Book Rare K decay Experiments

Book excerpt: There have been a proposal (accepted - E777) and a letter-of-intent to search for K .-->. .pi.mu.+e− to a branching ratio better than 10−11. This motivation is to test different types of lepton number conservation - specifically, there is a boson in technicolor models which would allow such decays at a level around 10−1°. This note discusses the E777 experiment, reasons for doing the experiment at the AGS, and the prospects for looking for even smaller branching ratios. A level of B.R. 4.8 x 10−9 (90% C.L.) for K+ .--. .pi.+.mu.+e− was achieved in a CERN experiment designed to study Ke4 decay. That experiment used a separated 8 x 104/pulse K+ beam with a PWC/spark chamber detector and no muon identification. E777 will use an unseparated beam with 2 x 107K/sup +//pulse, PWCs, and muon identification. Cherenkovs will be designed to not misidentify particles, at a reduced efficiency. For example, two counters will be filled with H2 gas at atmospheric pressure to identify electrons. This reduces delta-ray contamination, at a cost of reduced efficiency for identifying the electrons. They chose a K/sup +/ momentum of 6 Gev/c (and, thus, to do the experiment at the AGS) for good particle identification.

Book Rare Decays Experimental Summary and Prospects

Download or read book Rare Decays Experimental Summary and Prospects written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I review the status and future prospects of searches for forbidden and highly kaon suppressed decays. This workshop comes as we are poised at the threshold of a new generation of rare K decay experiments. There are new experiments running or about to run at KEK, BNL, FNAL, and CERN. In another year or so these will be joined by the KLOE experiment at DA[Phi]NE. The good news is that it's a very exciting time. The bad news, at least for a reviewer, is that there aren't too many new results. Thus I'll be giving a little more attention than usual to what the experimenters expect to do. My discussion of rare K decays covers processes that are forbidden in the Standard Model, those that highly suppressed and to a smaller extent, those that are merely discouraged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Physics at KAON", an international meeting jointly organized by the KFA Jillich and TRI UMF, was held in the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef from June 7 through June 9, 1989. This was one of a series of meetings - the first one in Europe - in which plans for the medium energy physics laboratory KAON were presented and some aspects of the physics at this new facility were discussed. The meeting focussed mainly on the topics of hadron spectroscopy, J{ -meson scattering, strangeness in nuclei, and rare decays. Also presented were some of the research programs at SATURNE and COSY which may well lead to KAON physics in the future. These proceed ings include articles which summarize our current experimental and theoretical knowledge in the various areas, as well as papers which describe lines of research feasible with KAON. The large number of participants - limited, in fact, by the capacity of the Physikzentrum - clearly demonstrates the great interest of the European physics community in the research avenues which will be opened by the high-intensity hadron facilities. Book excerpt: In recent years the study of the rare decays of kaons has had three primary motivations. The first is the search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). Virtually all attempts to redress the theoretical shortcomings of the Standard Model (SM) predict some degree of lepton flavor violation (LFV). Decays such as K{sub L} → [mu]{sup {+-}}e{sup {-+}} have very good experimental signatures and can consequently be pursued to remarkable sensitivities. These sensitivities correspond to extremely high energy scales in models where the only subpression is that of the mass of the exchanged field. There are also theories that predict new particles created in kaon decay or the violation of symmetries other than lepton flavor. The second is the potential of decays that are allowed but that are extremely suppressed in the SM. In several of these, the leading component is a G.I.M.-suppressed [1] one-loop process that is quite sensitive to fundamental SM parameters such as V{sub td}. These decays are also potentially very sensitive to BSM physics. Finally there are a number of long-distance-dominated decays which can test theoretical techniques such as chiral Lagrangians that purport to explain the low-energy behavior of QCD. Knowledge of some of these decays is also needed to extract more fundamental information from certain of the one-loop processes. This field is quite active as indicated by Table 1 that lists the decays for which results have been forthcoming in the last couple of years as well as those that are under analysis. Thus in a short review such as this, one must be quite selective. Recent results on rare kaon decays are reviewed and prospects for future experiments are discussed.

Book excerpt: Experiment E865 at the BNL AGS is a search for the lepton number violating decay K → ?+?+e− with an expected sensitivity of 3 × 10−12. The experimental apparatus involves a magnetic spectrometer with two Cerenkov counters, a calorimeter and a muon detector for particle identification. In addition, other rare K+ decays are studied. The experiment has been collecting data since 1995, and preliminary results are presented.

Book SEARCH FOR THE RARE KAON DECAY K bar nu

Download or read book SEARCH FOR THE RARE KAON DECAY K bar nu written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the search for the rare decay K →?+?{bar {nu}} in the pion momentum region 140 MeV/c ≤ P{sub {pi}+} ≤ 195 MeV/c. This is a Flavor Changing Neutral Current (FCNC) decay which is forbidden to the first order in the Standard Model (SM) by the GIM mechanism. However, this decay mode is allowed in the second order by two Z-Penguin and one box diagram and is expected to have a branching ratio of (0.72 ± 0.21) x 10−1°. This decay mode is sensitive to the coupling of top to down quark and therefore a measurement of the branching ratio for this decay mode provides a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V{sub td}. The recent observation of two events in the pion momentum region 211 MeV/c ≤ P{sup {pi}+} ≤ 229 MeV/c estimates a branching ratio of 1.57{sub -0.82}{sup +1.75} x 10−1° for the same decay mode. We have extended the search for this decay to the lower pion momentum region. Data collected by the Experiment E787 at Brookhaven National Laboratory during the 1996 and 1997 run were analyzed in this thesis.
