Book Active Volcanoes of Chiapas Mexico El Chich n and Tacan

Download or read book Active Volcanoes of Chiapas Mexico El Chich n and Tacan written by Teresa Scolamacchia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication summarizes the studies carried out at two of the most active volcanoes of Chiapas (Mexico): El Chichón and Tacaná. El Chichón erupted explosively in 1982 killing more than 2000 people being the worst volcanic disaster in Mexico, and Tacaná produced two mild phreatic explosions in 1950 and 1986. Only after these explosions a surge of new studies began to unreveal their volcanic history and impact. This book presents the state of the art advances in topics related to the geologic setting of the two volcanoes, their eruptive history and composition of erupted products, the hydrothermal systems and their manifestations. Volcanic hazards and risks and possible mitigation plans are discussed based on the experience of the catastrophic eruption of El Chichón that occurred in 1982. The book will also include previously unpublished material on the flora and the fauna of the region and archaeological and social aspects of the area that is inhabited by indigenous people.

Download or read book Interlopers of Empire written by Andrew Arsan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the first comprehensive history of the Lebanese migrant communities of colonial French West Africa, a vast expanse that covered present-day Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Guinea, Benin and Mauritania. Where others have concentrated on the commercial activities of these migrants, casting them as archetypal middlemen, this work reconstructs not just their economic strategies, but also their social and political lives. Moreover, it examines the fraught responses of colonial Frenchmen to the unsettling presence of these interlopers of empire--responses which, with their echoes of metropolitan racism, helped to shape the ways in which Lebanese migrants represented themselves and justified their place in West Africa. This is a work which attempts not just to reshape broader understandings of diasporic life-of Janus-like existences lived in transit between distant locales, and de- pendent on the constant to-and-fro of people, news, and goods--but also to challenge the way we think about empires, and the relations between their constituent territories and diverse inhabitants.

Book Reassessing Paleolithic Subsistence

Download or read book Reassessing Paleolithic Subsistence written by Eugène Morin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-19 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contribution of Neandertals to the biological and cultural emergence of early modern humans remains highly debated in anthropology. Particularly controversial is the long-held view that Neandertals in Western Europe were replaced 30,000 to 40,000 years ago by early modern humans expanding out of Africa. This book contributes to this debate by exploring the diets and foraging patterns of both Neandertals and early modern humans. Eugène Morin examines the faunal remains from Saint-Césaire in France, which contains an exceptionally long and detailed chronological sequence, as well as genetic, anatomical and other archaeological evidence to shed new light on the problem of modern human origins.

Book The Molecular and Cellular Biology of Wound Repair

Download or read book The Molecular and Cellular Biology of Wound Repair written by R.A.F. Clark and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editing a book of this nature was a simultaneously exhilarating and frightening experience. It was exhilarating to draw from cell biologists, biochemists, and molecular biologists, as well as those dermatologists, pathologists, and pul monologists who are cell biologists at heart, to author chapters. At the same time, it was frightening to ask such busy investigators to devote their precious time to writing chapters that summarize not just their own endeavors but their entire area of expertise. However, the authors assuaged our fears by enthusi astically accepting the proposal to write on specific topics despite the time burden, and to update and willingly accept our editorial comments. In the editors' view, the authors have captured the important scientific data in their respective fields, have organized the data into an understandable outline, and have applied the information to elucidating wound repair processes. The explosion of new, important discoveries in the field of wound repair and related areas as our book was developing has been very unsettling. This observation predicts obsolescence. In response to this possibility, the authors and the editors have attempted to build fundamental concepts upon existing data. Hopefully, these concepts will help provoke further experimentation to unravel the complex, interwoven processes of wound repair. The book has been organized into three parts: Inflammation, Granulation Tissue Formation, and Extracellular Matrix Production and Remodeling.
