measure, and with the number twelve, the foot, the months, and the mysteries of the clock face. In this way the child is sure to be interested, and his powers both of memory and of judgment are developed. Throughout the book much use is made of graphic illustrations and concrete problems, such as drawing to scale. Book excerpt: Until recently there had been relatively little integration of programs of research on teaching, learning, curriculum, and assessment. However, in the last few years it has become increasingly apparent that a more unified program of research is needed to acquire an understanding of teaching and learning in schools that will inform curriculum development and assessment. The chapters in this volume represent a first step toward an integration of research paradigms in one clearly specified mathematical domain. Integrating a number of different research perspectives is a complex task, and ways must be found to reduce the complexity without sacrificing the integration. The research discussed in this volume is tied together because it deals with a common content strand. During the last ten years specific content domains have served as focal points for research on the development of mathematical concepts in children. The areas of addition and subtraction, algebra, rational numbers, and geometry are notable examples. Whether a similar organizational structure will prevail for programs of research that integrate the study of teaching, learning, curriculum, and assessment is an open question. The perspectives presented in this volume illustrate the potential for adopting this perspective.

Book Fundamentals of Elementary Mathematics

Download or read book Fundamentals of Elementary Mathematics written by Merlyn J. Behr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Elementary Mathematics provides an understanding of the fundamental aspects of elementary mathematics. This book presents the relevance of the mathematical concepts, which are also demonstrated in numerous exercises. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the study of logic to understand the nature of mathematics. This text then discusses mathematics as a system of structure or as a collection of substructures. Other chapters consider the four essential components in a mathematical or logical system or structure, namely, undefined terms, defined terms, postulates, and theorems. This book discusses as well several principles used in numeration systems and provides examples of some numeration systems that are in use to illustrate these principles. The final chapter deals with the classification of certain mathematical systems as groups, fields, or rings to demonstrate some abstract mathematics. This book is a valuable resource for students and teachers in elementary mathematics.
