Book Damage Assessment and Reconstruction after War or Natural Disaster

Download or read book Damage Assessment and Reconstruction after War or Natural Disaster written by Adnan Ibrahimbegovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-14 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1. SAFETY OF CIVIL STRUCTURES Society expects that the failure of civil structures is extremely rare and relies on the care and expertise of the professionals involved in the design, construction and maintenance of structures. This is in particular true for public technical systems such as transportation or energy supply systems and structures such as bridges. Structural safety may be defined as follows: “Adequate safety with respect to a hazard is ensured provided that the hazard is kept under control by appropriate measures or the risk is limited to an acceptable value. Absolute safety is not achievable.” It is thus not the structure as such that is designated safe but rather the people, goods and the environment in its surroundings. The continued use of existing structures is of great importance because the built environment is a huge economic and political asset, growing larger every year. Nowadays evaluation of the safety of existing structures is a major engineering task, and structural engineers are increasingly called upon to devise ways for extending the life of structures whilst observing tight cost constraints. Also, existing structures are expected to resist against accidental actions although they were not designed for. Engineers may apply specific methods for evaluation in order to preserve structures and to reduce a client’s expenditure. The ultimate goal is to limit construction intervention to a minimum, a goal that is clearly in agreement with the principles of sustainable development.

Book Structural Damage Assessment Through Parametric and Nonparametric Models

Download or read book Structural Damage Assessment Through Parametric and Nonparametric Models written by Marcello Morgantini and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the analysis of the statistical distribution of damage sensitive features which are extracted through parametric and nonparametric algorithms. Cepstral coefficients are features defined in the field of acoustics and, in this thesis, they have been adapted to SHM analyses in order to develop compact damage sensitive features whose extraction requires a low computational effort. In this thesis, cepstral coefficients have been mathematically transformed through a Principal Component Analysis in order to generate damage sensitive features that are barely sensitive to measurement noise, environmental conditions and different excitation sources. In an attempt to develop an automated strategy for structural damage assessment, the search for damage sensitive features has been extended to the estimation of structural mode characteristics obtained through an output-only version of the Inner Product Vector methodology, e.g. considering only the structural response time histories.

Book Forensic Engineering

Download or read book Forensic Engineering written by Stephen E. Petty and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive resource that builds a bridge between engineering disciplines and the building sciences and trades, Forensic Engineering: Damage Assessments for Residential and Commercial Structures provides an extensive look into the world of forensic engineering. With a focus on investigations associated with insurance industry claims, the book describes methodologies for performing insurance-related investigations including the causation and origin of damage to residential and commercial structures and/or unhealthy interior environments and adverse effects on the occupants of these structures. Edited by an industry expert with more than 30 years of experience, and authors with more than 100 years of experience in the field, the book takes the technical aspects of engineering and scientific principles and applies them to real-world issues in a non-technical manner. It provides readers with the experiences, investigation methodologies, and investigation protocols used in, and derived from completing thousands of forensic engineering investigations. It begins with providing a baseline methodology for completing forensic investigations and closes with advice on testifying as an expert witness. Much of what must be known in this field is not learned in school, but is based upon experience since recognizing the cause of a building system failure requires a blending of skills from the white collar and blue collar worlds. Such knowledge can be vital since failures (e.g., water entry) often result from construction activities completed out of sequence.. This book details proven methodologies based on over 7,000 field investigations, methodologies which can be followed by both professionals and laymen alike.

Book Rapid Post earthquake Structural Assessment Using Either Peak Floor Acceleration Or Displacement Monitoring

Download or read book Rapid Post earthquake Structural Assessment Using Either Peak Floor Acceleration Or Displacement Monitoring written by Wael Aloqaily and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study two approaches for rapid post-earthquake structural assessment were investigated. First, peak floor accelerations were used as an indicator for damage. Linear time-history analyses were performed using several significant earthquake records. Numerical models of undamaged four, six and eight story concrete moment resisting frames were subjected to the various earthquake records, as well as analyzing two damage states: twenty five percent damaged, and fifty percent damaged. Damage was idealized as reduction in moment of inertia of the vertical elements. The results were then compared against a number of hypotheses regarding the peak floor acceleration (PFA) profile, variance and change in peak floor acceleration due to increased damage. The PFA profile was found to be more sensitive to the ground-motion characteristics than the structural damage. The same can be said about the change in PFA with damage. The variance relationship with damage still needs more investigation. The work also includes a literature review of available damage assessment techniques using measured displacements. Finally, the applicability and limitations of each method was evaluated with digital image correlation being found to have the greatest potential to provide a low-cost structural health monitoring system for typical structures.

Book Concrete Solutions 2011

Download or read book Concrete Solutions 2011 written by Michael Grantham and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Concrete Solutions series of International Conferences on Concrete Repair began in 2003, with a conference held in St. Malo, France in association with INSA Rennes, followed by the second conference in 2006 ( with INSA again, at St. Malo, France), and the third conference in 2009 (in Padova and Venice, in association with the University of Padova). Now in 2011, the event is being held in Dresden in Germany and has brought together some 112 papers from 33 countries. Whereas electrochemical repair tended to dominate the papers in earlier years, new developments in structural strengthening with composites have been an increasingly important topic, with a quarter of the papers now focusing on this area. New techniques involving Near Surface Mounted (NSM) carbon fibre rods, strain hardening composites, and new techniques involving the well established carbon fibre and polyimide wrapping and strengthening systems are presented. Seventeen papers concentrate on case studies which are all-important in such conferences, to learn about what works (and what doesn’t work) on real structures. Thirteen papers are devoted to new developments in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Other topics include service life modelling, fire damage, surface protection methods and coatings, patch repair, general repair techniques and whole life costing. This book is essential reading for anyone engaged in the concrete repair field, from engineers, to academics and students and also to clients, who, as the end user, are ultimately responsible for funding these projects and making those difficult decisions about which system or method to use.
