Direct CP violation finally appeared in the form of ε′/ε in the K system. Indirect CP violation in B → J/Ψ Ks decay, the raison d'être for construction of e+e- B factories, was first sniffed out at the proton-antiproton collider. The asymmetric B factories — BABAR at SLAC and BELLE at KEK — were completed, while the symmetric B factory at Cornell was upgraded to CLEO-III. It seems that everyone is positioning himself for the great competition on “B Physics and CP Violation”, racing to unravel the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, especially the size and origin of CP phases. The change of millennium provides a dramatic backdrop.To have intensive discussions at the technical level, to create broader interest in the subject, and to maximize interaction between experimenters and theorists, this book starts with the status of B factories: accelerator, detector and physics analysis. Following an overview of B physics and the CKM matrix, it delves into the details of lifetime, spectroscopy and decays, with even more specialized discussions on rare decays, direct and indirect CP violation, factorization and final state interactions, determination of unitarity phases, etc. Topics on ε′/ε, rare K decay, charm and hyperon systems, and various T, CP and CPT tests are also discussed at length. E799, with the primary goal of observing direct Cp Violation via searching for the rare decay K[sub L][yields] [pi][sup 0] l [sup +]l[sup [minus]] (where l = e, [mu] [nu]) took test data between November 1991 and January 1992 (Phase 1). Book excerpt: Discrete symmetries as parity P, charge conjugation C and time reversal T, as well as their combinations such as CP and CPT play a fundamental role in particle physics. The CP symmetry violation was discovered unexpectedly in 1964 during the regeneration studies of the neutral K mesons, and result in a far-reaching consequences. In the framework of the Standard Model it implies the existence of the third generation of quarks. Moreover, it is a very important mechanism which could have an essential contribution to the asymmetry between matter and antimatter in the Universe. Parameters describing CP violation in neutral kaon decays were measured with a good precision and at present the main experimental effort is focused on studies of the neutral B and D meson systems. However, there are still several interesting open issues in the kaon physics, like rare Ks meson decays. This work is focused on the measurement of the rare CP violating Ks 3 0 decay branching ratio based on the data sample gathered with the KLOE detector operating at the -factory DA NE in the Italian National Center for Nuclear Physics in Frascati.

Book excerpt: It has been pointed out that, with its high energy and luminosity, the SSC may provide the best or only way in which CP violation in heavy meson decays or the rare decay modes of such mesons can be observed. The major problem in the exploitation of the high rates of heavy quark production is the identification of interesting decays in the midst of a large background of more conventional processes. There have been some optimistic reports on the feasibility of such experiments, but relatively little quantitative backup has been provided. In the present report, we concentrate exclusively on B-meson decays. As is the case for K mesons, but not for charm or top decays, the favored modes are suppressed by the smallness of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angles, and therefore rare modes are relatively more frequent and potentially easier to observe.
