Book excerpt: The three gasoline fuel tanks on the "Tiptoes" were filled on February 28, 1986 and the vessel was not attended over the next two days. When the operator went aboard on March 3,1986, he immediately attempted to 'turn over' the engine to check the conditions of the batteries and an explosion occurred when he turned the key in the ignition switch. The operator and two other persons aboard at the time suffered flash burns to their heads, hands and arms.There was pollution of the waters when fuel was involuntarily discharged as the vessel sank, but the gasoline was quickly dispersed by the actions of the wind and of the river. The "Tiptoes" was salvaged but was then considered to be a constructive total loss.
