Book Common Forest Trees of North Carolina How to Know Them

Download or read book Common Forest Trees of North Carolina How to Know Them written by J. S. Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Forest Trees of North Carolina, How to Know Them: A Pocket Manual Trees are the largest and oldest of living creatures. They are in one way or another perhaps more closely associated with our own daily lives than is any other class of living things, yet most of us know less about them and can hardly even tell one kind of tree from another. It is hoped that this book will furnish in formation which will enable even the child to know our common trees at Sight, and will stimulate so great an interest in the life and habits of these forest friends that all North Carolinians may learn to appreciate, foster and protect the great heritage of our trees. In using this book it should be borne in mind that nearly two-thirds of the area of our State is still classed as forest land; that much of this has had the greater part or all of the merchantable timber cut from it; that there IS practically no more virgin forest; and that in most areas the second crop of timber is less in quantity and inferior in quality to the'origi'nal forest. Book Forest Trees of the Pacific Slope Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forest Trees of the Pacific Slope Trees Classic Reprint written by George B. Sudworth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Trees of the Pacific Slope Trees This volume is the first of four which are to deal with all the native forest trees of North America north of the Mexican boundary. It contains an account of the tree species known to inhabit the Pacific region, 150 in all. Part II will be devoted to the Rocky Mountain trees, Part III to the trees of the southern States, and Part IV to the trees of the northern States. The region covered by Part I includes Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California (see maps, frontispiece). Many trees described occur wholly within this region, but none are represented throughout it. A few are found on its southern border and range into Mexico, while three or four trees stretch from within the Pacific region to the Atlantic. The definition of a tree followed by the author includes woody plants having one well-defined stem and a more or less definitely formed crown (but not excluding unbranched cactuses, yuccas, and palms), and attaining somewhere in their natural or planted range a height of at least 8 feet and a diameter of not less than 2 inches. It has been difficult to apply this definition in all cases, for there is no sharp line between some shrub-like trees and some tree-like shrubs. However, though wholly arbitrary, it has been serviceable. A considerable number of species included are, over much of their range, little more than chaparral shrubs, becoming tree-like only in exceptionally favorable places. Recent discoveries in this region have made it necessary to class as trees several species previously regarded as shrubs. Some species are shrubs within this territory, but are trees outside of it. There still remain for further careful consideration several species of Arctostaphylos, Ceanothus, and Styrax, which may prove to be trees. Since this work was prepared solely for the layman, the use of technical terms has been avoided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees of New York State: Native and Naturalized Today we are faced with an appalling timber shortage within the state. Thousands of acres of forest lands lie idle which should be producing the forests of the morrow. TO exercise sane suffrage the public must be educated as to the natural resources of the state. We must know more of the kinds of trees which make up its forests, the game which inhabits them, the fish which live in the forest streams. Succeeding generations will criticize or commend us as we employ unwise or remedial measures. A wise forest policy presupposes two things, an extensive campaign of reforestation on idle forest lands within the state, and a close utilization of such forest resources, chie y timber, as still remain. Closer utilization Of wood requires a more specific knowledge of tree species. The information given in the following pages is an endeavor to meet this demand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Forest Trees of Georgia: How to Know Them In 1930, the handbook was reprinted by the Florida Forest Service. The only change from the original edition was the inclusion of a supplemental list of 158 less important native species not described. Florida is the most prolific state in the Union in tree flora. There are approximately 314 species growing in the state, comprising almost half of all the trees in North America, north of Mexico. The state's tree flora can be broken down into four principal divisions: sweet gum, red maple, tulip tree and slash pine in the north; a southern-division composed of longleaf pine, magnolia, and cypress; a Caribbean representa tion including royal palm, mahogany, and gumbo limbo and an endemic representation such as Florida yew, dune holly, and Florida hickory.
