Book excerpt: In the early morning of May 12, 1986, the small fishing vessel "Viking Leader" departed from Ucluelet, B.C., to take part in the second black cod fishery opening of the 1986 season. That same morning whilst en route to the fishing grounds in good weather conditions, the vessel developed a starboard list and within munutes lay over on her starboard side and capsized. The crew abandoned the vessel in a liferaft and were rescued shortly afterwards by the fish dragger "Royal Canadian" which was in the immediate vicinity. The "Viking Leader" did not sink and was righted some days later and towed to Vancouver, B.C. where she underwent a refit, and subsequent stability tests.There were no seriious injuries as a rsult of this casualty nor was there any appreciable amount of pollution reported. The "Viking Leader" re-entered service on July 26, 1986 to participate in the salmon fishery. the cost of salvage and refurbishment of the vessel was in the order of $340,000.

Book excerpt: The fishing vessel "Samwise" with a crew of nine departed Ucluelet on the west coast of Vancouver Island at 2200 , August 31, 1987 bound for the fishing grounds of La Perouse Bank. By 0330, September 1, the wind had increased slightly and the sea became moderate causing waves to break on the aft deck; shortly after, the "Samwise heeled over to port and did not recover. The list rapidly increased as the crew launched the liferaft and abandoned the sinking vessel: all were later rescued in good health and brought back to Ucluelet.

Book excerpt: The "Amy Irene" was returning to Marie Joseph, Nova Scotia, after fishing on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Shortly after 1800 , June 2, 1986, the vessel settled by the stern and eventually, when in danger of sinking, the crew abandoned in a liferaft. They were subsequently rescued after having spent some six hours in the liferaft. The vessel had an insured value of $125,000. There were no injures and no pollution was detected as a result of this incident.

Book excerpt: Two lobster fishermen drowned in two separate accidents which occured in Nova Scotia on two different dates. The first accident, which took the life of Mr. Keating, occurred in Rocky Bay, Cape Breton, on July 6, 1985 and the second accident occurred two days later on July 6, 1985 in which Mr. Horne lost his life near Canso. Both fishermen were considered experience having been fishing for many years. Despite the fact that the circumstances surrounding the two accidents are different, there are, nevertheless, certain similarities in both instances. Both accidents occurred in sheltered waters, teh weather conditions were good and the seas relatively calm. None of the fishermen involved wore lifejackets. Had it not been for the prompt action of resuers in the second incident, two more persons may also have been drowned.

Book excerpt: The fishing vessel "Jean B" departed Port Hardy Government wharf at 0200 on February 19, 1986 bound for Bella Bella, B.C., with cargo of approximately 7 tons of potatoes and vegetables in sacks. The weather on departure was calm but a gale warning was forecast for the Queen Charlotte Strait later in the day. At 0418, a 'Mayday' was received by CGRS Bull Harbour from the "Jean B" indicating that the vessel was taking on water and in danger of sinking. Approximately 40 minutes later, in rough seas and strong winds, the "Jean B" sank one-half mile west of Pine Island. Of the three people on board, two were found dead by search and rescue vessels some 5 hours after the sinking and a third person is still missing. No pollution was reported following this incident.

Book excerpt: On October 17, 1985, the "Pacific Kingfisher" was fishing off Nitinat Narrows, Vancouver Island. With a catch of fish partly on board, the vessel used her boom to lift her still heavily laden net from the water. In so doing the transverse stability of the "Pacific Kingfisher" was critically reduced; the vessel rolled with the swell and, with her ability to right herself then overcome, lay over on her side, downflooded and sank. The crew of four were taken off by te skiff of another vessel and there were no injuries or pollution as a result of this incident. As a subsequent divers' report indicated extensive damage to the sunken vessel it was decided not to attempt salvage.

Book excerpt: On January 31, 1986 the fishing vessel "Vellar" with a crew of two, left Victoria, British Columbia reportedly with a destination of the fishing grounds inside Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island; she should have arrived in Barkley Sound the next day, February 1. On February 14, a concerned citizen reported her overdue to the Rescue Co-ordination centre at Victoria as the vessel only had provisions for seven days on board. An intensive search was initiated immediatelyand some debris form the vessel was found close to the rocks some five cables northwards from Cape Beale. Her crew however, was never found.

[...] En outre, au moment du départ, la hauteur du franc-bord jusqu'au sommet du plat-bord était limitée à 0,763 m. Une fois qu'on a pris en compte les divers degrés d'envahissement du puits, les simulations du BST ont montré une diminution significative de la valeur GM, en raison de l'effet de carène liquide important, de la réduction rapide de l'aire sous-tendue par la courbe GZ et de la diminution de [...] Il ne permet pas de garder le visage hors de l'eau, mais il permet de flotter et de garder la tête hors de l'eau. [...] Quoique Transports Canada encourage le port du VFI et que le projet de réforme réglementaire de la Loi de 2001 sur la marine marchande traite de la question du port du VFI sur les bateaux non pontés et sur le pont des bateaux pontés, l'avant-projet de règlement actuel8 indique qu'on ne doit porter un VFI que si l'on perçoit un risque accru de noyade et il précise que les gilets de sauvetage doiven.

Book excerpt: On the afternoon of Tuesday, December 3, 1985 the small fishing vessel "Medway Queen" was trawling at the entrance to Comox harbour on the east coast of Vancouver Island when the weather started to deteriorate from the south-east. The crew of two men began to haul in their nets and bring in the catch before the weather would worsen as a gale warning for the area had been broadcasted. As the wind was gusting to gale force and waves were increasing rapidly, the vessel fell broadside to the sea and was swamped from the stern by high waves. At approximately 1700, the vessel sank stern first. No 'Mayday' message was broadcast and whilst the owner was able to swim ashore, the deckhand lost his life in this accident. the vessel was declared a constructive total loss.
