Book excerpt: It is said that the Duplissey's were supposed to have been aristocrats, that were run out of France during the French Revolution. They had to leave or be killed. They went to the island of Saint Domingue (Haiti), which was owned by France. This area had large plantations with many slaves. Sometime in the l 790s, there was a slave uprising. The Duplisseys and many other whites were forced out when the slaves took over Saint Domingue (Haiti). In the old family history, passed down from generation to generation, it is said that two Duplissey brothers ( who were twins) and their mother left Saint Domingue aboard a ship. Some have said it was Jean Laffite's ship. They landed somewhere on the coast of Louisiana, and possibly in New Orleans. So far I have not verified this. I do know that they lived and conducted business in New Orleans, St. Charles Parish, and St. John the Baptist Parish.

Furthermore, it is the only account by a member of the First Louisiana Battalion Cavalry Scouts, a unit that existed for less than three months and saw its only real action during the Red River Campaign of 1864. Haynes’s memoir is a historic collection of his wartime experiences as a unionist in the Confederate South. Among his writings, Haynes describes how he opposed the secession of Texas and thus became a hunted man. He also tells of his harrowing odyssey to reach Union troops in Louisiana. Every step of the way, Haynes provides details, sometimes graphic, of the harassment and cruelty he and many others like him suffered at the hands of his Confederate neighbors.

It’s now widely understood that the fullest expression of nineteenth-century American capitalism was found in the structures of chattel slavery. It’s also understood that almost every other institution and aspect of life then was at least entangled with—and often profited from—slavery’s perpetuation. Yet as Sharon Ann Murphy shows in her powerful and unprecedented book, the centrality of enslaved labor to banking in the antebellum United States is far greater than previously thought. Banking on Slavery sheds light on precisely how the financial relationships between banks and slaveholders worked across the nineteenth-century South. Murphy argues that the rapid spread of slavery in the South during the 1820s and ’30s depended significantly upon southern banks’ willingness to financialize enslaved lives, with the use of enslaved individuals as loan collateral proving central to these financial relationships. She makes clear how southern banks were ready—and, in some cases, even eager—to alter time-honored banking practices to meet the needs of slaveholders. In the end, many of these banks sacrificed themselves in their efforts to stabilize the slave economy. Murphy also details how banks and slaveholders transformed enslaved lives from physical bodies into abstract capital assets. Her book provides an essential examination of how our nation’s financial history is more intimately intertwined with the dehumanizing institution of slavery than scholars have previously thought.
