Book The Impact of Selling the Federal Helium Reserve

Download or read book The Impact of Selling the Federal Helium Reserve written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-06-18 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Helium Privatization Act of 1996 (P.L. 104-273) directs the Department of the Interior to begin liquidating the U.S. Federal Helium Reserve by 2005 in a manner consistent with "minimum market disruption" and at a price given by a formula specified in the act. It also mandates that the Department of the Interior "enter into appropriate arrangements with the National Academy of Sciences to study and report on whether such disposal of helium reserves will have a substantial adverse effect on U.S. scientific, technical, biomedical, or national security interests." This report is the product of that mandate. To provide context, the committee has examined the helium market and the helium industry as a whole to determine how helium users would be affected under various scenarios for selling the reserve within the act's constraints. The Federal Helium Reserve, the Bush Dome reservoir, and the Cliffside facility are mentioned throughout this report. It is important to recognize that they are distinct entities. The Federal Helium Reserve is federally owned crude helium gas that currently resides in the Bush Dome reservoir. The Cliffside facility includes the storage facility on the Bush Dome reservoir and the associated buildings pipeline.

The book then covers the more practical issues caused by induced fractures, such as how to understand where the losses are occurring and how to use proven preventative measures such as wellbore strengthening and the effect of base fluid on lost circulation performance. Supported by realistic case studies, this book separates the many myths from the known facts, equipping today's drilling and cementing engineer with a go-to solution for every day well challenges. - Understand the processes, challenges and solutions involved in lost circulation, a critical problem in drilling - Gain a balance between fundamental understanding and practical application through real-world case studies - Succeed in solving lost circulation in today's operations such as wells involving casing drilling, deepwater, and managed pressure drilling

Book Sand Control in Well Construction and Operation

Download or read book Sand Control in Well Construction and Operation written by Davorin Matanovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-21 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Produced sand causes a lot of problems. From that reasons sand production must be monitored and kept within acceptable limits. Sand control problems in wells result from improper completion techniques or changes in reservoir properties. The idea is to provide support to the formation to prevent movement under stresses resulting from fluid flow from reservoir to well bore. That means that sand control often result with reduced well production. Control of sand production is achieved by: reducing drag forces (the cheapest and most effective method), mechanical sand bridging (screens, gravel packs) and increasing of formation strength (chemical consolidation). For open hole completions or with un-cemented slotted liners/screens sand failure will occur and must be predicted. Main problem is plugging. To combat well failures due to plugging and sand breakthrough Water-Packing or Shunt-Packing are used.

Book Coring Methods and Systems

Download or read book Coring Methods and Systems written by Rahman Ashena and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a practical guide to downhole rock sampling and coring concepts, methods, systems, and procedures for practitioners and researchers. Its chapters are based upon years of extensive studies and research about the coring methods and via direct and continuous communication and consultation obtained from various service and operator companies such as Baker Hughes GE, NOV, OMV, and Sandvik. The contributors discuss the state-of-the-art coring methods and systems (mainly used in the petroleum industry), which include: · conventional coring; · wireline continuous coring; · invasion mitigation coring (low invasion, gel coring, sponge coring); · jam-detection, anti-jamming, full closure; · safe-coring and tripping; · oriented-coring; · pressure/in-situ coring; · logging-while-coring; · motor coring; · mini-coring; · coiled Tubing Coring; and · underbalanced coring. The contributors provide practical and applicable understanding of the procedures of these coring methods and systems, as well as the specific core barrel components, working mechanisms, and schematics of the tools and processes used. Because Coring Methods and Systems analyses and compares the core barrels used in both petroleum and mining industries, it enhances the communication and may allow knowledge transfer between the two industries. As core damage is a serious issue during coring and handling jeopardizing correct calibration of exploration data, Coring Methods and Systems has greatly focused on its identification and its mitigation. Therefore, it can be used as an ideal source for geologists, core analysts, and reservoir engineers, to ensure the retrieval of high-quality cores.
