Book excerpt: Remember Me? is an award-winning guidebook for owners of dogs who are losing their mental faculties as they age, and the story of a dog and owner who retained their bond through this most difficult situation. If you have an aging dog, Remember Me? will give you the information you need to weather the difficult condition and give your dog the most fulfilling life possible. In Remember Me, you will learn: • About the symptoms of canine cognitive dysfunction, medications and other interventions that are showing promise in treating the condition; • How to adapt your home and habits to keep your dog safe; • The many products available to solve the problems of senior dogs; • How to make things easier on yourself, physically and emotionally; and • The complex question of euthanasia and how to make your own decision about it. The story of author Eileen Anderson's small terrier Cricket, who developed dementia, is threaded through the book. As Cricket's dementia worsened she paced, she circled, she stood in corners, she forgot what she was doing, and at times she lost and found her owner repeatedly. For the last weeks of her life she even forgot how to drink water. As Cricket's condition deteriorated and needs changed, Anderson learned about the disease and developed methods to care for her dog. She shares these methods in Remember Me? and her calm, conversational tone is soothing to dog owners who are suffering--sometimes more than their dogs. Remember Me? won the 2016 Maxwell Award from the Dog Writers Association of America for a book on health, behavior, or general care.

Book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Rat Terriers

Download or read book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Rat Terriers written by Ross D. Clark and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book (Rat Terrier) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

Book The New Sport of Minkenry

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph Carter
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2014-07-02
  • ISBN : 9781500400668
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book The New Sport of Minkenry written by Joseph Carter and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-07-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mink are famous worldwide for their luxurious coat of fur, and yet most people know very little about them beyond their use as clothing. Even trappers, naturalists, and fur farmers, those who should know mink best, typically know only one side of the mink... their bad side. Those who do "know mink" will tell you how extremely aggressive and blood thirsty the mink is, and truth be told, they aren't that far off. But there is a different side to mink that very few have seen. This book not only tells how the art of Minkenry began, but more importantly, it is a step by step guide to those wanting to train a hunting mink. In this book I share how to tame, train, and properly care for this very intense little predator, the North American mink. Though still in its infancy, the sport of minkenry has been spreading thanks to the information sharing power of the Internet. First started in the western state of Utah, there are now minkeners springing up across the United States, and even as far away as the UK, Germany, France, and other European countries! As there is a growing need for a "how to" manual on the art of minkenry, this book was written specifically to fill that need. Minkenry is a very challenging sport, and is definitely not for everyone! Though highly intelligent, and surprisingly affectionate, mink are also very high-strung and stubborn creatures. They typically use their intelligence to work against you, far more than they do to work with you. Though not an adventure for the faint of heart; falconers, hunters, trappers, and other sportsmen worldwide, are being drawn to the art of minkenry with a pioneer's spirit. They have the desire to become part of something that has never been done before! If you yearn to experience the challenge of hunting with an aggressive, high strung, truly wild animal; then join us and become one of the pioneers in the new sport of minkenry!

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Rat Terrier Dog written by Carl Juan and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-01-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rat Terrier is a small to medium-sized dog breed with a high activity level and a natural propensity for hunting. These dogs have a reputation for being quick to learn and plenty of energy. The origin of the name "Rat Terrier" most likely lies in the breed's previous life on farms where it was employed for rodent control, in especially the pursuit of rats. The coats of Rat Terriers, which come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, are short and silky. They stand out from the crowd thanks to their pointed ears, chiseled features, and toned physique. Due to their intelligence and agility, they are frequently utilized in dog sports and contests. These canines are ideal companions for active persons or families. Although they are known for their love and affection toward their owners, they also have a reputation for being fiercely autonomous and headstrong. In order to ensure that they are well-behaved and get along well with other dogs and people, training and socialization are necessary. As pets, working dogs, and competitors in dog sports like agility, obedience, and more, Rat Terriers prove their adaptability and utility. Their specific qualities and behavior can differ from one individual to another, but they are generally renowned for their vitality, cleverness, and love of play and activity.
