Book Rapid Solidification Technology

Download or read book Rapid Solidification Technology written by T.S. Sudarshan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-12-20 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid solidification processing results in increased strength, and fracture and fatigue resistance of alloys, with concurrent improvements in mechanical, physical and chemical properties. This volume provides a systematic examination of this technology, including metallurgical aspects, processing methods, alloy design, and applications. Each chapter was prepared by a specialist for this volume. The text is well illustrated with more than 400 micrographs and schematics. More than 75 tables provide important reference data.

Book excerpt: Materials processing plays a central role in the general field of materials science and engineering; indeed, the recent surge of R & D activity in rapid solidification processing (RSP) provides a further example of how the advent of a processing method can catalyze new ideas across the wide spectrum of materials structure, properties, and performance. The major attention in RSP thusfar has been directed toward achieving fast cooling rates from the pre-alloyed liquid state, in the expectation that cost-beneficial properties in final shapes of technological importance can be obtained. Such processes typically involve: (a) the solidification of small droplets, followed by their subsequent consolidation via powder-metallurgy techniques into bulk pieces, or (b) the melt spinning of continuous or discontinuous lengths of thin ribbons, or (c) the in-situ melting and solidification of thin surface layers. Lagging behind, however, is a more basic understanding of the essential phenomena at play in RSP: mechanisms and kinetics of nucleation and growth during rapid solidification; connections between rapid solidification modes and resulting structures; characterization of RSP fine-scale structures; and definitive structure/property relationships to disclose which elements of the RSP structure are actually contributing to the novel properties being observed.

Book Rapidly Solidified Alloys

Download or read book Rapidly Solidified Alloys written by Liebermann and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-05-20 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume details the principles underlying rapid solidification processing, material structure and properties, and their applications. This practical resource presents a manifold approach to both amorphous and crystalline rapidly solidified metallic alloys.;Written by over 30 internationally acclaimed specialists in their respective fields, Rapidly Solidified Alloys: surveys nucleation and growth studies in undercooled melts; examines various processes for the production of rapidly solidified alloys; discusses the compaction of amorphous alloys; describes surface remelting treatments for the rapid solidification of surface layers and the resultant improved workpiece properties; covers the closely related topics of structural relaxation, atomic transport and other thermally induced processes; demonstrates microstructure-property relationships in rapidly quenched crystalline alloy systems and their beneficial effects in applications; and elucidates the basic, engineeering, and applications-oriented magnetic properties of amorphous alloys.;Furnishing more than 2300 literature citations for further study of specific subjects, Rapidly Solidified Alloys is intended for materials, mechanical, product, and civil engineers; metallurgists; magneticians; physicists; physical chemists; and graduate students in these disciplines.

Book Science and Technology of Rapid Solidification and Processing

Download or read book Science and Technology of Rapid Solidification and Processing written by M.A. Otooni and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a collection of papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (NATO/ARW) on "Science and Technology of Rapid Solidification and Processing", held at Hotel Thayer, West Point Military Academy, New York, N. Y. , during June 21-24, 1994. The workshop was attended by over forty scientists representing several NATO member countries as well as representatives from Japan, China (PRC), Taiwan and India. The purpose of this NATO/ARW conference was to review the major advances made in most recent years in both the theoretical and experimental areas of rapid solidification technology and processing. In accordance with the NATO/ARW format, the agenda for the conference was so arranged to offer in depth presentation of the latest developments in the subject area as well as to encourage follow-up discussions by the participants. There was seven sessions each opened with a lecture by an invited guest speaker. Sessions 1-4, covered two days of the conference and focused mainly on Processing Technologies of Rapid Solidification and Thermodynamic Properties (Practical Applications). Sessions 4-6 concentrated on Thermodynamics of Metastable Alloys, Relaxation, Diffusion, Magnetic and Electric Properties (Fundamentals). Session 6 was devoted to the Structural Characterization of Supercooled Melts, Ultra Fine Polycrystalline Materials (New Innovations and Techniques). There were two equally important aspects of this NATO/ARW conference which must be mentioned. Firstly, this is the first NATO/ARW conference on Science and Technology of Rapid Solidification and Processing held in the United States.
