Book Estimating the Returns to Education

Download or read book Estimating the Returns to Education written by Harry Anthony Patrinos and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typically estimates of the benefits of education investments show average private rates of return for the average individual. The average may not be useful for policy. An examination of the distribution of the returns across individuals is needed. The few studies that have examined these patterns focus on high-income countries, showing investments to be more profitable at the top of the income distribution. The implication is that investments may increase inequality. Extending the analysis to 16 East Asian and Latin American countries the authors observe mixed evidence in middle-income countries and decreasing returns in low-income countries. Such differences between countries could be due to more job mobility in industrial countries, scarcity of skills, or differential exposure to market forces.

Download or read book At a Crossroads written by María Marta Ferreyra and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean has expanded dramatically in the past 15 years, as the average gross enrollment rate has more than doubled, and many new institutions and programs have been opened. Although higher education access has become more equitable, and higher education supply has become more varied, many of the 'new' students in the system are, on average, less academically ready than are their more advantaged counterparts. Furthermore, only half of higher education students, on average, complete their degree, and labor market returns to higher education vary greatly across institutions and programs. Thus, higher education is at a crossroads today. Given the region's urgency to raise productivity in a low-growth, fiscally constrained environment, going past this crossroads requires the formation of skilled human capital fast and efficiently. 'At a Crossroads: Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean' contributes to the discussion by studying quality, variety, and equity of higher education in Latin America and the Caribbean. The book presents comprehensive evidence on the recent higher education expansion and evolution of higher education labor market returns. Using novel data and state-of-the-art methods, it studies demand and supply drivers of the recent expansion. It investigates the behavior of institutions and students and explores the unintended consequences of large-scale higher education policies. Framing the analysis are the singular characteristics of the higher education market and the market segmentation induced by the variety of students and institutions in the system. At this crossroads, a role emerges for incentives, information, accountability, and choice."

Book Schooling for Success

Download or read book Schooling for Success written by Laura Randall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The link between economic development and education in Latin America is generally well-recognized. A literate and educated work force is the largest single factor in explaining economic growth. In this study, the editors and contributors survey the various elementary educational systems to investigate the reasons behind the failure of schools to retain students in elementary grades. A group of scholars looks at the current state of education in four countries: Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, with a view to designing more effective programs for reducing the dropout and grade repetition rates. For each country studied, there is an overview of the school system, teacher training and attitudes, centralized and decentralized planning, curriculum development, and psychological and environmental issues that contribute to school dropout.

Download or read book Evolution of Earnings and Rates of Returns to Education in Mexico written by Gladys Lopez Acevedo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality in education accounts for a large share of the inequality in earnings in Mexico. But the increase in earnings inequality does not appear to reflect a worsening in the distribution of education. The cause instead appears to be skill-biased technological change facilitated by increased economic openness.

Book Estimating the Returns to Education in Argentina

Download or read book Estimating the Returns to Education in Argentina written by Paula Ines Giovagnoli and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The authors estimate returns to schooling in urban Argentina for a 10-year period. In addition to comparable earnings functions, they also estimate the returns using quantile regression analysis to detect differences in the returns across the distribution. Over time, men in higher quantiles have higher returns to schooling compared with those in the lower quantiles. For women, returns are highest at the lowest quantile. The returns to education increased during the past decade. The authors do not rule out that increased demand for skills is driving the increasing returns over the decade. "--World Bank web site.
